The "enter me, he says in parentheses" line is also another subtle musical theater reference to stage directions. In a script, there will often be lines such as "Enter *insert character name* " when a character comes on stage, and those lines are often in italics or parentheses to denote that they are not spoken but merely directions. Here, Hamilton is speaking the "stage directions", which shows off his ego. But yeah, as another comment said, this show has so many references to musical theater in general, as well as to specific shows and hip hop songs/artists.
For real. It’s the ONLY album I’ve ever listened to on a loop on my walks and exercising etc. You can also catch so many other things that you miss the first few times around 😆 awesome
@@tomasroque3338 You assumed correct, then. Why would a kid be in a war? Why would a kid who's not a combatant be murdered by someone in the war? THAT is the better question.
My brain had to translate to first names. Aaron Burr. My brain called him Burr and I was like “who is this personal bestie of Casper and Mortius?” 😮😶🌫️
@@passerbytanuki2456I commented this before Thunder Saga, and now I'm gonna double down on it. They both only care about achieving their own goal, and everyone else is expendable.
Especially the Odysseus from The Odyssey, their hubris is the driving point in their own stories, and the driving point in their downfall. For Odysseus it’s the cyclops as we’ve already passed, and for Hamilton…. Well, Burr said it himself in song one 😭 I won’t say more because of spoilers, but we already know that much
I guess this is controversial, ody is a very witty yet patient guy. He's almost a complete opposite to hamy. Ody is a very methodical thinker who constantly makes use of things for the future and is very patient, he is literally never impulsive in the musical unless he's being influenced by an outside factor. Guys he's been in a war for a long ass time and out at sea for around 12 years or so without seeing his family and watching people around him die, people don't die cause he makes impulsive decisions that endanger his crew but instead die due to things outside his control REMINDER that the only reason cyclops didn't kill the whole crew is because he had the foresite to put lotus in the wine which btw would have also doomed his crew had he not gone to investigate and keep in mind the rash decision to reveal his name after he witness his crew and child hood best friend die... as for thunder saga HE HAD SPENT 12 YEARS AND LOST MORE THAN HALF HIS CREW TO GODS!!! Of course he would break, and even then people didn't die from his impulsive decisions (the deaths at the cave were a rational though immoral decision) but by their own by killing the cows which ody warned them not to. Hamy would have broken and saced his crew in like 2 months
@@MarcyStevonshy I think it's the second song, unless you're excluding the opening song. It's "fools who run their mouths off wind up dead." THAT is what got Alexander killed.
WARNING: This is a spoiler for a lyric at the very end of the musical, so don't look at this comment if you haven't already seen it. I really like that the "woah, woah, woah" motif doesn't get its name until the very end, where Hamilton says "Laurens leads a soldiers' chorus on the other side". Up until that point, we've heard the motif a lot, with enough context to figure out the meaning, but it doesn't get the name "soldiers' chorus" until the very end. Just a neat detail :)
You pointed out the double meaning of "shot", and that reminded me of something I find interesting that I learned. Apparently, ASL interpreters actually communicate that different meaning in their sign language when interpreting the song.
Stemming off that, ASL interpreters HAVE to be distinct in the meaning because it is a very literal language with basically no metaphors unless “borrowed” from another spoken/written language
As someone with a complex medical history, (91 surgeries, 4 nearly fatal health crises) "for the first time, I'm thinking past tomorrow" is a really impactful line that for some reason is only just now hitting me. "I imagine death so much it feels more like a memory" is another line that I really relate to. The most recent of those 4 nearly fatal health crises was back in 2017, when I was 17, and I had to be put into a medically-induced coma that lasted 10 days, and I can't remember much about what happened right before the drugs kicked in, but I do know that I looked my mom in the face and said "This time, I'm going to die." Do I regret saying that to her? YES. Do I still believe I should've died? ABSOLUTELY. I had gone septic. I 100% should've died. When they brought me back out of the coma was when things got horrible. Going septic can fuck up your brain and make it do some unpleasant stuff. I hallucinated and since it was shortly after the Las Vegas sniper, I had a delusion that a sniper was aiming at my window. Thankfully, that's the most recent of my medical PTSD. I've been generally healthy since. (DAMN, I forgot how wordy I can get when discussing my medical trauma. I'm so used to only being wordy with things I'm passionate about.)
I'm so glad that you both are continuing these videos together - my favourite duo. Who knew that when Mortius took you through the Horse and the Infant that you two would become a beloved duo to so many people
Love seeing people come blind to Hamilton at this point in time, and also non-American perspectives because I came in without an American perspective either. So I didn’t know the history at the time and it’s neat to see a similar perspective in that way. Hope you can keep it up!
It's amazing that a musical about the American Revolution is now being performed around the world, including in England. I would've loved it if Queen Elizabeth had attended a performance before her death. She was such a funny woman, I feel like she'd have asked to try on King George III's crown. I mean, she cut a cake with her knighting sword. 😂
i know! i got the chance to get tickets on their international tour here on asia (philippines) after being such a big fan for ages now. it was incredible!
In my opinion, the show doesn't say the years enough. When I was first listening to the album and I heard "The battle of Yorktown, 1781." I was like "WAIT, WHAT?! When did that much time fly by?!" 🤣
After coming from the Epic reactions, I’m really looking forward to hearing Casper’s analyses of not only the vocals and storyline, but also the instrumentals. Accompaniment is a facet of music that I don’t give as much attention as I probably should. I’m usually laser-focused on the singers, so my mind is blown when he picks apart the instrumental and points out its’ implications for the characters and story as a whole. Hope you enjoy the rest of the musical!
There's a fun bit of referencing to Duel culture in this song, "Throwing away your shot" means that, instead of using your 1 bullet against your opponent, you (typically) just aim into the sky and fire - instead of using it to off your opponent.
After you've watched the show, it would be so cool if you checked out Howard Ho's analysis of the music and its motifs! It doesnt have to be a reaction video, but if you find yourself looking to geek out about the music and/or learn something after completion, his video essays are a must!
Alexander is arrogant, but how could he not be? He was so good with words that his community on the island of Nevis in the Caribbean raised money to send him on a ship to New York City to make a better life for himself.
Being in a wheelchair is funny sometimes. You'd think it would make me think "I wish I could do that choreography." but nope. I've watched some of it and immediately thought "Oh, please, I could do that." 🤣 (I then have another part of my brain that is very much the Burr to that Hamilton-esque thought that immediately humbles me.)
I did some quick and very rudimentary revision of the songs, and depending on how you count and separate them they introduce around 10 to 15 separate lyrical motifs in these first three songs alone
@@CFEntertains I say this as someone who knows very little about music theory, they're extremely easy to spot so don't worry too much, they add so much meaning and connect every part of the story extremely well
Speaking of similarities between Hamilton and Epic. Hamilton also has their own Polities :) Lovebale charactesrs that keep the Main Character from self-distructing
i absolutely love the way you so quickly board into things and are so immediately attentive and passionate about them casper :] i hope you enjoy your hamilton journey, and im so happy we get to tag along for it
It's always great to find new people falling in love with Hamilton, especially with a good musical analysis. Thanks, guys. Speaking of animatics @Szin does incredible animatics for the first act of Hamilton. There are some great ones from other artists, especially One Last Time, but the artist for that one escapes me at the moment.. By the way the "Enter me".. lyrics refers to the blocking directions on a script will write the enter and entrance directions in parenthesis, ie (Enter Horatio).,
I really wish I were able to go and see this with the original cast when they toured, but man am I so excited to go and see it next month!! I forget how much the music slaps!
A few months late to this. But something that I didn’t see mentioned in comments is about the open high hat drumming discussed at 19:09 is also extremely symbolic. As someone who grew up visiting battle locations and watching live reenactments, that particular beat is permanently in my brain. It brings with it foreboding for the upcoming battle almost like the calm before the storm. Also the loss of youth and innocence because they were played by boys often too young to actually fight. So these boys would play the drums as a way to communicate commands to the soldiers. This puts the boys at the frontline of battle. So having that open high hat here shows Alexander’s naivety when it comes to the realities of war, even knowing what all he’s been through and seen in his life up to this point.
VoicePlay's cover of My Shot is like half the length of the original (fair), and they add more "musicality" to some of the rapped parts, singing some of the lines instead. As is typically the case, there is quite a lot of difference between the VoicePlay cover and the original 😄
The line "Only 19 but my mind is older" is an extract from "Shook Ones Part II" by Mobb Deep. I love listening to this track by this rapper, it's so relaxing; even though i don't understand the lyrics cause i'm French. Also, this line is in the first scene in the movie 8 Miles. When I watch this movie, 1 year ago, I was like WTF/ Whoah, I recognized this lyrics !!
6:04 actually they did have a kid on the war, the son of Achilles Neo was 12-13 when he enter the war and also killed many troyans and won the war ro avenge his father which was young too. Laki late 20s or early 30s
I remember Lin tweeting how pleased he was with the line that uses the French and American pronunciations of “anarchy” 😆 It’s also so nice to see someone still unashamedly love Hamilton. It’s gotten cool lately to be blasé about it, but I still love it and think it’s (sorry about this) revolutionary 😅🥰 Also, that rising tension and buildup in the drums is Alex Lacamoire’s orchestrations. He’s worked a lot with Lin, but he also helped with the orchestrations on Wicked - and that building drum line is a Stephen Schwartz thing 🥰
I love love love watching you add new perspective (your thoughts on the instrumental composition) to a show that is so dear to my heart. I look forward to following you through this!
'We're recording this in the beginning of June' And here we are, tomorrow, the thunder-Saga will be premiering, together with remastered troy- and cyclops-Saga.
I remember we went to philly on a class trip and we saw the founding fathers statues etc, but they have the one set of Aaron burr and Hamilton at the duel with guns drawn and Hamilton in his glasses and now it gives it whole new meaning because you just don’t care about history as much unless or until you feel like you know the players and what they went thru. And it’s a shame because as kids you reaaaally don’t care, but I’d give anything to be able to go back now and see all those things again. 🤧
I have no musical knowledge/education so it's fascinating to hear you discuss the different musical aspects. Half of the terms you use may as well be in a different language because I don't know music, but it's still interesting to learn.
It´s not so in front here but later on notice also the clothing of the characters. In the beginning all the main characters wear white coats (or a white dress) EXCEPT Aaron Burr and then when Hamilton is getting his brown coat on his way to New York HIS story really sets off. During the Musical they change coats depending on what they are doing and who they are and i can´t say more without spoiler i think
They're all generic people among a chorus of multitudes until their interactions with Hamilton (or Burr, in the case of Hamilton) bring their characters into full color. They only really become important to history when someone tells their story.
loving the start of this hamilton series!! I'm excited to see you keep going through these together is extremely entertaining. I've been having a tough time rn and your videos are taking my mind off this at least for a moment, it's like a vacation :)
I am so glad you are reacting to Hamilton!! I have been binge watching your channel and Mortius because i just love the way you two analyze content!! 💜
It feels so weird to hear him be called John, because there are a lot of Johns in American history, (John Adams comes to mind) so most people call him Laurens. It also feels weird to call Burr Aaron.
I feel like the one Hamilton fan that wasn't at all a musical kid. I have no musical talent, and the theater kids intimidated me, because they were the populars. 😂
Please don't apologize for likening one piece of art to another -- we all can learn a lot about the individual pieces by comparing and contrasting them, plus as viewers/listeners we all bring our own experiences with us when we're engaging with new things: it is only natural that you'd compare Hamilton to Epic (or whatever other frame of reference you choose to use!).
I think Epic kinda has to be very story-like because it's just the music, so the audience can't visually interpret what is happening, whereas this is a lot more music-focused since it has actual visual performance. Some of the stuff is harder to follow when just listening to the soundtrack, so I was elated when I learned it was going to be on Disney+.
Once this is finish if able, In the heights is the 1st Musical by Lin before Hamilton happened. So when able please react to In the Heights. Note/ Spoiler: The movie is shorthanded version of the Play but it still shows the what the main intro on what is thing going to be in.
Kinda spoilers... x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x 12:59 ...Mortius...Mortius...you think you're so funny...and yeah, you're right, that was a little sneaky funny Also, nice reference to my favorite song!
I am happy that Casper finally watching Hamilton, but...butbutbut... You should have gone with the Animal Crossing adaptation made by GuitarKnight14 :D
@@CFEntertainsOh ho ho ho Casper you have no idea the lengths musical theatre fans would go to have their definitely illegal recordings of the show not taken down by RU-vid copyright. But yea there's an animal crossing version and it's great
I taught myself all the “basic” instruments in high school (including drums) and now I beatbox a ton in an acapella context, so I know my way around percussive elements 🫶
Hiiii I was just wondering if you also react to music videos as well b/c theres one that I feel like you would be interested in, especially with the unique animation style, the lyrics, and the instrumental of the song, pretty much all of it haha Its called Maybe Man by AJR Idk if youve heard of it or not, hopefully you havent yet. Its a really good song and i hope you would react to it ^^
@@CFEntertains I'm sure you already have plenty of music/musicals to watch and react, especially since you just started Hamilton (love Act 1 more than Act 2 imo) I'm not pushing you to react it asap ofc, I'm very patient. Just wanted to give you something to add to your list is all c:
