Yep, they run natively on the hardware using gbarunner. So as long as the game doesnt require the physical cart slot there should be no difference. Using an R4 like that it's software emulation and buggy/slow.
GBArunner2 runs better when it's being loaded on a modded DSi from the console's SD card slot. Still not perfect tho. GBArunner3 is in the works. Despite being in beta, it already runs better than GBAR2, and the test results on flashcarts and modded DSis is nearly identical, too! This thing's future is really bright! Thank you Gericom for making this!
yep gbarunner3 is already much better. sometimes the sound has some slight crackling, but otherwise it usually works fine. i wish there was something like it for snes games on dsi. cant play super mario world without huge lags.
@@chiefff18 no, by all means not perfect, but if you already have a DSi, softmodding it is cheaper than buying an R4 card and gets you better GBA emulation. Honestly, if you're not using an actual GBA, there are far better ways to emulate GBA. Any modern Android device can emulate flawlessly, with Bluetooth support for link cable functionality. It's actually a very good experience. My friends and I used to have battles in Pokémon emerald on our phones in school back in the day.
@@ungratefulmangoNo one’s playing Nintendo games on their phones. Who likes touch screen dpads and buttons? Who wants to get an extra attachment like an expensive Backbone? Or an extra BT controller? Not many.
The DSi actually does have GBA hardware. They didn't remove it from the 3DS line either. They both have a specific way to access it, but it has full compatibility.
For some reason I sold a DSi XL for this very reason even though I didn't really need the money. Should say I owned all three DS, DS light, and DSi XL.
RIP Pal Park. (No not a palworld thing ironically enough. This was from Pokemon, and I’ll assume any of those unaware of it were indoctrinated into the franchise Post Gen 4)
It’s not emulation Gbarunner is a hyper visor which enables gba hardware on DSi Anyway even being a hyper visor and running natively gba games, still isn’t perfect to the matter
I use those wierd 482 in 1 and 208 in 1 ds cartridges. I love the sheer amount of great games the 208 has but the 482 was my first one. They work amazing on my 3ds and have basically no problems. At least as far as ive seen. I want to get a DSi XL again and carry that around instead of my 3ds, hoping it will last longer.
but also the ds and ds lite can run gba flash carts and in some cases you would have an advantage if you use flash carts like the omega ez flash definitive edition where it has extra features
The better console to do this on is the 3DS, which can properly run digital GBA games natively as the 3DS software is officially configured for it. This exists because of the GBA games given exclusively to 3DS Ambassadors.
Yup my Sonic Advance 3 rom has werid audio, but Kirby and the Amazing Mirror runs almost perfect. Sonic Advance + Sonic Battle keeps crashing tho... Oh and they don't look THAT far away from DS sprite-based games in terms of graphics!
I always love it when someone puts something misleading as the title. I was hoping for a day card that Gameboy games could plug into not a fucking r4 cart.
It is like the Wii though, the DS still had that gameboy advance processor inside it. The DSi has both an ARM7 and ARM9 chip, with the ARM7 chip being the same as the gameboy advance. Apparently it was used for things like sound processing and wifi
Get an ez flash omega. They even have a slim profile case for the ds lite, so the cartridge doesn't stick out. It runs every game I've thrown at it perfectly.
GBAruner2 is a terrible emulator, so the fact that it’s an emulator just says it can’t at all. Though the DSi does use practically the same components as a DS Lite. So it could theoretically play GBA games.
It's literally exactly like the Wii family edition. The DSi has the internal hardware needed to run GBA games, it's just missing the slot. Mod the firmware, and you can run GBA games directly off the SD card, and with better compatibility and performance than by doing it off an R4 card.
@ShimmeringVapidCoal All systems in the DS/3DS family have modified GBA hardware on their motherboards. Because of this, a game recognized by the firmware as being a GBA game is run using that modified GBA hardware, meaning that it is running on a GBA. This is similar to how the GBA ran Game Boy and Game Boy Color games or how the PS2 ran PS1 games. By running those through an R4 card, it's being run as a DS game, meaning that it's using software emulation, and the DS isn't strong enough to properly emulate the GBA.
One issue I’ve had with emulating gba on dsi is that the speakers will sometimes make a popping sound. Not sure if it’s just a hardware issue or not though
The only way to obtain a DS is by reaching inside a chair and there is a 0.1% chance to get a grain of salt. If you get the salt, you grab the salt and you consume it. When you need to take a shit, there is a 0.095% chance of having a DS spawning inside your shit.
The audio desync - setup the device properly or order from less shady counterfeit websites 😂 If I hadn't been dealing with them for decades I might have believed this video and formed a wrong impression, please be careful with what you are literally teaching people
I have an Android phone and a mount that allows me to essentially turn it into a retro handheld by mounting it to my Switch Pro Controller. This is unneeded.
You will have problems if you run GBArunner 2 on a r4, as it will run in ds mode, DSi mode is WAYYYYYY better for gba, so run it with twilightmenu with a dsi launcher hack you will have a great time :)
Honestly in 2024 looking at it the original 3ds has a better menu and can play ds and 3ds games and has a slightly better but still sucky camera I also have a ds lite and I love it
That's silly... The dsi absolutely does not play gameboy advanced games. With that mentality the Xbox can play gameboy advanced games too as long as you use outside programing
That isn't true. The DSi does have the capability to play GBA games in it's hardware, unfortunately, it can be difficult from a software side. You should ideally have ran it through twilight menu for better performance. On the 3DS you can run agbfirm which plays GBA games natively and perfectly
Or you can hack the dsi and run gba backups with better sound quality and better emulation js the r4 was clunky tech in fact mine had problems running Pokémon black 2 ntsc as a backup
Does it work the same way as the official Nintendo GameBoy Advance™︎ Virtual Console™︎ for Nintendo 3DS™︎? Maybe there is some kinda hidden way to run them natively? I believe that the Nintendo 3DS™︎ has something called OPEN_AGB_FIRM.
