Teacher's Pet is a weird instance of not lasting too long as a show on Disney but somehow also getting a full on theatrical movie to conclude the series. With a lot of major talent just from the art perspective of the show, let's take a look at Teacher's Pet! What is was, what happened to it and much more!

When you mentioned that Gary also made the art for Cranium I had an “I KNEW IT” moment. His art really has an interesting way of sticking out! As for Teacher’s Pet, I remember watching it but don’t remember anything from it besides the concept. Another show to revisit in the future, for sure!

The thing I remember most about Teacher's Pet is just how sharp and witty the writing was, especially for an early-2000 Disney cartoon. Despite the silly concept, it had a certain air of sophistication about it that most cartoons at the time lacked. And it was super funny at the same time. Probably the biggest turnoff for me were the character designs. They're honestly just so bizarre and unpleasant to look at, but now that I know the artist behind them had a history in fine art, I can see the designs from a fresh new perspective. I get it now.

That's it! That's where I know it from!! That, and I remember, VERY briefly, some kind of short/trailer from the series that played before a movie I watched in the cinemas when I was really young. I have no clue what movie it was, but I remember the trailer felt really... Odd... Somehow. Maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly, but I think it was set in some kind of swamp/forest?? It was dark, and a bit unsettling. And that's really all I remember from it. I thought the board game was the original somehow. Edit: watched a few more seconds of the video and now I remember that the dog turned into a real person/the kid turned into a dog.

One of my favorite unique Disney cartoons growing up when it aired on Disney's One Saturday Morning and Toon Disney, also I agree aside from the voice cast and the music, the designs done by Gary Baseman were another unique aspect to the show and it's 2004 film and why whenever I see the Cranium character designs I immediately recognize them as the one's seen in Teacher's Pet. Hope you get to do a video on The Buzz on Maggie, Randy Cunningham and Penn Zero whenever you get the chance.

Teacher's Pet was my absolute FAVORITE Disney show when I was growing up!!!! I was in preschool when it aired, so a fantastical story of an intelligent dog going to school sparked a love of learning. My mom took me to the theaters twice to see the movie and even had a coworker tape it (when it played on Disney Channel) so I could continue to watch it. I loved learning as a kid, and Scott Leadready II was a huge motivator. The music, the art, the real emotion. They don't make kids shows like this anymore!

I think this show would've profited from a more 'Ed, Edd, n Eddy' approach. As a Frasier fan, I love how subtly sophisticated Kelsey Grammer can get and he makes great shows (Girlfriends, Half&Half) but cartoons at this time thrived off of being a little odd, a little weird. The art of this show gives you that impression and then clashes a bit with the more tame approach.

I remember seeing the trailer for the movie on some DVDs back when I was a kid. I really wanted to see it, but never got it. I finally got to see the movie only about a year ago with Disney +. I found the songs enjoyable, if a little odd considering this was Teacher's Pet, which had no songs. But they seemed somewhat self-aware. My biggest problem was that the plot really gets going near the end of the second act, I guess. And how the movie ends was really weird. The third act has the rising action, the climax, a weird revival-from-death scene, and then it ends. No falling action, just credits which showed the family coming back from the trip.

Hmm. I agree with most of what you said, but go back and watch the show, there were a toooooon of songs. They just weren't stereotypical disney songs. A lot of them had kind of educational slants to them. Off the top of my head, the Photosynthesis and Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally songs.

Teacher's Pet was a fun show to watch on TV but it's sort of a pain to binge. I love Nathan Lane, but Scott's pretentious monologues get old after a while. Plus, I don't think this is the sole reason it bombed, but I feel like the movie would've sold more tickets if they advertised that it was the finale. I remember being a kid when it came out, I skipped it. Then when it came out on DVD, we rented it, and when it ended I remembered thinking, "... Wait... Did that movie just end the show?!"

I like the art style and the humor as well as the characters. I remember the episode where a park was either going to be a dog park or a skate park and Scott/ Spot was torn being which one, he wanted because of his identities in the end, theres a compromise and the park becomes both. while the show is not near the top od Disney cartoon it still is good I also have heard of the movie, but I am unsure if I have seen it or not, I may have probably seen parts of it but I’m pretty sure I haven’t seen the whole thing

I'd just like to see more people talk about it because I think this series deserves more love than it got. Really does amaze me though that it got a theatrical movie like Recess, Hey Arnold, and Rugrats did.... all much bigger titles and I'm not sure any of them were considered a success? I'd really like to ask Disney why. But I'm happy it happened because I love the movie.

Like that episode where that new girl moved to town and started picking on Leonard and Scott calling them "Teacher's Son" and "Teacher's Pet", or the episode where Scott had to decide what kind of park should be built for the town. A skatepark for the kids or a dogpark for his fellow dogs. That was the episode where I first heard the term "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". I kind of feel bad for the makers of Stewy the Dog Boy. They were really set to make a full Nickelodeon series, but then they had to get it scrapped to avoid any unfavorable comparison to Teacher's Pet. The pilot episode alone of the Kablam short also kind of implies that the cartoon would've done a few things differently from Teacher's Pet. Things like how none of Stewy's owners knew about his double life, but Leonard discovered Spot's secert identity from just the pilot episode. There was also no dog-hating principal or an owner being a teacher of the same school in Stewy the Dog Boy. I wonder what that alternative universe would've look like had we got both cartoons about a dog who disgused himself as a student airing in the early 2000s around the same time.

I had no idea the movie was the finale, I always thought the movie came first! I've seen the movie but only a couple episodes of the actual show
