The reason you're having such a hard time nailing down Emilia's feelings for Subaru is because she doesn't know what to feel right now either. She doesn't remember her past, she was raised by a murderous frost spirit (Puck) and hated by literally everyone else up until Roswall came and picked her up, and now she has Subaru constantly buzzing around her claiming shes the most important person in his life, she has no fucking clue what's going on right now

It's definitely been said before. But ReZero has a really wonderful way of wrapping its revealed secrets with even more secrets. The truth, so to speak, has several layers. The anime contains all the answers to every question, you just have to recognize them and find the connections. Also remember a lot from past episodes. There is no one in the anime who gives you the answer on a silver platter. What makes this arc a really good mystery story. Only said because a lot of important information are already provided here in this episode, directly or indirectly, on many upcoming questions.

That is for the most part how Subarus parents would act, around subaru at least, as they were made from his memories. The point is that Subaru got stuff off his chest and felt closure for his past, accepting and overcoming it, passing the trial

Yeah, as said they are based on his memories so they are pretty accurate. What Echidna was getting at is Subaru doesn't really have a way to know if his parents would actually be fully accepting and supportive of him because it's something he never actually knew himself. It's just Subaru's wishful thinking projected on to a simulation of them. That said, as Subaru says- don't underestimate his parents. It may not be reality, but Subaru chose to believe in his image of his parents. And that matters just as much.

@@tcaz they are also not exclusively based on his memories, Echidna was screwing with him a bit. It was created based on his memories, sure, but Tome of Knowledge, Echidna's Authority of Greed, filled up the blanks. That's why we (spoilers for future episodes, not for LN though, if you watched both seasons of anime you're fine) witnessed fight between Geuse and Regulus, even though child Emilia was no longer there. It wasn't mentioned in the anime, but that was the explaination of it from LN

Roswaal's plan is crazy and risky, but overall necessary. Emilia's reputation, to put it mildly, is not the best. Therefore, unless she does something crazy to raise her reputation among the population, it will be impossible for her to become queen. No one would be impressed if Roswaal had to deal with all the problems for her.

with some of the comments in this episode, the difference between the anime and novel become kinda clear. Things that are extremely well explained in the novels get only a line of dialogue in the anime, so if you aren't on your best game you'll miss it despite the anime's best effort at adaptation. 4:20 No not at all that's how his real parents would act despite not at all being ok with him "wasting his life away" 8:10 She can't do the second trial if she doesn't pass the first trial. In this case, the conclusion you are meant to come to is not that Emilia is weak but rather that whatever she faced in the past is far more traumatic than what Subaru had to face 11:50 No not really that similar to what happened to Rem. As seen with Ram later in the episode all memory of Rem ever existing has been erased, half-bloods leaving the barrier will "merely" result in death. 16:20 Eh Ram's not that bad she just enjoys barbed conversations a bit too much 26:30 As explained last episode they were prevented from leaving because they were being held hostage by Garfiel and the other half-bloods in Sanctuary 31:10 Huh Luke is instantly expecting death due to the ambiance of the scene alone

This is where the real challenge this season starts. Things will only ramp up, enjoy falling into despair yet again with our boy :) There’s not really good or bad in Re:Zero there’s lots of morally grey characters you already kinda saw it with Rem or the royal candidates everyone is just following their own agenda and sometimes the goals align and sometimes they don’t or you’re seen as an obstacle so it’s more like a spectrum rather than just black or white 1:37 Isn’t it curious that she saw Subarus past and recreated the trial based on his memory yet doesn’t even seem to question what kind of world he is from even tho it’s obviously completely different from the Re:Zero world. Also that’s our rizzlord for you! 4:31 It’s not really his imagination but his memory so they did act like his actual parents. The author confirmed that if Subaru would’ve remained in his original world his dad would’ve helped him getting over his fear of going to school and he would’ve been able to get a normal job 31:15 The magic stones have different color depending on the time of the day that’s the clocks in the Re:Zero world 32:35 I was also actually glad she’s back she’s a great antagonist I thought it’d take longer for her to make her return

It would be good to remember the name of the “old hag”: Ryuzu Bilma. And when you mention “sins,” as you suspecting Roswaal in being one, remember that there are distinctions: there are Witches that represent the sins (such as Echidna being the Witch of Greed and Satella being the Witch of Envy), Sin Archbishops (such as Regulus Corneas being the Sin Archbishop of Greed and Betelgeuse being the Sin Archbishop of Sloth), and mabeasts created by the Witches (such as the White Whale).

As the goat @SmthPositive_ already mentioned, Subaru's parents in the trial were accurate to the real deal. The imaginary part was simply the events themselves that played out in the trial itself but everything they said and everything they did, they would have done the same back on Earth if Subaru opened up to them like he did in the trial, hence why it does work as closure for him in a one sided way while his real parents may never learn the fate of their son....still praying the ending will have some way to let his parents on Earth know that he's alive and well but alas Tappei can be a cruel author. 🥲

It is interesting to see the consequences of gluttony authority. and how history changes... Well, for Ram, his most important people were Rem and Roswall... but because Rem disappeared from everyone's memory, for Ram only Roswall exists and his devotion to him is total now it doesn't matter what Roswall says .. the same happens with Subaru and Rem's achievements, which now become Subaru's alone and his fame increased without him wanting it..

Ngl i hope at the very end of Re Zero Subaru somehow gets or is given the ability to return to his old world at will, and back to the Re Zero world, just so he can see his parents for real, cause the fact that the author said his parents are still looking for him every day and are both depressed, is the most genuinely upsetting thing, it feels awful knowing that, it would be SO nice for them to finally find him and to even see the people from the Re Zero world and talk about what he did

I kinda feel like from a meta perspective it has to happen. There would no greater conclusion to Subaru's character then him being able to contact his actual parents and show them how much of a great person he became and that he's alive and alright. He doesn't necessarily need to be able to world travel but having one last conversation with them at the end of the story is a must.

They would know he's well and capable of taking care of himself, sure they'll never meet again but they can be proud of what became of him and know he's in safe hands. As for others believing them I don't think they'd care. All they ever wanted was for Subaru to become his own person and that's the most likely conclusion of the story.

This is the only thing i disliked about re zero when i first watched it years ago, and the family trial episide made it even worse, i would be ok of he didnt had any good relation or any family at all but its quite the opposite, i hope he could bring them in the re zero world or vice versa at the end of the animanga, Because his Dad's and Mom's relation with Emilia will be very important to Emilia as well since she never had actual parents, man i really wish they get to live together🥺

The trail is so much harder for Emilia because she doesn't remember her past. Subaru basically just saw something that was an almost normal every day for him, but for Emilia everything she sees in the trail is completly new to her.

I understand what you mean about Emilia, but I think this is where we get to see her as a character grow because of how "fragile" you see her as and if she can pass these trials we can hope for her to gain strength in both her spirit powers as well as her emotional characteristics. And Subaru as a character is good guy supporting and encouraging her not to give up on it. I know you are waiting for that next Return By Death and I'm sure we will get it and in a terrifying and gruesome moment I am sure even more so than what we see at the end here. But not sure you and I will be prepared for it, Luke! Still very much enjoying your reactions & loving this series as it just keeps getting better!

About what Echidona told him about his parents; we can't really be sure, not even Subaru or Echidona, best we can do is pick one and push on like him... how far will that naivety get us I wonder I love how the 2nd season challanges Subaru on who he is supposed to be, someone who trusts in his loved ones to pick up the slack or a "selfish" bastard who can only trust and rely on himself to solve everyone's problems, even at the cost of his own heart and humanity. Edit: I've seen people saying the author confirmed his parents were depicted how they really were but sadly that is a lie, he never said such thing, he said they are still looking for him and depressed, obviously they loved him but other than that nothing else has been confirmed. I can get why we'd want to believe it, but this is still Re:zero

This entire season is all about mystery and surprises. So, avoid as many spoilers as possible. Some things can be explained, but knowing the comment section, there will always be someone saying things that are considered spoilers even if the person commenting it wanted to explain stuff happenings as a goodwill. Just try to avoid spoilers as much as possible.

One really interesting fact that most people actually overlook or never mention about the start of the episode. Echidna is the trial master and oversees the whole trial of those people. So she witnessed ALL of Subarus trial. in his old world. She saw modern houses, cars, subarus phone, etc. etc. And not once in the episode did she even mention it or looked surprised. You would guess if you lived all of your life in a fantasy style world and then you watch over someones past and you suddenly see modern day earth I would imagine you would be REALLY surprised and have questions about that. That is even more true for Echidna. She is the Witch of Greed and she herself says she thirsts for knowledge. You would imagine that someone like this would bomb subaru with a lot of questions after seeing this.

In the light novel. I think Subaru's dad makes a pheonix wright reference but it was cut from the anime. So I guess they added this in place of it.

I can tell you were concerned when she said there is 3 trials in total cause you dont want them all to be full or multiple episodes that diverge from the main story dont worry about the trials, the rest are all done very well i dont think youll have any issues with any of them from here

If don't know who is this guy but someone has to say it: HE BETTER QUIT REACTING RE:ZERO, he doesn't understand anything because he thinks this story is straight forward, and Re:Zero is the most and unique study of characters in any anime, in fact Tappei didn't create an Isekai but a deconstruction of the genre. Just to check him as "reactor" (people that don't want to work and make money just watching third party content, which is very sad). I was confused : HOW PEOPLE CAN'T BEAR, SUPPORT, AND GIVE MONEY TO SOMEONE THAT NO MATTER THE CONTENT HE WATCHED ONLY SAYS: "THIS AMAZING !!!", "THIS INSANE !!", "THAT WAS INCREDIBLE !!!" "I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT"... and the most pathetic: " I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY !"... that's his job? watch whatever and say the same sentences in a loop? BUT THIS IS NOT HER FAULT BUT YOU PEOPLE THAT ARE SUPPORTING THIS JOBLESS GUY. G.O.T: PLEASE QUIT ONE OF THE BEST ANIMES ALL TIMES

Emilia likes Subaru, she always has, but it's difficult to talk about their relationship at this point in the story as this will be developed more during the season, but if you notice she always tries to stay close to him to talk and tries to have physical contact (holding hands or simply trying to touch him in some way). Anyway, there were many scenes of her and Satella with Subaru that were cut from the first season (I'm sad because Satella is my favorite in the story, even Satella x Subaru is my favorite couple), an interesting fact to add is that emilia is very jealous of subaru with any girl who approaches him wanting affection with ulterior motives, she was like that with rem before rem went into a coma and this is clear in the novel's side stories (which are canonical and important to the universe of Re :Zero and for the development of the characters, so much so that scenes from the side stories are mentioned in the main story).

Just a small reminder: Just before the puppy event in season 1, Roswaal left the mansion only on the timeline Subaru succeeded. As if this wasn't sus enough, he said to Subaru: "I'm counting on you, Subaru. Please take good care of Emilia." At that time, Roswaal had absolutely no reason to trust Subaru if you think about it.

@@user-htydaniel Let the viewer use their brain and put 2 and 2 together. There are also many vague things, things that are revealed many seasons later, and things which are simply misleading. You guys basically force this conclusion about Roswall and you make it obvious it's coming. Can't you simply talk about how you felt about this reaction or this episode. No but you have to be a smartass and show off your so called "expertise" just because you watched this show ahead of him. Luke will eventually reach that point and you are basically ruining that moment.
