The quota for the same train, is different for stations. The maximum quota is given between source and destination. In-between stations are given pooled quota. So the PQWL will get confirmed from Madurai when a confirmed ticket gets cancelled from Trichy /Madurai, provided the pool quota is same for Madurai and Trichy. You can also get into GNWL by using boarding at later station option, but you pay full fare even for boarding at later station.

Another method, if you are going from Virudhachalam to Egmore and it is appearing as PQWL means you can book from Madurai to Egmore . So that your ticket will be allocated as GNWL. But you need to change the boarding station as Virudhachalam or else TTR will cancel your ticket and give it to any others. Here you may have to pay for additional ticket fare of 30rs to 80 rs from Madurai to Egmore while compared to Virudhachalam to Egmore.

Absolutely perfect logic behind this video. But this didn't happen in my case, I had gotten from GNWL 60 one month before to GNWL 5 just 2 days prior to my journey to Trivandrum from Chennai and ended with RAC for the entire journey and my friend who got his ticket just one week prior from Coimbatore to Trivandrum got PQWL 12 on the same train and got a confirmed berth. And when I checked the chart prepared, my friend berth had some one traveling from Chennai to Coimbatore and since he got down at Coimbatore, my friend got his berth. My question is what a stupid system this is when they could've given me that berth who paid more for the journey, traveling almost 17 hours from Chennai starting around 3pm to getting down around 8am at Trivandrum the next day. Whilst my friend who got into the train around midnight, who is traveling for only 8 hours got a comfortable berth, whilst I had to share my RAC seat with some random person for the entire 17 hours while both of us were unable to sleep even one minute the whole night. It wouldn't hurt to provide one more line in the ticket saying S4 RAC# from MAS to CBE and S8 24 from CBE to TVM. Since the entire train is connected there would be no issue while moving from one to another compartment. Before you ask me that not all people can understand such complicated seating, like old people, people with mild disability, people who cannot comprehend the language, then the railway should provide another tick box option for alternative seating while travelling, like along with the tick box for auto upgradation. I've seen people travelling in RAC for 30 hours, whilst they provide a berth for people who travel in between stations for example from Bangalore to Mysore.
