What I love about this song is that it acknowledges that they aren't in love, but they do matter to each other and that's what they want and need at the moment, which is truly beautiful
I never looked at it this way but it's honestly beautiful. I like having a middle aged musical. I'm only in my 20s and I relate to this show so much, I can only imagine how I'll feel in a decade or two.
I love this song because it's one of the few musical songs that is about love but isn't inherently romantic. It's so nice having a song I can listen to as an aroace person and think 'this is platonic'
the beauty of this musical is how simply stated everything is worded... but it drives deep to core. that damn Sara Bareilles always makes me cry. And Jessie Mueller sings with so much emotion and heart. GAH!!
Love how simple the message in this song is. Everyone just needs someone to matter to them, to believe in their dreams. Maybe Jenna and Dr. P were truly in love, maybe they weren't, but they supported and appreciated each other which they both needed at the time
I tear up every time I hear this song... it's so sweet and hits close to home, and it just has this nostalgic feeling to it... and the message of just having someone there to selflessly hold you and comfort you and care about you is such a beautiful thing that I desperately want as well... it's just so good, and safe, and gentle and nice...
I once had a very good bad idea to spend some time with someone I shouldn't have and it turned into exactly this song for a long while. I've never seen what I felt with him accurately or adequately portrayed in any story- ever. This song matters to me.
Ugh this song is too beautiful. It really describes how they both want to comfort each other and how they just want someone to love them and just listen to their problems. I want something like that. No, it's not. Even though I'm mostly happy with my single life, I still wish for the same thing as well. I've seen relationships that went downhill because the couples didn't have these qualities you wanted in a relationship. I think wishing to have someone for the things you asked for is the best of how I heard from anyone telling me why they want to be in a relationship.
@@silverbrandimations6091 I agree with your statement. And to the original poster, I think that's the point of song, here you have two people who where never supposed to be together, yet they where. It doesn't matter what you've gone through (in Jenna's case is a lot) there IS that ONE person out there who you matter to more then anything in the world and sees you for who you are, not your circumstance. It may take time, but having someone care about you, isn't much to ask for and it is possible whatever the situation or past.
Çinna Cåstle aawww poor dear. I feel your pain. A few months ago my ex assumed that we broke up even though we never really discussed anything and now we don't talk as much as we used to. What sucks even more is that he hangs out with my friend more than me and they've only known each other for less than half a year meanwhile Ive known him FOR LIKE 7-8 YEARS!! Not to mention that I think my friend is starting to develop feelings for him and I'm too confused on what I want and if I'm really in love with him. I guess the real pain is that the memories I created with him that were so special to me have become a whole entire memory including him. Love is one of the worst words we have. It is a poor and confusing descriptor for a wide variety of concepts and emotions. Depending who you ask, there are 6, 7 or even 8 different words the Greeks had that represent different types of love. I love society. I love my country. I love my family. I love my Creator. I love my brothers in my fraternity. What is particularly painful is when we express love for someone to find out that it is unrequited. Sometimes this is obvious and immediate, but sometimes someone may say they love us back but not mean the same thing we say. I hear that it is important to frequently and boldly to tell people you love them. Life is short. We should make others feel better and spread love where we can. But it may be even better to say "you matter to me". Four magic words instead of three. You hear people say they think they were in love, but they weren't or they quickly fell out of love. Someone can sincerely value what a person means to them under select circumstances. You can love how a person makes you feel when you are getting something from that person, but is that truly selfless? Is that the same thing as consideration? "You matter to me" is a more selfless concept that as a person, not as what you provide, you matter to a person. In times like these, we all need to hear that more than ever. If you're on my friends list, that is because we have some connection on some level at least. And to that, I want you to know you matter to me. I hope you hear this from others who say this with great sincerity, conviction and consideration. I hope we also learn to say this to others more often with no mercenary motivation. Make someone's day. Let them know that they matter to you.

Well, the two songs have two completely different contexts. In Wicked they have *finally* found each other, after wanting to be together for so long, without telling each other. Here, they're telling each other that they are important, but they have already "consumed" their love. Hope it makes sense.
This isn't the easiest song to sing. Esp the male part in my opinion. Phrasing and emotions count so much here. I don't hear alot of melody in the accomoyment either so they have to really nail it. I'm definitely not a singer but since I can't sing I really appreciate their skills with this song. Others might disagree but that's just my pov
I’m so glad I found this song because the Highschool I play at/for and that I’m going to after middle school did a performance on this yesterday with band, color guards, more it was so beautiful and made me look up to the people who played my instrument.

This week, my best friend told me he met someone. We always had a joke that when we turned 30, if we didn't meet the right person, we'd get married. We're 27 now, and he made it. We still love each other, but in a platonic way rather than a romantic one. I'm asexual. And he's probably going to be the only person I've ever managed to love. Who knows, maybe in another life we'll have a chance. Now, I only wish the best for him. He matters to me.
