Waiyaki fought for us all. He was fighting for Kenya. This what our children should learn in school and not Vasco da Gama. Much respect for Waiyaki wa hinga!
Am proud to hear that the Waiyaki people recognise my great great great great great grandfather Gathecha who welcomed waiyaki’s father to Gatundu rest well guka Gathesha still you are great
This is the real and tangible history of Waiyaki. The rest especially in the school syllabus is lies.We need brave leaders to reintroduce our history in the school system as it is.

The Waiyaki story is one inconsistent chapter in Kenya's history. Let's examine two basic questions: (1) Did Waiyaki really ask his people to protect the land? While his descendants argue that he told them not to give out their land, it would be interesting to find out why his first-born Munyua was at the forefront in allocating the European Scottish missionaries land, first at Kihumo, then Baraniki and then sold them 44 acres at Thogoto barely six years after Waiyaki's death at Kibwezi. (2) Did Waiyaki get into a genuine relationship/covenant with Lord Lugard? It should be noted that Agikuyu have no covenants that are sealed with human blood (slaughter of goat, yes); so where did Waiyaki get this form of agreement from? Lugard himself passed through Dagoretti station on his way from Uganda on 7 August 1892, a few days before Waiyaki was arrested, but was not keen to meet with his "blood brother". Why? The explanation given was that Waiyaki had turned out to be a trickster (conman). From Waiyaki's perseective, could he have suspected that Purkiss and Co. had misrepresented him to Lugard and hence the planned violent attack (read assassination attempt) on Purkiss or was it indeed true that he had also reneged on their agreement when he burnt down Dagoretti station instead of seeking an amicable solution. There is need to re-examine this incident as well as Waiyaki's persona in order to come up with an objective version (bearing in mind that Hinga himself was still alive and perhaps advised his son who may have ignored his counsel).
Our education system should consider educating our children about our struggle for independence without censoring anything that would be of importance, and by doing so, our children will grow up being more patriotic.
