This episode of Waka Huia explores the trading of the tattooed, severed and mummified heads of our ancestors, widely known as Mokomōkai, during the Musket Wars in the 1800s.
The British of that time were obsessed with collecting these heads, which in-turn lead to their displacement in International Museums all over the world, with many of them still there today.
Haami Piripi guides us on how this continues to impact Ngāi Māori, the importance of their repatriation home, and what the best care for them may entail.
