Our dear friends, you have been experiencing wake turbulence in DCS for a few months now, but as in real life, you haven't yet seen it. Now using particle visualization, we can show you the turbulence in action for the first time.
This demo was created using an internal build of DCS World, and the visualization is for internal debugging only.

Wow that's really nice! Aerospace engineer here. I'm curious on how do you then apply this vorticity to the flight model of the aircraft being washed by the wake vortex (i.e. the one behind). I assumed that flight models in DCS were based on aerodynamic coefficients, so the wind speed should be pretty much a single value for the whole aircraft (Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you do CFD in real time). Do you make the upstream wind speed vary depending on the aircraft's position within the wind field ? Or do you have a vorticity coefficient based on the relative position of the vortex?
@Kelvin3531
@Kelvin3531 5 лет назад
No, ED PFM uses true multipoint atmosphere sampling for any airframe or rotor element. So, the effect will be naturally different as in RL depending on the aircraft position within the field.

It’s particularly useful in refueling. I recently flew in the USAFs B-2 sim and asked to do refueling. Part of the briefing was how to use the wingtip vortices from the KC-135 to push the B-2 back towards center if you drifted to one of the sides. The B-2 is terribly unresponsive to control inputs, so every little bit helped. I still sucked at it - lots of PIO caused by my own ineptness combined with the slow response, but I did manage to get on the boom twice, something I have never been able to do in DCS.

Great work! Landing a helicopter on/near a smoke source, or over dusty ground produces a unique ring-shaped vortex or "doughnut" in the air where the smoke is. In more severe circumstances, like holding positive pitch during a fast descent, of course we get vortex ring induced uncontrolled descent, so that's already modeled. But the real question is, are the vortices modeled on rotorcraft as well and as SkyCaptainITA mentioned, do they affect particle-based entities such as smoke? If you fly a fixed-wing or helicopter behind and below another helicopter, you definitely feel the wake from it. The other fun thing about wake turbulence, not only can you feel it, you can *hear* it in real-life. (not sure about DCS) Stand under an approach path in a quiet place with things nearby that stick up above the ground. Wait for an aircraft to come over on finals. The bigger the better. It should be about 75-100 feet over you at this place. Listen carefully after the aircraft passes by and it gets quiet again. You'll hear the wake turbulence as it descends and encounters terrestrial objects. Sometimes you'll even hear it hissing as it descends.
@ArkonPT
@ArkonPT 5 лет назад
Wow, never noticed that! Will keep an ear out next time I experience a low pass. Modelling with helicopters must be really really difficult. If they did it, damn, real props!
@sleat
@sleat 5 лет назад
@@ArkonPT I guess I wasn't very clear. The things I describe occur in real-life. Some of those things occur in DCS, but I'm not sure about the smoke/dust behavior or detectable wake-turbulence from rotorcraft. It would be very cool if it was implemented, and since the visual manifestations would only occur where the player was looking, not globally, it would probably not break the bank on a reasonably strong machine. VRS (Settling with Power) is definitely a "feature" of the UH-1, but I haven't tested it with other helicopters. I also have not tested wake-turbulence effect behind larger rotorcraft like the MI-8 and UH-1. If they do it at all, it should be fairly fierce in smaller wing-span aircraft (also flying slowly) if the helicopter in front of you is heavily loaded.

I've gotten the impression lately (from internet comments) that wake turbulence is synonymous with wingtip vortices. Wingtip vortices are part of what makes up wake turbulence, but what about prop wash, jet wash, and the air disturbed in the creation of induced drag and parasite drag. All of these are part of what makes up “wake turbulence”. I’ve done a little flying in DCS recently (and don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan and appreciate all that is being done by ED to enhance our experience) and I must say that I can recognize the simulation of the wingtip vortices, but I don’t seem to notice jet wash or any other disturbance. I have hesitated to post this because I don’t want to be mistaken for one of those people that you just can’t please, I’m not, and thank you for all your efforts, but there does, at least, seem to be some confusion here as to what wake turbulence is.

Servers should be able to enforce it though? Unfair advantage of single clients can disable it.

Right now, in some situations, it's a performance killer, so it should stay as an option, at least for now.

Vortex Couple Superposition otherwise know as Horse Face! This is awesome work!! I’ve already had to relearn AA-refuel with wake turbulence, adds a great element to the game. Also that wing dip when just about to shoot a bandit with guns..whoa! Lol.

Fantastic stuff. I’ve been playing flight sims since the mid 1980’s when I was a teenager. Back then I always wondered what flight sims would be like 20 to 30 years from then. Now that we’re there I’m absolutely blown away by the advances and possibilities. The gap between reality and the virtual world is closing fast. Keep up the good work.

Nitpick: You got air passing into the ground, not demonstrating ground effect.

Question, it seems the particles warp through the ground wouldn't this have a significant impact on the model if the ground doesn't act as a "blocker" here? or is it modeled but not showing up here?

All the dislikes are FC3 pilots worried they may have to fly 😂

Ya man its too bad FC3 planes are the only aggressor's you have besides maybe the Mirage and the Cat, I fly FC3 online a lot of the time, I think they are far more difficult to fly PVP than the hifi jets! I have the F18,F14 and mirage and a few others but fly almost always FC3! IF they ever make the Flankers and J11's and 29 HiFi. Then you'll hear the Blufor jocks howl!

Ok. SU-27 is the most detailed Aircraft in FC3 Pack. May not be possible to press all the Buttons inside Cockpit - sadly - but it has a very nice Flight- and Damage Model. Even some Damage on Wings causes them to break earlier on G-Effects. ...and then there is the F15: No Engine Stall, Damage doesn't affect Flight Behaviour much, G-Effects? Nah! ...you can fly through Poles, Wires, etc. Reminds pretty much on War Thunder.

Does this use a dedicated CPU core for it? How about helicopters and their ground effect, effect to obstacles like trees and buildings, and effect to smoke?

Quite impressive, and the best part of this is that there is no impact on FPS (I'm assuming this because that is always the case with these effects in DCS), Love it!

That’s why airliners need categories “heavy” and “super” in the callsigns - to prevent this effect by distance.

My wing got torn off when I crossed the bandit's wake turbulence in a turn fight at a high G. Mind blown.
