I think the main reason the female pulled the cub is because the male is big and might just roll over. After all imagine what what will happen if he just swang because he was startled. Is someone woke me up like that he would get slapped the least. And why would you assume he is abusive? Abuse is a human thing(and dolphin) and this is his offspring He had to fight for the right to breed(if he was in the wild) and he would give his life to protect the baby and his troops.
