Waking up embarrassed from anesthesia 😳

your mindset before surgery, whether major or minor surgery, may affect how you wake up from anesthesia. there is a lot we don't understand about emergence delirium, and why we wake up emotional, screaming, crying, or saying ridiculous things. however, it is very important to have a healthy, healing mindset before something as major as surgery. who knows, it might well help patients wake up more calmly after surgery. Fighting the anesthesia, is not a healthy, or relaxed way to go under!

@@thevikingwarrioridk about the person above but I’ve had 11 surgeries my longest being a 4.5hr back surgery. They all felt the same. I knew I was going to sleep, then bam I’m being woke up by the nurse telling me to take a deep breath. Then as soon as you can hold down liquids and graham crackers and can pretty much hold your own they will 1. Let you go home with a responsible party 2. Move you to a room in you have to stay. I have ptsd after my back surgery I hd at 24yrs old. I woke up in my room in excruciating pain. Nurse said I had my meds and it shouldn’t hurt so bad. I couldn’t do anything bc I was shaking from the pain so she got me an ice pack and had me lay on my side. I laid there crying in pain. Almost passed out from the pain and the dumb as assistant nurse picked my ice pack up and it was wedged between a pillow and my incision, I shoot up screaming in pain. I asked for a manager/doctor bc I needed help asap. I thought I was going to die. I kept fighting with the nurse telling her my iv wasn’t working and she just kept telling me to calm down and wouldn’t listen when I said all my meds were pinched off bc she caught the iv in the lockbox. So it took me 4.5hrs of the worst pain of my life for a doc to see me. He requested the keys and opened the box and sent all the meds at once plus a dose of anxiety meds. I had a fever of 104.3, I made everyone leave but my mom and turned the ac on and stripped all the blankets and gown off and put a tank top on. And finally fell asleep for an hour till she came in to take my blood pressure on the same arm as my iv and blew the iv out of my arm and blood went everywhere. Didn’t know at the time but the reason I was in so much pain is bc the surgeon messed me up. By my 6wk check up he had went back to his home country. I’m 43 now and can barely function. Never get back surgery unless you absolutely have too

I feel like a princess taking a nap in my cloud castle. My anesthesiologist always rubs my hand until i doze off and she will brush my hair out of my face since im not supposed to move while they do the bone marrow biopsy. The anesthesiologist, the one doing the biopsy and the one learning how to do biopsies are all the sweetest ladies and we all have conversations while i doze off and they compliment me on how well i did and everything, its great. @mrarchaicworld
@mrarchaicworld 5 месяцев назад
Best news is that you were actually awake the entire time. Anesthesia paralyzes you and causes amnesia. You’re actually awake the whole time, feeling everything, probably having a mental breakdown. Even better, a small percentage of the time, the amnesia doesn’t happen and you remember.
@Mika-gc1rd
@Mika-gc1rd 4 месяца назад
This is not true. It’s true that you get a muscle relaxant, that’s not the same as the anesthesia itself. During the surgery you are closely monitored. If your parameters are indicating pain, the CRNA will give you more medication.
@Iflie
@Iflie 4 месяца назад
@@mrarchaicworld Why would you even think that? I had a lot of surgeries and anesthesias (including several medically induced comas) but the worst one was definitely my gastroscopy “anesthesia” and my transjugular liver biopsy. I told them multiple times that anesthesias take longer to have an effect on me. They gave me two or three additional injections of anesthesia, but I just didn’t fall asleep. However, I couldn’t move and started to cry.. the doctor didn’t care if I was asleep or not and just shoved the camera down my throat. The nurses even told him to stop because I wasn’t sleeping yet. Then he threw away my piercings and asked me the dumbest questions ever after the procedure - “ohhh are you already awake? Did you sleep at all? So you felt everything?”. He knew the answers to all of those questions. The doctors refused to give me anesthesia when I had my transjugular (through the vein in my neck) liver biopsy. They told me that I couldn't have anesthesia because I have to breathe in a specific way during the biopsy / biopsies. I only found out after my transplants that other patients were allowed to have anesthesia and that it was actually “normal” to have an anesthesia during the procedure. After that, I refused to have a transjugular liver biopsy without anesthesia ever again. The doctor had to try about eight times to hit my jugular vein because the needle / catheter always slipped out. He took more than 8 biopsies. I have a very high pain tolerance but at some points the biopsy really hurt.. the moment the catheter passed my heart, my whole chest burned like hell, my heart rate was over 200, I couldn’t breathe and felt like I'm about to pass out. They just didn’t care. I wasn’t allowed to move or talk..

Once, I was scheduled to get my wisdom teeth taken out. I went to the appointment, they drugged me up, and I fought them so hard they had to stop. I just remember waking up and everyone looked really pissed off and then they shoved me into my moms car and had me leave. A few months later, had a new doctor do the surgery. Well, turns out the ortho surgeon that was supposed to take my wisdom teeth out, was arrested shortly afterwards for sexually assaulting people while they were under. So, wasnt the worst thing for me to fight it in that particular scenario. True story. Edit: The doctors name is Michael Lee Hasson, an oral surgeon in North Carolina. He was arraigned in May 2023. His trial starts this month. 30 counts, 23 known victims. You can fact check it or you can fuck off. I prefer the latter.

Had surgery 4/22, and the surgeon did a good job, but took off after I came to and never saw him again. The anesthesiologist on the other hand came by the next day and visited w/me & made sure I was okay. That made me feel much better, not so alone. Really nice guy. I came to during a colonoscopy in 2017, screaming my head off. Remember everything that happened, everything I said & what the very kind nurse said. I remember it all except the pain. Then the doc yelled for more drugs and I went back under. Scared my mom tho, because I have a very high pain threshold and have never screamed in my life (& I have broken a lot, dislocated a lot, cut my hand & leg badly, etc). As far away as she was, I must have screamed very loudly for her to hear me and recognize my voice.

I was just yelling the "F" word over and over; the nurse kept saying "Please don't say that! Stop it!" ... I prayed before going under and when I finally came to I felt God was right next to me on my right side. I had so much peace and love in my heart like I understood how much he loves and cares for us. Then he had to leave me (not that he ever leaves, but that he wouldn't be sitting with me like he was) and I cried because I was sad, but also comforted knowing Jesus was returning and we would be together very soon. I was only eleven years old, so I didn’t quite comprehend the extent of the surgery, but I got to choose between them putting laughing gas on me before they gave me the shot that would render me kaput for the surgery. I chose the laughing gas and my last few milliseconds before I went out smelled really bad (the team said it was supposed to smell like strawberries, and it did before the last few deep breaths). Before I went out though, I told them to disregard me if I say or do anything dumb. 😂

Anyways, it’s all right if you’re scared. I might have to get my scoliosis fixed a second time, and as an adult who is learning about all the components of a successful surgery and the team of DRs and Nurses behind that, and I’m feeling much more vulnerable about the whole situation than my eleven year old self ever did. 😅 ❤

Two months ago when i went under, i remember everything. When they injected the solution, liquid fire flowed through my veins, the pain was on a different level. Time had slowed, i tried asking the nurse if this was supposed to hurt like this, and if i should still be awake. But they didn't answer me. Nothing would come out of my mouth I was too tired to speak too tired to move but the pain wouldn't let me sleep. I was just paralyzed there on the table. After what felt like 6 hours, i heard the dr tell the nurse that he was done and to wake me up, and to go let my wife know i was all finished. My body still hurts every time i think about it.

Recently I had a brain surgery. I was totally awake while they rolled my bed to the operation room. But the last thing I remember was the closed doors from the outside. I didn't even make it into the operation room this time. 😂 When I woke up later, I had a flashback that really upset the nurses. One was about to call the cops when my anaesthesiologist came and told them that I was the one with PTSD and they need not call the cops. 🙈 I can't remember anything. They later told me I had been hiding under the hospital bed as soon as I had woken up.

I am a RN who specialized in neuro and brain surgeries are done both ways just like any other part of your body. If they pre mapped your brain then terrific. TV shows don’t show what really happens. And if one has a milder anesthesia than you best bet those anesthesiologists know what they are doing and how deep they can be to obey motor commands then when done they let them return to a deeper stage until done. Some universities allow ones interested in the medical field to watch. PTSD responses are absolutely real!! Post Covid has left even more people quite a bit twitchy and rightly so.

I was so nervous before my minor surgery that I had like one hour of sleep beforehand. 😂 Then I was worried about not having enough sleep, because I think I read somewhere that you wanna be well-rested. 😅 When I started to feel the anesthesia; I legit thought, “Oh, it’s you, Sleep! My old friend… 🥰 =immediately knocks out=“ I woke up feeling like I had had the best sleep ever, and was in the best mood ever, even though the surgery was done in, like, 30 mins. In conclusion, let your last thoughts be of sleeping peacefully and you just might sleep peacefully. 😂 (It was just getting a lipoma lobbed out of my side. It a non-cancerous ball of fat, basically. It had been there since I was 17, but it had started to get bigger over the years and was putting pressure in my muscle, hence me wanting to get it lobbed out.)

According to my mom after the extraction I kept waking up begging her to make sure they let me keep my teeth before passing out again. Apparently I did that over and over and over until she finally just stopped verbally answering because I was just going to jolt awake a minute later and ask where my teeth were for the twentieth time. Didn't know I was still gonna be stubborn while half-conscious lol

I totally understand how having surgery puts us in a place of complete vulnerability. I think everyone ignores this like it's the elephant in the room. I think the first thing anyone should say is we understand how difficult it is to experience this kind of vulnerablity and this is how we are going to help reduce your vulnerability during this surgery when we check in for surgery or even during the pre-op visit with our surgeon. Almost everyone's fears expressed in these comments are really about vulnerability, which we are hard wired to avoid. It is the elephant in the room at every surgery and ignoring it creates tension. Acknowledging it can burst that tension. Giving patients education on things they can do to self regulate through feelings of vulnerability and steps they can ask for that will actually reduce vulnerable situations. There are surgical undergarments for instance that may really ease some people's anxiety. Keeping your own freshly laundered undergarments on for as long as possible and maybe even until after your are asleep may be possible. Especially if you say they can just cut them off and discard when necessary. I think I woke up from my hysterectomy with special absorbing disposable underwear to catch post op bleeding. Why not ask to have those put on you before you wake up? Come prepared with questions for your anesthesiologist on how they will be prepared to not kill too accidentally. They come and give took the chance to ask questions. I don't say much other than are you prepared for a red head and can I please have that shot that relaxes me right now? Just a little bit? Advocate for yourself. You deserve this. You deserve to feel as much trust for your doctors as possible. Also, here's a truth to consider. Even if they don't give a shit about you as a person. Their egos and pocjets are fed by successful surgeries with successful outcomes. It is in their best interest to give took the absolute best care possible.
