this was my first match at Cardiff Arms Park, 14 years of age - at the time I was disappointed with the result, but now, looking back, I can see what a fantastic team that Wallaby XV was
The commentator said that it was too late for Wales, I remember that game, it was always too late for Wales. That touring side was a different class, best team ever to come to these shores in my lifetime, I wish we had rugby like that now. 👍
I reckon he's very underrated in rugby history. I remember this tour well (I went to the game against Grand Slam Champions Scotland)...and Mark Ella was utterly sensational!
My dad was an Australian living in England at the time and went to see this match, played Aussie rules all his life, his first taste of rugby came when he stayed in London from 1980-1984, he said it was a blast, During this era the players use to go the pub after the games and mix it with the fans. He met Andrew Slack, Mark Ella, Nick Farr-Jones. Apparently. Ella and Slack were both lovely, down to earth bloke willing to have a drink with you but Farr-Jones was a bit up himself though
Compare the recent 2024 Wallabies vs Wales tests with this 1984 edition. Who wouldn’t want the real running and passing speed and skills of past Rugby back with us today? A glaring example of a world sport that has gone backwards in terms of spectacle in the professional era.
Maybe this game was the start of the decline in Welsh rugby as a feared force in world rugby. The Wallabies won comfortably 28-9 and even scored a push over try through a scrum on the Welsh goal line which was unthinkable considering their forward reputation. More pain was to come to Wales with three straight hidings by the ABs in 1987-88
