I never bought RB4, but in the previous ones it was a good idea to go through the disc songs in order of difficulty rating. Try to get through everything available to you. Songs that don't seem appealing to your taste often have something to offer. But I also started before RB3 and played the non-Pro version for a couple years. It took literally less than a single evening to fully adjust to Pro. The way they made the game work on four pads by making them context-sensitive was true genius.
I felt like I learned a lot from playing All Star by Smash Mouth. It's got some fun patterns and I got a lot better at bass pedaling from it. In Bloom by Nirvana, How Do You Like Me Now?! by Toby Keith, More than A Feeling by Boston. Mostly, find some music you just enjoy in general and try to play along to that.
