January 8, 2023 China lifted all of its restrictions which meant that life is returning to normal! To celebrate, we got outside and went on a self-guided audio walking tour through the French Concessions of Shanghai.
The French Concessions is an area in Shanghai were you can find old European mansions and unique architecture. Our audio tour shared a lot of facts about the history and the buildings you can see while walking around.
If you would like to go on the walking tour, you will need to scan the QR code at 12:37 in the video to get to it, as there is no direct mini-program in WeChat to find it.
We hope you enjoy walking through the French Concessions with us and subscribe to see more of our adventures!

We are James and Keli, previously Two Tickets Around the World. We are originally from Kansas in the United States and after many years of traveling during our holidays together, we took a leap of faith and moved to China. While we teach English during the week, we use our holidays and weekends to explore the different wonders of China.
Once the borders open, we'll continue our adventures exploring the rest of the world. Until then, let's explore China together.

Doubt people know. It's like the golden gate bridge, prettiest and most famous bridge in the world, but on average there is one jumper every 2 weeks. Quite dark but most ppl go there for pics without knowing.

the building may have a dark history, but what can we really do about it as people living in 2023? Look at all the places in England that are now innocent tourists attractions, but in the past were the scene of war and horrific violence (eg London Tower, Hampton court, the various castles across the country).

It's funny how you are so concerned about the "dark" history of one building. The whole concession area is dark history for the Chinese people. Hence the name concession. That includes that road you are so proud of.

In the tour, we learned a lot about the crime, deaths, and things that happened in the concession area. We recommend people to go on the tour while in Shanghai. There’s a lot of sad history that we have learned while traveling through China in places like Shanghai, Nanjing, Harbin, Lvshun for example. We have made videos of these and shared the history about it. We would encourage everyone to watch them.

Hateful Chinese, It's funny how you care about just a single foreign concession, Yet China has committed multiple Genocides in the last 150 years, Like Mao's Cultural revolution which killed Tens of Millions of Chinese Lmao.

Nice tour! What a lot of expats call the French Concession should be referred to as the former French Concession, just let you be aware if you still use this terminology in front of a local Chinese you will be met with resentment as it happens from time to time. You have to understand the history the foreigners are no longer the colonial masters but guests as equals. (however some expats might not think so or still have the colonial mindset.) Speak of history, it has been tremendous changes that the subjugated people turned the former colony into a modern prosperous country within the last hundred years. There have been revolutions, and yes, excesses had been committed. But overall, looking back, no country has done the same. The Lady, Song Ching Ling, was one of the revolutionaries, she was the wife of the founding father of modern China, Dr. Sun, sister-in-law of Chiang who lost the civil war and fled to Taiwan, and also served as the honorary president of the People's Republic.

Thanks for the clarification! We hear both terminology used (French Concessions and former French Concessions) so it’s good to hear a perspective of why it is preferred to say former French Concessions.

I am an overseas Chinese, and I am used to using the name Concession, British Concession, and Japanese Concession, and I often omit the term "former". In fact, now that China is strong, we can calmly face Shanghai's colonial history, and we should no longer be too sensitive to this historical term. Isn't this foreign concession finally coming back? The term Concession has been preserved, but the Chinese people will never forget its history of humiliation.

Does it really matter that much? It's still the French Concession in how it looks and feels, Are you gonna be that Salty about someone refering to it as what it is and just because it reminds you of Colonialism lol, Look at the way you just talk about Europeans, No wonder why China gets a lot of hate lately Smh.

@erfanyu902 Tbf though China lost heavily to many foreign power, Can't just keep calling it a "Century of Humiliation" like it's not on you in some way for the failure of not holding up to foreign powers.

Very interesting, very interesting indeed. By the way, the diving board, looks familiar like I've seen a building looking almost the same as it also on a road junction in britain I think.

It is probably inspired by a building in Europe as the French Concessions was home to people from all around the world.

We have some problem inside the major city such as like Shanghai which is only the Rich young person {maybe some bad guys} can marry , but the poor can not marry , this is not fairness , and this was impossible during the MAO age 1949 - 1976 , What can I say , Long live Chairman Mao again ! Because everyone can marry if back to the MAO age , and this is the fairness and Respectable

Found the sad Communist CCP fan. "Mao's policies were responsible for vast numbers of deaths, with estimates ranging from 40 to 80 million victims due to starvation, persecution, prison labour, and mass executions, and his government was described as totalitarian."
