Welcomed by kind, professional ticket office workers, the voyage began. A round-trip to a peaceful, adventurous island costs 130 RMB. With an hour and a half before departure, excitement grows for the adventure.
The Chinese Navy and petrol and chemical storage make the dock a lively industrial hub. Despite the 30 RMB parking cost, the spirit of adventure encourages us to enjoy every aspect of the ride, from the intoxicating mix of sea and diesel to the strict safety procedures.
Though intended as a luxury vacation, the island now speaks of neglect and untapped promise. We discover an unspoiled beach that contrasts with Zhuhai's hectic metropolitan life. Hope Island, one of Zhuhai's 140 islands, is a peaceful, natural paradise.

Rojo, have watched some of your RU-vids, just watched Walkabout Hope Island (Hebao Dao), Zhuhai, China 荷包岛珠海. I am from the US have lived in Zhuhai now for ten years. Have traveled China for around 15 years. I like your views on China, I think the same way. I will most likely have the last chapter of my life right here in China. That's how much I prefer to live in here than the US. We live on Lovers Road and view Macao and the new bridge everyday. What else can you ask for in life. Kansas Farm Boy

Nice. Americans should stick together. I'm wanting to do an "art" hotel on lover's road for a while and do a walkabout of Fenghuanshan (maybe after the summer when the prices go down a bit) Cheers!

@@WalkaboutRojo, Just got your reply, we just got back from the farm in Nanning, it is on brother in-laws all organic farm, about 100 acres. Not including the landing strip, all the wife's had a great time flying in the two seater planes. Then visited wife's parents in real, I mean real China, tiny village in the middle of no-where. I live in Foshan, and I'm trying to choose the best possible option for, say, a 2 day trip. It's either gonna be Huizhou or one of these islands off of Zhuhai coast. The 'no swimming' rule is kind of a downer, but still - it's an awesome beach. Good footage, man. Do you remember the name of that hotel, by any chance? I wanna look it up, check out the prices.

I think Huizhou would be a better choice than this island... its really dead there in the summer. there are other islands you may want to check out that have a better tourist infrastructure. Beautiful, wide, sandy beach tugged away in a cove, framed by blue skies and azure waters. As you've alluded to, this Hebao Dao in Zhuhai is not an easy destination to access, for a 1 or 2-day stay. At one time, the island might have held promise for some developers or investors, judging from the abandoned "turnstiles" . Your drone footage added much context to your narrative, thank you! The deserted beach may be attributable to the time of the year? Too warm to visit? Thank you for sharing.

Yes, it was way too hot and not enough shade. I think the marketing for this island is a little too optimistic cause it's nothing like that when you get there. But, still a great day trip.

Never heard of this Hebao Dao island before. Very interesting day trip. The long deserted stretch of sandy beach looks amazing. On the map Hong Kong & Macau are more strategic. No wonder after winning the Opium War the Brits grabbed Hong Kong & Portugal took Macau. There must be plenty of places along the coast of Guangdong with unusual geological formations, being quite close to the ring of fire earth plates.

Beautiful island, thanks for showing us all stuck at home. I wonder if the waiters thought you were from the States and were thinking you had "you had know what" or maybe it was just "Chinese service" like in many Asian restaurants, impossible to flag down a waiter/order. ;)

Those big birds are probably Black Kites. They're fairly common in the Pearl River Delta and out on the islands. You can see them in Zhongshan near the border with Zhuhai as well as around the Zhuhai Opera House on Ye Li Dao. And what is with the 'no swimming' thing here. You're not supposed to swim unless there's a thousand other people in the water with you and at least two lifeguards to blow their whistles constantly for no apparent reason.

ah, cool. I didn't know that. I haven't seen any big birds around Zhongshan. I don't understand the rules either.
