Yes, I keep waiting for the Walker Bay people to update their design to have some roof-rack capabilities built in... they could even sell their own roof racks. Despite what they claim - these boats are just PVC and will deteriorate over time, if left in the sun... you gotta keep these out of the sun when you're not using them.... hanging in the garage is a perfect spot.
I just got a walker bay 8! did you take it on the highway cartopped? If so, how did the 2x2 rack perform with all the wind resistance? Thanks! Love you're ingenuity!
The rack did great on the van, brought out the boat on it several times. One trip was down to the Keys on I-95. Never had a problem with the boat or the rack... but the van died this spring and we got a car to replace it.... no way to get the rack on a car, at the moment.
How did you make it? How do you put it on your car and strap it down? I have a Walker Bay 10" and no roof rack (except the rails that run up and down). I'm trying to figure out how to make a rack that will go across the rails.
It took two people to lift it, turn it upside down, and set onto the roof rack. The Walker Bay 8 weighs about 75 lbs, empty. Once it was set on the roof rails, I used strong bungie cords to wrap around the roof rails and boat racks. Don't use cheap bungie cords! We once took the boat on a long road trip to the Florida Keys, on I-95, and the bungie cords held just fine.
