Walker Bay:
Walker Bay Nature Reserve lies on the south-western Cape coast, just east of Hermanus and covers about 4 300 ha. The reserve comprises five coastal areas lying between Hermanus and Die Dam near Struisbaai. The largest area, known as Walker Bay, stretches from the Klein River estuary to De Kelders at Gansbaai. This section is about 1 000 ha in size and has a coastline of 17km featuring a long beach, known as Die Plaat, with white sands and rocky limestone outcrops to the east. Immediately north-west of the reserve lies the scenic Klein River lagoon which, at times, flows into the sea. The northern parts of the reserve consist of stabilised dunefields.
There are significant records of Middle Stone Age people (from about 85 000 to 65 000 years ago) occupying the Klipgat Cave in the eastern section of the reserve. There is also evidence that during the Late Stone Age (about 2 000 years ago), Khoisan people inhabited this site and lived off the plants, fish, shellfish and game in the area.

Hi. It's really sad 😔 to see that place, it was a quiet and relaxing and tranquil place where we did our camping. Buffelsjag. Now it's only down to memories. Thank for the video. Best fishing spot for me..

In the video you mention it is called Plaatjieskraal, is it not Buffelsjagbaai, if it is then yes I have been there in my childhood and it was a "resort" / campsite , the settlement is further down the road and is still present . The dunes reclaimed the area and that is why it is in that state as the site could no longer be used for income . This was in the early 2000s before we stopped going there and chose to go to Die Dam resort. Waaaay before the Abalone farm was constructed. Many fond memories here as a child, always the same families going there during festive seasons . Thanks for re-invoking those memories by going to this forgotten place. You can reach the area without having to go via the beach as the R317 will have a turn off to Buffelsjagsbaai and you can still drive a fair amount to the beach and then walk the rest of the way, there may still be "bridges" that go over the dunes which were used as landmarks back in the day, the 4th bridge is the last one before reaching the bungalows .

Epic video guys!! I tried to do the Walkerbay trip in May, also looking for that beach driving experience but there are boards everywhere saying you not allowed to go past a certain point? I never got close to the beach. How did you guys manage to get passed this?

Nice video.. but please don't mislead ppl ..it is strictly illegal to drive anywhere other than the demarcated roads .. tomorrow all your viewers will be in the beach in search of an "experience" and more of the area will end up closed to the public..

It's illegal to drive on the beaches in this reserve. There are many signs throughout this reserve as well as at the entrance informing visitors that it's illegal to drive on the beaches. There are clear designated roads to drive on. It's very disappointing to see so many people completely ignoring the laws with no care whatsoever for the coastal ecosystem.

Yes, driving beneath the high water mark is illegal in South Africa. To save the white mussels? Or bloublasies. Cape Nature will confiscate the vehicle of a tax-paying family that wants to have a quite pick-nick here. But they don't have a problem when their own vehicles driving here. Or the vehicles from perlemoen poachers. Namibia is very serious about conservation, but they allow beach driving. Despite that, the Namibian coastal nature is in a far better state than here in South Africa.

Beach driving is banned. Full stop. But not because of a careful study that have taken the welfare of beach animals in consideration. Same with the government study that said the sale of open shoes and cigarettes should be banned to save people from Covid. And that Ivermectin is good for mamals, but bad for humans. Same with the little harbour in Bettiesbay where boating has been disallowed. Despite record growth in penguin numbers. In the last week fishing there has been banned to help the penguins. Meanwhile the growing penguin population has moved into residents yards and even across the tarred road. But the recent study has found that these penguins are endangered. Who did this study? Julias Malema? Cape Nature is just as idiotic as the rest of South African's government institutions.
