Thank you Tara. I can swing my arms, but sometime I still kind of dragging my affected leg a little. Sorry if this is out of topic. Please help, what kind of exercise to eliminate dragging leg.
Thank you for watching and for sharing your story! There are a variety of reasons why you might be dragging your foot. Check out the playlist "hip and walking exercises". I think you can find some videos on that playlist that will help.
Thankyou Dr. for this video, I am a stroke patient doing regular exercise. I currently walking with a little support using a wheel chair. Initially I use both arms in the wheel chair to push it while walking. But I found it more easy when I push the wheel chair using right arm and keep the left arm ( my left side is the affected one) free for swing. By watching your video it is so clear the reason behind this. Thanks a ton for your video and advices, it is really very helpful for people like me who couldn't find such expertise . I am sure this will help a lot of people like me who are striving to come back to normal after the stroke. Thanks once again, Rajesh Ravindran
I live with two friends who are older than I am and one of them has Parkinson's so she has trouble with arm swings and the other one just had knee surgery and he is osteo arthritis in pretty extreme. The the husband with the osteoarthritis he does excessive I'm swinging with his left side because he wears a Fitbit and I'm worried that it's going to make him fall. And he's being very stubborn about trying to walk too fast and he also will start walking without the walker occasionally just so he can swing his arm so he's bit bit registers his steps. Anyway he's really big compared to his wife whose 4'11. Without all the typos as he was probably 6'1 and he's been losing weight but he was massively overweight so here's a lot of mass in the center of his body and I go to work and I worry.
You talk about being unstable and I’ll tell you how my walking looks. It looks as though I’m a puppet on a string whose operator has had too much to drink😂
Super exercises and explanations, thank you Dr. Tara! 🙏 Especially love the rotation with the rod. It also stretches and challenges the upper arm muscles which tend to shorten with the high tone. Gives a nice stretch feeling. Many thanks again 💝💛💝.
I wanted to let you know that your videos are so helpful to me. I suffered two strokes 8 yrs ago and I find the excercises in your videos are still very effective in my recovery. Keep them coming!
Thank you for watching. This makes me so happy. I am happy to be able to help people who do not live close to my clinic. I am grateful for RU-vid to provide a platform to do this. I also appreciate that you share such positive feedback. It is truly what keeps me going.
Thanks for watching! This is a perfect exercise if you have Parkinson's disease. You are most likely dealing with the "rigidity" that I mention in the video. The laying down exercises will help with the rigidity. Also check out the Parkinson's Disease playlist where I have another video talking about arm swing.

Orlando Neuro Therapy Orlando Neuro Therapy Dear Dr. Tara, so far, I've gone through a longer period of recovery. The surgery doctor said I only have 30% probability of survival. After coma, I had severe Spasticity. My physical therapist said I can only walk to my neighbor's house in my life. At that same time, I am studying for PhD. Although I didn't continue to my Phd, I can walk like a normal person now.But some details should be practiced more like foot drop, the strength of knee, and also arm swing and so on. Your videos help me a lot, I practice every day. Thank you. Although there are many difficulties and obstacles, I still believe that through my efforts, I have been improving. In my current situation, I'm so worried about my arm, especially my hand. So I hope please you could upload the videos about hand, although I know the progress is that first shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. I could follow your videos and practice more and more. I appreciate a lot. Dr. Tara, Thank you for your guidance and company. Patients like me, let's work hard together!
Yes, one of MANY items to relearn after my stroke. My PT could not explain to me why it so important. Thank you. Also NEVER give up. Thank you so much.
Love these exercises, especially the gym ball & the one with the rod. I’ve done a lot with the ball, going back to my pre-stroke days, but didn’t realize this one could be so helpful with my walking stride. Thanks!
Dear Dr. with love and a humble heart thank you so much for your Amazing advice and help and time that you give.. My husband is coming on .. Blessings to you and all watching. Never give up❤
hello dr tobias when it comes to relearning how to walk it's been six years since my stroke, what i've learned is I have developed bad habits when it comes to walking:swinging my leg out and hitching my hip is what is holding my back keeping erect is the biggest thing, hunchingprevented my developing the tension in my quadracep needed to bend my knee, If I had the ability to use my affected arm I think I would be walking, the ability to trust my left ankle has been key, I'll get there when I do I would like to thank you for your dedication to this channel,I've learned a lot, since I have had more than one OT tell me I have little hope of regaining use of my left arm, you have been much appreciated.
Had surgery on my hip, broke it, broke my shoulder, no surgery, heal my itself. Now, 3 1/2years later still walk good. had another fall 1 1/2 yrs ago. My balance, the pain and my walking is still not good. The Dr, said since Im slim the screws is irritating my skin thats why Im still in pain. Another surgery to take the scews out will cure the pain. Dont want that so Im still exerciseing. Can you suggest any other exerciser I can do?
excellent! if i may ask do you have any similar video about hip rotators and gluteus medius (which is the hip stabilizer if i understand correctly) thx and great work!
My spouse has no sensation on one side. It’s been years since his stroke. He doesn’t have neglect (he has an affected right side) but he isn’t using what he doesn’t feel. Seeing more spasticity with time and rather than swinging the arm, he is curling it and drawing it into his body and sometimes just doesn’t move it. This definitely affect his balance now.
Dr Tara, you nailed it again, I had a SAH in April, 2015. I have been making SLOW progress since, thankfully, but your videos are speeding the progress up. I had to use assistive devices for a few years and I was already thinking that the necessary use of them with my right arm had altered my arm swing as when I concentrated on swinging the arm, my hips, lack of counter rotation, would make me twist with the momentum resulting in more difficulty. I’ve ordered the recommended aids and I’m looking forward to doing the exercises you recommended, the first I’ve heard of these despite many PT sessions by several PT’s., though I was beginning to figure it out by myself. The information you provide is exceptionally on the mark and I thank you for your obvious love and concern for helping us stroke survivors to regain our lives and become the best and most able people we can be. I THANK YOU with all I have within me! Secondly, I always hear you referring to the affected side. Have you considered a video addressing when someone has spasticity in both legs? Is this uncommon? When or why does the spasticity on both sides occur? Location damage has been done in the brain? Keep up the amazingly helpful videos! Thank you again!
Thank you for watching and for leaving such and kind, motivating comment. I am so glad you find the videos helpful. This is why I do what I do. :) As far as the spasticity in both legs, yes, that is uncommon after a stroke which typically only effects one side of the body.
Hi I’m 15 and I have social anxiety and get anxious while walking so it makes me not swing my arms and I can’t normally swing them, how can I fix that!
Hi Dr T Great why & how - used walking frame for 2 years. On 2 sticks for the last 2 wks. Is this productive or counterproductive? In the natural way to move. Cheers D
Definitely keep the why. It’s what makes your videos good I think and definitely helps with my motivation to do stuff. Now I have to stop watching you to avoid overloading 😂 . One thing at a time .
Thank you very much, dear Dr.Tara, for your hard work!!Only your competent lessons help to understand, how to properly perfom exercises, that move towards recovery. Thank you!!!
Dr. Tobias, i follow your channel every week. What i have notice, that you never speak about finger and how you gain power in your finger. I am 52 and had a brainstem stroke in februari 2017. What is the diffrent between a brain stroke and stroke. I mean a inschemic, whitout any bleeding.
The NHS physiotherapists. do not go through over 90% of the exercises that you show. Which suggests time that the NHS physiotherapists do not have the same qualifications, knowledge ,or training that you have and are very budget orientated as we have a right wing conservative government in Britain which has made health care staff morale very low .
What if you don't even have a previous injury ? Why would someone not swing their arms when walking ? Should they have swinging arms and therefore do these exercises too.
Wow this excercise seem to be very helpful, I have been struggling to swing my hand , and this is the best I have found, I will work with this excercise and tell you the result thankyou Tobis❤️
'Tara' is a Bengali word, in English it means star. You and your program is like a star. I got stroke last year of the last day of February still I have problem on my hand rotation and wrist. please do some exercise for wrist movement. thank you for your work
#strokearm Dr. Tara Tobias, just want to say that my arm is much loose now after I did the arm exercise from your past videos. And I can stretch it more now (downwards).need to learn how to sway while walking. Thanks for your videos.
Hello tara, I found you thru the support group I'm in. Your such a big help. My stroke was Dec. 16 2019. Thank u again. My question is what is a good exercise for strengthen the hip and or leg muscles
Thank you so much for watching! I am so glad you are feeling comfortable commenting. We all would appreciate you insights when and if you feel comfortable to share. We all learn better together ;)
Doctor you are awesome. You have answers for everything. Can you kindly clarify whether your advice is only for stroke patients or even for patients suffer from spine related neuro issues?
Thanks for watching! That is a great question! Yes, most of the explanations are about how to get the body to move efficiently. So, anyone who is weak or having trouble walking will find value in these explanations :) The "benefit" of having more of a spinal issue is that you are further down the "hierarchy of motor output". What that means is that things like attention, concentration, and some higher level "thinking" that occurs with movement will not be an issue for someone with a spinal injury. I hope that makes sense.
Thank you doctor. I have already started doing the relevant exercises. I am quite positive that shortly I will be seeing the results. Thanks once again
Thank you for watching and for commenting! if it is in both legs, it might be just the way your legs are built. Does it cause pain or interfere with any activities?
@@rehabhqofficial yes, it does. If i stand for more than 10 minutes in one location i have severe pain while sitting down or on chair and I can't do squats or else my legs swell up. I need help.
