I'm a 4th generation Chinese America living in Hawaii. My husband is from Sweden so I have traveled and seen much of Europe. Sadly, I've never been to China yet. I speak Swedish and French but sadly cannot speak Chinese, and my heritage is Chinese. :( What beautiful and interesting videos you produce! They are produced with such a lovely sincerity and warmth, I feel I have been able to travel, and see personally these incredible far away places. I just discovered your channel by chance and watched your "Narrowest City" episode with rapt attention. The smaller cities and less traveled towns in the interior of China are just spectacular, the people and food so warm and welcoming! New Fan and Subscriber of your videos! I hope you don't feel bad about your limited chinese, because in my experience, most multi-generation people in N. America cannot speak the language of their heritage unless it's english. I'm a 3rd-gen, mongrel mix of english, irish, russian, polish and ukrainian who doesn't know any words of my non-English heritage except "Da" and "Nyet" in russian. I know much more mandarin because my wife is first gen chinese-cdn, perfectly fluent in both english & mandarin, as are our children thanks to her and her great parents. In the 90's we moved to hong kong and then to malaysia and singapore. I love it here, we became quite wealthy, far more easily than is possible now in the declining US and we live tax-free (except for sales tax), and I will never again live in US or Canada as we had to choose citizenship so we renounced ours as have a million hardworking happy americans overseas in the past decade. Now proud and "Asian"... so I went the opposite direction of your great-great-grandparents, haha. Speaking of languages, an interesting difference between the US vs Singapore & Malaysia is that almost everyone here is fully fluent in at least 3 languages - if you're not, it's like there's something wrong with you... So I feel a little dumb here about that, which I never felt back home. Oh well, I catch a break about my limited language abilities bcuz I don't look Asian, lol. Singapore is amazing. You should add that to your travel list as I think it'll blow your mind - and also do bring your oldest surviving chinese ancestors to see how east Asia has changed. Ofc, Hawaii is lovely too and I think you're lucky to live there, tho I've not been there for years nor ever on Oahu where most live. Fond old trip memories of the other islands tho, nice ppl too.
It's never too late to learn Chinese language. I'm teaching myself Chinese, Russian languages. I know Japanese language just by living in Japan for 6 months came back speaking fluently. It's easier to learn when in the native countries imho.
I must confess that your English is excellent and very easy to understand. Your Chinese, unlike your English, is a language that sounds very foreign to me, the way we see China from Scandinavia. But when you talk to people, I have the impression that I understand them. We are all people of this earth and have the same wishes and dreams even if we use different cultures and languages. Fortunately there is the internet, so we can make our own impressions as citizens of a western country. This protects us from ideological influence by our power elites, who mostly do not mean well with us here in the West or with peoples outside their sphere of influence. It’s an amazing country full of wonder and history, and the best parts are outside the. Major centres, it can be a challenging place to visit, but the people are genuine and curious. Be prepared to have lots of selfies taken for a lot of rural people its there first time to meet a westerner in person. My best advice is the Chinese people are not the same as CCP

Whilst we may not like the country's one and only autocratic leadership, our upbringing instil in us to show respect to address the other party its correct name. Whilst I also dislike communism (not that I love western democracies any better) I would be blind or completely brainwashed not to recognize the incredible achievements of the CPC in building up China to be the second biggest economy in the world and also the improvements to the lives and well being off the Chinese people

I was married to a Chinese lady. I learned so much of Chinese culture from her. I'm American. I never thought our cultures could mesh but she was fascinating as was her Chinese world.

Statically old (@80's) or feeling (Mentally or Physically) old as in weak? May I know what's your fitness level, as in medical terms - such as mobility issues or whatever? I myself have PD (Parkinson D.) @ an early age in my 50's & now am @ 68 but still hardly use my wheelchair; rely only on 4-legged walker, if necessary. Yes, the 3-4 hourly mandatory medication does give an hr or 2 of window's period of rejuved qlty of life... however the rest of periods in- between requires some level of mental/ mind over matters ie my body even for normal daily chores eg personal cares hygiene, minor house-keeping chores & p/t grandchilds mind- ing etc... d big Q&A is: No hired domestic helper? Tried 1 for a 2yrs term but don't work out well & in Singapore is getting too exp. to maintain for a re- three! Just've 2 grit our teeth & be more self-reliant! The Word Attitudes Study was just released - it never gets any media attention cos it doe snot report what the west wants to hear. China comes to for almost every thing including trust in the government, believe that the government is looking after your interests etc. One thing it does badly in is trust in the media - so its not like its propaganda. People in China LIKE being in China way more than we westerners like being in our countries...
I agree! China was (WAS) a place I never wanted to visit but because of her videos, I am dying to visit the places she has taken us. I'm embarrassed to admit, I thought China was all factories, cement, and no fun.
@@reginewelch8052 You`re aware that this is a propaganda account, very likely permitted and maybe even founded by the Chinese state, with the exact goal of making people forget how utter horrible the People`s Republic of China is? Of course the ordinary people in the Chinese countryside are nice. And of course China has an interesting culture. But that doesn`t change a thing about the fact that it`s a totalitarian state with no freedom of speech, no free media, a state that constantly ignores human rights, that throws its citizens in prisons or camps or just straight up kills them if they don`t act like the government wanst them to, that does it best to create dependent slave states in Africa and Asia, that constantly surveilles its citizens to a point that it surpassed every nightmarish dystopia one could imagine, that actively destroys its own land and produces so much waste and environmental damage that even its neighbours suffer while it absolutely does not care about what damage it causes, and that does so many more terrible things. China is not a good place to visit and to support with your money. Watch videos like this, but watch them with a critical mind, and be aware that we`re being shown exactly what the government of the PRC wants us to see.
What I love the most about your videos is that you are clearly afraid of heights but you try to overcome your fear just to show your viewers everything there is to see. Thank you. This channel is just amazing. Why it's not hitting at least a million subscribers yet is just beyond me.
Thank you for yet another excellent video. I am from Canada. Backpacking all over China was my plan before I took my early retirement. I had been on four such 10-weeks trips until my plan was ruined by cancer five years ago. I will be watching every one of your videos as surrogate for my own dreamed trip.

Hello my friend , I have been following your channel for some time now and each video has been wonderful . The view of the cliff road was so beautiful and I agree kind of scary . The old city streets , the food as well the kind friendly people sharing the history is so insightful . I like that they invited you to share a meal with them , treating you like family . A person from the west I think would have a hard time visiting such a lovely place unless they spoke Chinese and even then with that they would have a hard time understanding the fine people and their amazing history . I am glad that we can learn from you and to see the amazing country of China through your eyes . You are welcome to travel in China. You don’t have to speak Mandarin in China, as long as you have translation software installed on your phone, the people will help you enthusiastically. It’s safe to come to China.

I’m half Chinese but I know very little about China. My grandparents had moved to Singapore and I grew up in Canada and not very much Chinese culture was passed down to me in general. But your videos.. wow your videos really ignite something in me. I’m a bit in awe. Thank you for sharing ❤️

I love it when I see people using Zhumulangma instead of Mt. Everest, much like how people are now calling Mt. McKinley by the name the indigenous peoples gave it, Denali.
Can we say China is the most amazing and diverse country in the world? I certainly think so because it has the highest peaks ,the desert, the cold icy northeast, tropical Hainan, Mongolian plains mountainous coastal metropolis

Yan - another great video! Your simple, unpretentious, human interactions with people give us such a good feel of the street and the people there; your drone shots provide great birds-eye views of the fantastic terrains you are visiting. Been to China several times and seen the glitzy and glamorous places (and loved it), but, I realize now, I completely missed the "other side", the true China. "The Unseen China" is such an apt title for your series.
I was dizzy watching you walk on the border of that cliff. What amazing view! About the local food. Just great! Tea leaves, rice, wide noodles , spices , smoked meat. I was in heaven!
When I watched you scrambling along the cliff path, one phase came to my mind. “Bring suffering to yourself”. The view is unspeakable. It is the topography that forces the local residents to construct such dangerous path to connect one place with another. 20km will take an approx. 4-5hrs walk. It is impossible to starve in China even for a fussy eater for there is abundant food to feast on. Thank you for taking the risk and showed us places no tourists go

I just began watching your videos today, I love everyone of them. I quit school at very young age in China in a remote village. I can understand almost almost every thing your say in Chinese but of course also in in English. I haven't traveled much in China so thank you for bringing all these videos.
Like your videos, it is always so calming and informative to watch. Thanks for putting up subtitles in English and Chinese. Your videos seem to bring more realism of the local cultures. May be they see you as Chinese and also not coming in as a large group helps showing the interaction with the locals much more grounded. That cliff looks scary yet so beautiful and the woman just walked pass by, right on the very edge like nothing.😮
I really enjoy your vlogs, the food is fascinating , very different from the westernised versions we get outside of China. The view from the path was amazing I;m glad you did what yo could my fear of height would not have allowed me to get past the shrub at the start of the mountain path. I have also seen in the Philippines. The hanging coffins. The tradition is claimed to have been practicing for over 2,000 years and Sagada people believe that placing the coffins on the side of a cliff, the deceased would be brought closer to heaven/their ancestral spirits.
I was actually wondering when you where going to make your way there the first moment I saw this road a few weeks ago. I'll just stay in my very flat Netherlands and observe from a save distance. Thanks for another wonderful video. ✌

Really salute those peoples who built the cliff road. Now there are modern roads & tunnels constructed, thanks to the Chinese government & engineers/workers.
