Meir is the main shopping street in Antwerp, Belgium. It is the most important shopping area in the country, both by number of shoppers and by rent prices.[1] The street has been mostly pedestrianised since 1993.
In the centre of Antwerp, Meir connects the Antwerp City Hall with the trains at Antwerp Central Station.
Between 2002 and 2004, it was the most expensive shopping street in the Benelux. Since the opening of the historic Stadsfeestzaal shopping centre in 2007, Meir regained that position. It has the highest rents of any street in Belgium, at 1,700 €/square metre/year.[2]
The name comes from the old Dutch word "meere" (lake). Meir used to be a so-called "wood lake" (houtmeer), where wood destined for use in furniture would be kept wet for a time.
Meir 50: Royal Residence, built in 1745, served as the Antwerp residence of the Kings of Belgium.
Meir 85: Osterrieth House, built in 1746 in full rococo style.
The Meir in Antwerp is the busiest shopping street in Belgium. This is evident from the biannual passer-by counts of the real estate agency Fastigon. With its 290,000 passers-by per week, the Antwerp Meir beats the Brussels Rue Neuve, which has 230,000 visitors per week. At the previous count, the Meir, at that time with 180,000 visitors a week, still had to give way to the Nieuwsstraat.
The Fastigon retail property research bureau counts the number of visitors in the main Belgian shopping centers every two years. The flow of passers-by is not only important for the retailer's sales potential, but also for the owner because of the impact on rent and property value.
The Antwerp Meir will be the absolute leader in 2012 with 290,000 passers-by per week, ahead of the Brussels Nieuwstraat (230,000) and the Liège Vinâve d'Ile (200,000).
In the shopping streets with a weekly passage of 100,000 to 150,000 visitors, the growing popularity of Mechelse Bruul is striking: from 100,000 visitors per week in 2006 to 140,000 visitors in 2012. This brings the Bruul to the same level as Gentse Veldstraat and Brugse Steenstraat and it passes the Diestsestraat in Leuven (110,000). The Lange Steenstraat in Kortrijk attracts 90,000 visitors a week. In Genk, the focus has shifted towards Stadsplein-Sint-Martinusplein, with 70,000 visitors a week, to the detriment of Rootenstraat.
The counting results sometimes vary due to local circumstances, such as work, new projects or city marketing, or other influencing factors such as the weather or local parties.
