Welcome back to Hertfordshire! Finally, myself and the very lovely Candice have some wellies to tackle the muddy footpaths and flooded roads. This was a 5 mile circular route from the AA 50 Walks In Hertfordshire guidebook, in and around the village of Wheathampstead and The Lea Valley.
The village itself is full of history and historical plaques on important buildings, but the real important piece of history lies on the outskirts of the village, in fact the boundary. The Devil's Dyke and The Slad, two huge defensive ditches dug around the village to protect it from invasion during the Iron Age. It was in fact the tribal capital of a Belgic tribe, known as the Catuvellauni, that invaded from what is now Belgium via the Rivers Thames and Lea. The capital moved to modern St. Albans in 20BC. Julius Caesar and the Romans invaded and supposedly defeated the tribe here in 54BC. It is considered to be one of the largest and most important British Iron Age settlements!
Elsewhere, the route took us through the Lea Valley and along the banks of the River Lea itself, very high and fast flowing at the moment due to the heavy rainfall recently. We stopped for lunch at Nomansland Common and reviewed a new cider and some more of my mum's cakes.
The wellies were fantastic, perfect for this length of walk. Any further and I think our feet would ache a lot and walking shoes and boots would be more suitable. But the wellies meant we could walk through anything and stay warm and dry, plus cleaning them was much easier!
