The construction of Fukuoka Airport began in 1944 by the former Japanese Army as Shibata Airfield, but was confiscated by the U.S. military immediately after the war ended in 1945, and the airport has been operated as "Itazuke Airfield" under the control of the U.S. military since then.
In April 1951, a 2,800-meter runway was completed, and in October, a domestic civilian air route (Tokyo-Osaka-Fukuoka) was opened, and in September 1965, a regular international air route (Fukuoka-Busan) was opened. >With the postwar reconstruction, the airport developed as a trunk airport for a variety of domestic and international flights.
Under such circumstances, the Japan-U.S. Security Consultative Committee decided to transfer Itazuke Airfield to Japan in December 1970, and in April 1972, the airport was put into service as Fukuoka Airport, a second class airport established and managed by the Minister of Transportation, and at the same time, "Aircraft Noise Prevention around Public Use Airfields At the same time, it was designated as a specified airport under the "Law Concerning Prevention of Injury Caused by Aircraft Noise around Public Aerodromes.
In April 1974, the former Terminal 2 (now the south side of the domestic passenger terminal building) was opened for use, and in April 1981, the former Terminal 3 (now the north side of the domestic passenger terminal building) was opened for use, as the number of passengers increased. The terminal has been developed to become an air hub in western Japan.
In March 1993, the Fukuoka City Subway line was introduced and Fukuoka Airport Station opened.
The airport continued to improve and expand its facilities, and in May 1999, the international passenger terminal and cargo building were put into service. With the construction of the international terminal building on the west side of the runway, the eastern building became a facility exclusively for domestic flights, and the passenger terminal building was divided into east and west sections across the runway.
In June 2012, the "Domestic Terminal Area Redevelopment Project (terminal building setback, taxiway redundancy, etc.)" was initiated.
In June 2015, in response to further increases in airline demand, the domestic passenger terminal redevelopment project at Fukuoka Airport began, and was completed in January 2020 after approximately five years of work.
In March 2016, the airport was designated as a "congested airport" under the Civil Aeronautics Law.
In August 2018, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism and Fukuoka International Airport Co.
Ltd. began operating Fukuoka Airport in April 2019.
In March 2020, the Nata Heliport was newly established in Higashi Ward, Fukuoka City, enhancing the operational functions of both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft.
In addition, construction of an additional runway is underway by the government to be ready for use in 2025.
In addition to steadily ensuring the safe and secure operation of the airport, we will further strengthen the relationship of trust with the surrounding community, increase demand by launching new airline services, and provide enhanced services to passengers.
We will also steadily promote the provision of enhanced services to passengers, aiming to become a "top-class international airport in East Asia".
