As a former D1 walk-on who spent my last 2 years of eligibility on the fall 45 man roster but not the spring roster I thought I’d share this day 1 Tryouts speech by the head coach... “Let me set expectations...if you think you are making this team as a DH think again, I have 35 recruited guys on this roster who can hit, what I need is good defense and potentially pitchers who can throw hard enough to get out Big Ten hitters...”. Ps. Hard enough in the late 80’s was low 80’s...how some things have changed and others have not

I am a True D1 WO. I spent 2 years at the school before walking on to the team as a pitcher and here is what I did to go contacting the coach. First off I sent an email to the head coach directly with videos of me pitching(DO NOT DO THIS). Head coaches have a lot to attend to and don’t have time for videos sent to them most of the time. After not hearing back from the head coach I sent my video to the recruiting coordinator and strength coach. Both responded pretty quick and was in front of a coach within a week. The tryout I went to was individual and was with the recruiting coordinator. They do not want to see anything other than velocity if you are going as a pitcher. I can speak from experience that about 20 of the 30 pitches I threw were fastballs and trying to throw the piss out of the ball. Lemme know if you have any specific questions! I’d be happy to help!

Hey, I’m entering my second year of college at one of the blue chips of college baseball (UF). I passed up on several Juco, d2, and d3 offers as well as some smaller D1 PWO’s out of HS to pursue the academic route. I’m kinda rethinking that decision just because of the passion I have for the game. If I decided to play I would probably have to transfer just because UF is obviously competitive. Would you say that walking on was worth it? Did/do you have a decent amount of playing time? And how did you stack up compared to the other players considering you were out of the game for so long?
@jstone77jb
@jstone77jb 4 года назад
Aaron Yurcisin Yeah it probably would be extremely difficult to walk-on to UF lol. I took the academic route as well after quitting a few years ago. I walked on last December and got a lot of playing time considering I was brand new to the team and didn’t train with them during the fall. What position are you? Because that definitely plays a big part in being looked at
@jstone77jb
@jstone77jb 4 года назад
Aaron Yurcisin And walking on was definitely worth it! My school is a mid-major btw
@aaronyurcisin5702
@aaronyurcisin5702 4 года назад
JStoneBoss Sorry for the late response lol. But I played CF/SS primarily, however, I also pitched my jr and sr seasons because our rotation was weak and I had decent velo. What positions do you think get the most attention?
@jstone77jb
@jstone77jb 4 года назад
Aaron Yurcisin pitchers 100%! most teams carry around 13 pitchers at least. And most teams will primarily use 3 starters 5 main relievers and 1-2 closers/setup guys. This is usually the case for every team. But if you want to be noticed for hitting, I can say that arm strength and exit Velo are probably the biggest things that will get a coaches attention.
@bigbanknewyork3655

PWO vs WO. PWO is a preferred walk on in which HC specifically scouted you & ran out of schollies. WO is extremely extremely rare to make the team.

This is accurate... I was a football player and got recruited to play QB at D2 Gannon Univ... spent a year there, then transferred to try and walk on at Akron U D1 baseball program and almost made it.. but had to play nearly perfect and still got cut. Huge regret in my life!! That was 24 yrs ago!!! Now I coach football and baseball at the high school level and tell my kids all of the time go where you will play... don’t go to a school just bc it’s D1 and nothing else.

@unclestinky6388

I think the best chance to walk on is to try at a level beneath your level so that you stand out in the brief opportunity you will have. Like, maybe a player could walk on in DII or DIII if that player was recruited by DI schools but prefers to go elsewhere. Also, I think a player has the best chance to catch a coach's attention if there is something physically that stands out about the player. Such as size, speed, throwing arm or maybe power if you even get the chance to swing a bat.

So I know this video is a little dated but I figured I’d still comment. I never played baseball in high school though I wish I did but instead I played tennis. I started tennis the summer if freshman year and got hooked on it and tried to get in contact with high level coaches and after being told I can’t enough times I eventually proved them wrong and even ended up being coached by one of them. I ended up reaching a very high level of tennis within 3 years and it was almost unreal how good I got in that short of time. I had multiple colleges scholarships in which I turned down because I got an academic scholarship at a D1 school I live near. Long story short from my experiences I learn new things very fast and am very athletic and have considered making the transition from tennis to baseball. I know I can do whatever I put my mind to and I actually hit for the first time ever since I was about 8 or 9 with 2 buddies that are going to play college ball and they were really shocked how well I was hitting for never picking up a bat and seriously hitting. Do you think if I was to try and walk on for my college team would it be best for me to focus on batting since the band and eye coordination from tennis is there or should I try and learn pitching since the serve motion is relatively the same? Which do you think would be better to focus on to walk onto the team?

@thalloutboy

Tirso Alvarado I know of a number of div 3 schools that take walk ons quite regularly. They tell a lot of guys to walk on, and a lot of guys (even recruits) get cut. I would stay away from those sorts of teams, to be honest.

Hes speaking the truth. I walked on a D1 team, bit was recruited and cut from another school. Had to sit out a hole year and resign to the fact i was probably not playing college ball. Luckily for me, not so much for others, due to discipline issue and 2 injuries, i made the spring roster after extremely limited playing time during fall ball. But the coaching staff was upfront and did not blow smoke. I was one of the .1% people where it worked out. I still barely played. Fortunately, I had a little academic money and had realistic hopes. It was tough not knowing week to week and month to month if i had a spot. But I got a degree snd got to play/watch from dugout at some really good schools. Like Matt alluded to, it takes a lot of luck and i would add perseverence and humility.

@thalloutboy

Kyle Woodring Depends on the team. I wouldn't recommend walking on to a high level NJCAA D1 team like Mesa CC or Crowder, as those schools tend to be extremely competitive, and they have a lot of money for signing recruits. Lower level jucos, especially D2 or D3, tend to be easier to make as a walk on.

Thall For Life I’m going to Southwestern Illinois College which is NJCAA D1. I was injured my senior year of high school so I wasn’t very highly recruited. And they have a new coach.

This is the first time I have ever given a thumbs down to one of your videos. I walked on to the hockey team at a Big Ten school and later walked on to the baseball team as well. As a Division I strength and conditioning coach after that, I’ve seen players walk on and be accepted. One was largely because they were a 4.0 student and the coach wanted somebody who could impact the team GPA. In part because of yours truly, that pitcher became good enough and succeeded at Division I and played for four years. There is no such thing as can’t. Still love your work, just disagree with you on this one.
