The Kungsleden Trail has been on my mind for a couple of years now, but after 'failing' to walk the entire Pennine Way in 2015 I wanted to try some shorter walks first.
With this trail everything turned out to work very well. I began my walk on June 14th, the day that the first huts opened for summer season. At Abisko quite a few people had returned from Tjäktja Pass during the days before, but by the time I arrived at Tjäktja almost everyone managed to get over the pass. Especially early in the morning it was well possible to walk over the frozen snow. And after Tjäktja I knew that it wouldn't be too difficult to get to Hemavan. The more days you have, the easier it is, I would say. I spent 24 days on trail, which was much more than necessary. But it gave me the chance to have a lot of very late starts and to record a lot of footage :-D
One of the most special things about this trip were the 24h of daylight, which I had never experienced before. So this song (The Sun by Fritz Kalkbrenner) was in my head all the time and it would have been in the video if there were no copyrights: open.spotify.c...
The trail turned out to be even greater than I had imagined it to be with so many awesome views everyday. It was my first trip to Sweden and I will definitely go back again.
It will take a couple of more weeks to edit the second part of the trip, but it should be finished by October.
This is the first part:
June 11th: IC 2022 to Hamburg, then IC 431 night train to Copenhagen
"12th: SJ train X 2000 to Stockholm, then night train 94 to Abisko
"14th: Abisko to Šiellajohka Bridge 2:30 - 4:07
"15th: to Alesjaure 4:08 - 5:47
"16th: to Tjäktja 5:48 - 7:21
"17th: to Sälka 7:22 - 8:46
"18th: to Kaitumjaure 8:47 - 10:14
"19th: to somewhere 2 km before Vakkotavare 10:15 - 12:00
"20th: to Saltoluokta 12:00 - 12:59
"21st: to Sitojaure 12:59 - 14:12
"22nd: to Aktse 14:12 - 14:54
"23rd: to Tjoalajáhká river 14:55 - 16:05
"24th: to Kvikkjokk 16:06 - 17:38

Hi! You did it in 10 days? How many km a day did you do? Was there a lot of snow ? Thank you 🙏🏻

Hi Hubert, it took me 11 days from Abisko to Kvikkjokk, and more around 20 days in total, I walk quite slowly and film a lot 😌 the average was around 22km per day I would say!

There was lots of snow on the Tjäktja pass, and some people had to turn around during the days before, at the beginning of June 😌 luckily, it was very sunny when I started and a lot of snow must have melted and it was possible to just walk over it even though it was still a lot of snow for about 10km ✨ if you walk early in the season, you also need to check whether the boats/ferries are running

Hi there - great to see you're back (well, in a RU-vid' sense anyway ;-)), and with one of our bucket list hikes! We were interested to read in your intro about the snow / people turning around at the pass. Would you say your start date was a little early or is that kind of snow normal there during the peak hiking season?

Hi :-) over the last few months I have had a look at your videos of the PCT every now and then! Have you made it? Yes, it has been a little early and I was quite worried up until Tjäktja - nobody at Abisko could tell me if it was possible to hike Tjäktja pass and some people must have called crossing it "the hell" around June 12th.. it is told that the Kungsleden can still be quite snowy in mid-July and that lakes can be frozen until the beginning of July... But usually it should be possible to hike around mid-June. On June 14th, STF posted that snow and water levels in the North were normal for that time of the year. Later on, they wrote that conditions were better than usual. Walking over the snow was much easier than expected anyway. I guess that the snow on passes along US trails can be much worse and people still manage to keep going. And there definitely was a man who managed to cross Tjäktja a week before me. It will save you worries about the snow if you start in late-July / August, but I really enjoyed the early start :)

Hey! Nice video ! I would like to hike the kungsleden from beginning of June but I need more Informations before 🙂 - Do the hike cross some villages to buy food? - Are the boats still there in june to cross rivers/lake? Also feel free if you have any tips, thank you 😀

Hi Hugo, thank you 🌝 the Kungsleden is a good choice! Enjoy your trip! I would be careful about starting at the beginning of June! The snow levels at Tjäktja pass can still be quite high throughout June. It is possible but when I started mid-June, I was told that people had returned from the pass because the snow had been too much. The STF sometimes updates about snow levels on their Facebook page. If you really decide to hike in June, it is advisable to do the Tjäktja pass as early in the morning as possible when the snow is frozen. Then you will sink into the snow less often. Apart from the shops at the huts, there were shops in Abisko, Jäkkvik, Ammarnäs and Hemavan only I think. And the huts seem to open quite late this year, you can find the opening times on the STF website (Tjäktja and Teusajaure open 24 June and Saltoluokta 18 June for example). Unfortunately, I am not sure if the rowing boats are available before the huts open 🙊 I did the walk just when the huts started to open or shortly before that when the hut wardens had already arrived. The dates for the Saltoluokta ferry are on the STF website as well (seems 18 June too) I hope this helps 🌛 Good luck 🍀☀️

Hi , I see that you hiked this trail in June in both sandals and boots. Did this combination work well for you? Would you recommend to others? Thank you J

Hi, yes, this combination worked well at that time of the year! I enjoyed the sandals and they gave me enough support. It wasn't too cold. They can be good for the few small river crossings that you need to do along the trail. However, in the snowy parts, the boots were great. They kept my feet dry for most of the time. I don't know if the snow would have been enjoyable in trailrunners 🤔 the problem was that I wanted to try the sandals because I tend to get blisters. Unfortunately, the sandals did not help with that :( so they were not extremely useful but I liked walking in them anyway. Generally you would be alright with only one pair of shoes as well :D

Hi! You put much effort in this video! :-) Thank you. Maybe you can help me with too. We do the part from Nikkaluokta to Kvikkjokk in the last week of june. - Did you have any problems with mosquitos around that time? If yes, which parts were problematic? - You hiked from Vakkotavare to the waterfall and then took the bus? Do you recommend that? Or just take the bus for the whole distance from Vakkotavare to Kebnats? I really appreciate that you shared that video :) Thanks again.

Hi, you're welcome! This video is also a nice personal memory of the hike, so it was definitely worth the effort 🌞 enjoy your hike and all the sunshine you get at that time of the year! It's amazing! In the northern part, I cannot remember any mosquitos and they weren't a real problem in general. But there may have been some outside my tent in the evenings from Saltoluokta onwards and I can definitely remember them being at Sitojaure and Kvikkjokk but they weren't too bad! 🙈 It depends on whether you enjoy road walks or not and if you have enough time to reach the ferry when you walk. I personally enjoyed the road walk and I would have walked all the way until Kebnats if I had more time to reach the afternoon ferry. I remember being a bit sad about not having managed that later on. I walked until the Stora Sjöfallet bus stop but I only tried to walk it all because I like the thought of walking continuously, without using other transportation, not because I thought it was a beautiful walk in the first place. Most people would find the road walk too boring I guess 🙊
