A walking tour through a part of Zagreb's historic center: starting at Nova Ves, including Kaptol and ending at Zagreb's main square - Jelačić Square (Trg bana Josipa Jelačića).
Nova Ves is one of the oldest streets in Zagreb and in archaic Croatian it means "a new village". It is an extension of Kaptol - one of the two medieval hilltop towns (Gradec and Kaptol) which constitute Zagreb's historic medieval core. Kaptol, as opposed to free royal town of Gradec, used to be under jurisdiction of the Catholic church so even today Kaptol is the seat of Croatian Archbishopric. Zagreb cathedral, which dominates the center of Kaptol hill, is a Neo-Gothic structure built in the late 19th century after an earthquake destroyed the original centuries old Romanesque building in 1880. As we pause to admire the Cathedral you'll be able to see lots of scaffolding and large stone blocks arranged around the Cathedral. It is being thoroughly renovated at the moment, as yet another earthquake (this time in 2020) badly damaged "the new Cathedral". So... Zagreb Cathedral has a long streak of calamities including earthquakes, fires and Mongol invasions. The tour ends just bellow the Cathedral, at Zagreb's main square, which was really merry on this lovely September morning with lots of street musicians, joyful tourists and busy locals. Enjoy! :)
