Not only did they revisit this with opposite results, but Minute Physics also did the mathematical work to show it’s usually better to run in the rain
@christiangibson1120
@christiangibson1120 4 года назад
the interesting thing would be to know what was wrong with the first tests? Possibly the more that moisture penetrates the clothing, the more that will adhere to the wetsuits - which was not measured in the weighings? That's the only thing I can think of (even though it is questionable if the sprinklers accurately model rainfall)
@best_bud1
@best_bud1 3 года назад
I'd lean towards Mythbusters' results because it was an actual experiment, not just mathematics. Maybe there's some other variable that Minute Physics' video didn't use, like how the human body changes shape as you run or something.
@TheGary108
@TheGary108 3 года назад
I always assumed Mythbusters did it better when they used controlled rain, instead of natural rain. Having wetsuits helps keep the body from absorbing the moisture, or any added moisture from sweat when running.
@thebiber9401
@thebiber9401 3 года назад
@@christiangibson1120 One explanation would be that the overalls didn't cover the head so they ignore a significant amount of water from above. In the minutephysics-equation this means that the first term (wetness per second) goes to zero. But according to the equation you want to minimize this in the first place. So the second term dominates, which is assumed to be constant. But in reality this is not the case. So what we really have to do is using an overall which covers the whole body including the head and then run the experiment again to compare.
@siberianstuntman3344
@siberianstuntman3344 Год назад
@@christiangibson1120 consider that the water would build up on the warehouse floor. Not only that but running has more violent steps than walking. If the second test was running that means there is more potential for splash from footsteps to add water weight.
@Randomizer903
@Randomizer903 5 лет назад
i remember watching on TV they redid this. Since it was artificial rain, it skewed the results. They retested the myth when it started raining for real at the facility and found it's better to run.

there is also the fact that normally there is wind if the wind is facing towards you, you will get water on the front in both scenarios and if it going towards your back then you will get a lot wetter walking because the back doesn't get as wet when you run there is also a difference in how heavy you take steps because of water puddles, if you stomp then you will get a lot more water on your ankles than if you walk

Guys if there's wind blowing water on your front, you will get more wet while walking, it will hit the same spots(only while running you can evade some of the drops that would otherwise land on your head or shoulders.) It will be a matter of how much time are you "under the weather".

Unfortunately, this is one where their methodology is flawed. The short answer is that the results would be reversed if their cotton jumpsuits had included a hood. The correct conclusion is that you should run if you are just as concerned with water that hits your head, as with water that hits you in the front. But you should walk it you have a waterproof hat, preferably a sombrero that covers your shoulders. This is easy to see, if you imagine that they were walking at a very slow pace where it takes 18 minutes, instead of 18 seconds, to traverse the course. The ideal test case would be a sphere floating through the rain. The amount of water that hits is has two easily calculated components: (1) the volume of the “tunnel” the sphere passes through times the density of the rainfall, plus (2) the cross sectional area of the sphere times the rainfall rate (per unit area), times the time it takes to go through the curtain. The only parameter that changes in this calculation is the time, so running helps. But we don’t have an ideal case. In the walking case, the cross section *of* *cotton* *jumpsuit* was essentially zero, eliminating the second component. When running into the rain, it becomes essentially the area of the front of the body.

They left out the factor of rain falling at an angle. If you are running into the rain, you will catch about the same amount as you would if the rain was going straight down. You move into it in both scenarios. But if you are walking into the rain OR walking away from the rain, your front or back side will get covered much more than running. I walk through rain all the time and their is a significant difference of how wet I get depending on if it's angled or not.

Possible testing errors: -no hood -"rain" not at terminal velocity? -"rain droplets" wrong size? Last 2 factors could be relevant because the faster you run, the greater the pressure wave in front of you (big bugs get squished on windshields, but butterflies "surf" over windshields at modest speeds).

Assume in both the case of Fred walking or running the distance is the same and the rate of which the rain falls is the same in both cases. Then running gets less rain on Fred. Assume the distant is infinite. Then how far can Fred run? Of course he can't run infinite, maybe he can. Assume the distant is finite but less than the total distance Fred can run. Fred can always walk, but if he can run, then he should. So Fred should always run in the rain.
@wonggran9983
@wonggran9983 2 года назад
Why should Fred always run? Assume the rate of rainfall is constant, or 100ml/S. Case (1) The distance is 100m. Fred can run 100m but Fred can also walk. However, the time spent in 100m of rainfall running is less than when Fred is walking. Rainfall is ml/S so you get less total ml running than walking. If the distance is infinite, then for the distance Fred can run vs when walking he would have travelled the same distance but in less time and since the rate of rainfall is 100ml/S that short distant in the infinite desintation distance Fred spends less time in the rain and so gets less rain on him. HINT: THE RATE OF RAINFALL IS CONSTANT RATE OF RAINFALL mL/s MILITRES PER SECOND, FINITE VS INFINITE.
