Hi, Ex-Sony audio engineer here. ladies and gentlemen, please do not, and under any circumstances, apply silicon lubricant of any kind to Walkmans (any vintage). It is the major cause of the nylon parts to disintegrate overtime. Let alone applying it to the pinch roller and capstan, which will at very least destroy your cassette. Notice the wow and flutter is horrific. For those asking the question how you refit the spring, there is a hole behind the catch, which you can apply tweezers to, to compress the spring, and hold it at the same time. This allows you to place the slide catch over the spring, hold in place whilst you place the back cover back on.

Is there any sort of lubricant to be used on the gears of a walkman? Thanks.

@@AstonsVintageTechnologyWorkshp Can I ask you something? Why in the world did Sony use a thermoplast over metal on the WM-DD range of center gears? Any engineer from my point of view should know that is a failure waiting to happen, because the softening additives to make the plastic into a thermoplast will dry out over time causing shrinkage and hardening of the plastic. Thus resulting in the famous cracked plastic center gear many Walkman enthusiasts got to know over time. It is almost as if they made the direct drive Walkman models like tanks that never would wear and some boss came in and said "we need a failure point or else we'll never sell them a new one again". So yeah, what is the real reason for the poor design of that WM-DD range center gears? Also what was the true intention of in fact choosing to use plastic wrapped over metal?
@AstonsVintageTechnologyWorkshp
@AstonsVintageTechnologyWorkshp 8 месяцев назад
@@LogiForce86 It's a good question indeed, I think because of the design required the clutch to be made of metal there had to be a compromise somewhere, but I fully agree moulding thermoplastic over the metal was a very stupid idea. They could've gone in any one of multiple designs that would've worked fine but as you say they probably thought more about sales than longevity. I personally would've liked to have seen miniature toothed belts which seem to have a lifespan of about 30 years or more if cared for. All the Best from Aston.

This brought back memories from my job in a Hi Fi shop. This was a common problem with this model. The Sony fix was to make a slightly thicker and stronger belt. They did survive being dropped a little bit better than the first one and it was the first example of a soft touch mechanism which sold it. When it comes to the case a bit of solvent glues it back together. It welds rather than glues.

Probably the most iconic Walkman ever made ! Even Sony never produced anything as good looking as this model ever again. I Ioved that Walkman as a kid and was never able to own one. I keep looking for one on eBay every once in a while,they are very sought after, therefore even for “parts only” ones are Very overpriced..... Great repair work!

thanks for the video. after watching this I pulled apart the broken one I purchased on ebay. replaced the belts and soldered some wires that were damaged from battery corrosion. now it's playing perfectly. was definitely nervous about it before seeing you do it. also the silicone on the volume dial worked a treat, definitely appreciated that little bit of advice.

Great video! I bought one from a carboot sale today for only 3 euros. Belt was completely dry and had same issue as yours. Thank you for the video! I fixed mine while watching your video :) :) Only issue is the eject switch. It will spring back when i put it on but when I assemble the two halves again it stops springing back. Its like the spring either lost its tension or the casing halves are too tight together because if i slightly separate them it springs back ok.

@@backofficeshow I thought I was going nuts but your video confirms it: There are two versions of the volume board, yours matches the one in the service manual. Mine appears to be earlier, just the pot (which seems to have gone bad) and two resistors. Otherwise I got mine back to working with the new belt, I just can't change the volume from max. I've been addicted to taking stuff apart since about age 6 and Sonys are the worst. I bought a CF-450 (with a $1 bid for a cosmetically mint unit...how do you pass that up?) last year that needed a belt. The back cover came off w/no problem. After that, disassembly proved.... ah....challenging. At least the radio function was outstanding: the Stradivarius of small monoboxes.

It sounds like the walkman still has A LOT of wow & flutter, hence I notice you were playing voice tapes where it's not so noticeable. Sometimes just playing the walkman for hours (like, 10 hrs) will cause the silicone to spread through the machine and playback will become more consistent. Sometimes it's because the belt is not exactly the right size. The old belt is often stretched, I saw in another video where the guy measured it with 2 pushpins on a piece of wood and picked new belt that was 10% shorter.

Thank you for the great video. It helped me make quick work of a belt replacement on my ancient Sony Walkman II that had been sitting in a cupboard for years. Unfortunately, with the new belt the warble on playback is terrible. I've checked and cleaned the belt path, no debris stuck on any pulleys or the drive motor capstan. I put a drop of silicone lube on the motor shaft. Made sure that the new belt isn't lumpy, is clean and dry and not too tight or loose. The capstan and idler both move freely. The warble has to be coming from the drive motor. I noticed that your Walkman also was pretty warbly when you first played a test tape. Later in the video the warble with the other test tape it seemed to be gone. What did you do to clean it up?

@callumthomas6152 2 года назад
Hello @Bob Atkins I had the same problem with my wm-2 last year. After I tried for ages to get rid of the warbling it would not go away no matter what belt I used. So i decided to order a belt that was specifically made for this walkman from DeckTech and after I installed it the warbling was gone and I had perfect playback sound. Hopefully you can do the same with yours!

The WM-F41 / WM-F31 (both are identical) is a great model to consider. Also in the family, WM-F43 / WM-F33 (w/graphic eq), and all WM-41/WM-31 models without the "F" (tape only; no AM/FM). The 1st truly mass-produced model. They completely simplified the internals and it snaps together, only 3 screws on the outside, that's everything! Only a single circuit board, much simpler! Sold for $40 in 1987 which was 33% lower than any previous walkman. They sold several millions (I bought two, maybe three). Has retro-cool looks, was the #1 performer in USA's consumer Reports magazine testing among ~25 models, its sound beat out all the $100 models, even the ones from Sony! Can get a broken one for $20-$40 on ebay. Since it's so simple on the inside, it should not be difficult to replace the belts.
