Welcome Aboard VA! We want to finally share with you our new floating home for real. It's been a couple months since we have fully move aboard our new boat and now feel like its time to show you the whole boat.
Here is our walkthrough video of our Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 catamaran. We do a little comparison between our old Fountaine Pajot Lipari 41 and the Helia 44 models, and why we ultimately went with a little bigger boat.
We are thrilled to welcome you aboard VA and show you around!
Thanks for following the adventures of WE!

You guy's Are amazing people. Dude you are a great Carpenter, mechanic, Electrician and it all and the most I'm impressed with is your coffoe table 👏 A-1 brother, and your wife is awesome 👌. I believe she can let you sleep and she can sail that catamaran wherever she wants to go, since I've been watching your channel she has learned so much besides being the best home maker there is. So on that note I just wished I could be able to do what you two can do..so please keep on keeping on guy's and sending out the content that you do it's great love you two!!!

Glad you're lovin' you're Helia. Been on our for a few years now. Your catchment setup is brilliant. Thanks for sharing that. If you're amenable sharing more details, would appreciate more details on the specific components used and if you have any pics of the setup under the mast step and water tank area that would be much appreciated! I found you through the FB Helia owners group. I suspect other owners would appreciate seeing your good work! I've already mentioned it to my FP contact as a wonderful idea for a a factory option on the new boats. Cheers, Jeff & Debby sv Making Memories

It's a beautiful boat. I sailed on one two weeks ago. And thank you for this video. Specifically for the shots of your master cabin. In January I was on chartered 4-cabin Helia. Nice. I also have a Seawind on order. I was wondering if maybe I shouldn't get that in 4 cabin version, use one as a workshop..... two minutes into your video I now completely understand. Your master cabin is absolutely gorgeous, really nice and roomy. btw the hydraulic steering on the Helia we chartered out of La Paz, Mexico, had a huge problem. The repair guys said it was the seals in the hydraulic ram. They couldn't fix it. Made steering really difficult. If you slowly turned the wheel and the rudders would never change. The only way to steer was to give the wheel a hard yank and then yank it back just before the boat reached the new heading. (Autopilot worked fine). (btw if by chance someone reading this chartered that same boat and suffered with that steering tell Dream Charters to give you your money back. It should've been fixed before they sent us out on it. I'm sure it was bad the week before - our boat was changed at the last minute. I wouldn't be surprised if it's weeks or months before the problem is fixed.) tip for you guys: Carry a set of those ram seals and learn how to replace them. It is nevertheless a beautiful boat, easy to sail. For the mainsail traveler I'd replace what they have with a single-crank back-n-forth one (don't know what they're called). There's just a bit more fussing that I think there should be and if you do it wrong (which I almost did) you could get hurt. re: the inside table. The Helia I was on had a full table. Definite plus. Because so much of the 'furniture' in a catamaran (foam and veneer) looks like Ikea I have the idea for my Seawind to get a piece of that lightweight structural foam, get some really nice veneer (birds-eye maple?) and make my own table (or hire someone who can make something really amazing.) Looking at photos of other Seawinds, clearly I'm not the first one to have this idea. I think it would really set off the saloon of any boat.Your table solution is really smart. I'd round those corners, even a one inch radius I think you would definitely notice how much 'friendlier' the table would be. (The Seawind had a table with two fold out leaves, this means I'll have to veneer two sides - no problem, but when folded open there will be 'missing' wedges where the curves meet - I don't see a problem.) I'd also insert a curved solid wood edge all the way round so it's rounded and more comfortable. On the side of the settee near the steps to the starboard hull? Put in a side rail. It can even swing a bit out of the way. A couple of times people sliding out that end started to tumble down the steps. A single rail that would pivot out of the way would remind the person of the drop but also keep them from falling down the stairs backwards. & I loved the night I slept on the top deck in my sleeping bag liner. Be good to have ties on the liner and on a pillow so they don't blow away. I'd put handholds on the sugar scoops to make getting in and out of the dinghy easier. I'd also put them on the hull steps. (I prefer stairs that can be made easier and safer when you can use hands and feet.) I've been in situations where I've seen people repeatedly reach for handholds that weren't there, but should've been, pointed it out, and was then dismissed by the person who'd just been reaching for them - 'nah, not necessary.'

For the water catcher, remember that the first few minutes of rain will wash the dried salt spray off the decks, you definitely dont want to catch that salty water. Perhaps a manual/electric valve to control water tank access ??.

We all can see how visibly excited yall are about your new boat and it is beautiful. How does the cruising speed on the engines compare to the old ones? Fuel usage a little more or about the same since you could run at lower rpm? I am an electrician so hearing about the solar system i really enjoyed and all of the other systems as well. Now lets get those scuba tanks out and go explore....
@WEsail
@WEsail 2 года назад
Ya Jeff thanks man- the motors do use a little more fuel (3/4 gal per hour vs. our old boat at 1/2 gap per hour) but since we are motoring at a slightly less rpm I would have to guess it’s about the same… cheers bud, thanks for watching and commenting

Congrats on your new Helia 44. We are SV Eventually Hull#63. We decided we would search the world for the right Helia 44 and that would be where we would start our live-aboard adventure …which ended up being Turkey!! We have been watching with great interest your additions and modifications to SV VA especially the new found storage. We were particularly interested in the issue of your unfurling jib furler as we have the identical problem. So we were a little disappointed when you gave up on it and went swimming instead (which is exactly what we did). Did you come to any solution or conclusion on the furler?
@WEsail
@WEsail 2 года назад
Well hi and congratulations!! We went about the same plan when looking for a boat and it was actually very close to starting right in your same area as the first boat we looked at was in Montenegro!! But as it worked out we passed on that one and found ours in the Caribbean… anyways, very soon I am going to put together a quick video on all the additions that I have done, some of which we have yet to mention! so it would probably be particularly interesting to people like you with similar cats!! And yes in a few videos I show how I fixed the furler… she’s as good as new now but I’ll be very honest, it was a nightmare job! I did not end up having to take the rig apart, but man, what a tough, dirty job! It would be difficult to explain thoroughly here and since the video is coming out shortly I’ll hope that you can wait for that? If you’re in a pinch and really need some answers, please feel free to email us directly and I will see what I can outline and maybe send some photos! Cheers you guys!

generator ?? a friend who circumnavigated in the 1990's had a lever attached to the engine block with the alternator mounted on it - when they needed ac power for the washing machine or dryer the lever would be swung over and locked down so the the alternator ran on the engine pulleys - depending on fuel usage you might be able to get a weight saving

Hi there. I have concerns about the veneered wood. It is of poorer quality than solid wood because the coatings can come off. What is your impression of the interior quality with regard to the wooden parts?
@WEsail
@WEsail 2 года назад
Ya I share those concerns but here’s what I have learned- most veneers are not made of natural wood so they are quite resilient to the harsh marine environment, but what is susceptible and needs careful preparation is the wood underneath... hope that helps, love the comments and questions!!

Hey Steve you bet glad to share, we get the majority of our money from a rental home that we have back in Colorado that gets us just over $2000/mo. We have also started earning a little from RU-vid now so that’s exciting for us, but ya it’s the home that really allows us to travel like this. We do have a video on how we afford to travel but it’s several years old now (but still very relevant, in between episode 58 & 59) AND have wanted to put together another one about the costs that we have encountered over the last 4 years (also touched on during that other video)

Hello WEsail, I bought a Foutaine Pajot Elba45. Delivery in May 2022. I wonder about the sails. Do you think it would be useful to install a small genoa or a special sail for heavy weather? We see this on catamarans over 45 feet, and as we are going on a long trip, I think it could be very useful. Your opinion as a sailor please? thanks in advance. Good sailing and enjoy your videos. Christophe.

Oh well CONGRATULATIONS!!! Man so exciting!! Well glad you asked- the answer is a little complicated, and as I’m not aware of your planned routes I can’t speak for everywhere on the globe certainly, but the sails that come with the boat are quite robust actually and should last you years, even in heavy weather from time to time (you just have to take care of them, mainly making sure to avoid strife/abrasions/wear points/etc, and most importantly reefing on time!!!) that being said, like a lot of long range sailors, we carry a “storm jib” that is used for 40+ knots of wind (something we have yet to experience). The last thing I would say is that you will likely experience far more light wind days then you will heavy weather days, so my recommendation is to invest in low wind sails prior to worrying about needing any heavy weather sails (again, the factory sails will weather most conditions)! We have used our more than any other sail on the boat, and again, I don’t know where you plan to sail but these light wind sails can be very used in a wide variety of conditions! We have used (and loved) both a pure downwind sail called a ParaSailor, and our current sail, a basic asymmetric spinnaker which is especially useful because it can be flown anywhere from dead downwind (180 degrees apparent wind) to just forward of the beam for a “close reach” as low as 70 degrees apparent, so really quite versatile!! Hope that helps!! Feel free to ask as many questions as you want!! Cheers!

@@WEsail Thank you very much for your detailed answer. The program will be more in the Guadeloupe area, West Indies, Caribbean, etc.. The question of squalls and therefore to be treated. For the strong and very strong wind I will continue my research. The opinions are very different. To be seen ... I will keep you informed. For light wind I know the D code well. I have it on my current Sun Odyssey 440. Super efficient with 115 square meters of surface, and tenable up to 15 knots. You can easily go up to 50 degrees of wind. That being said the code D is limited for "true" downwind from 160 degrees. I will look at the parasailor. Your life and stories are inspiring. And congrats on all the DIY on board. Cool! Hope to see you soon and enjoy. PS: sorry for the mistakes, I translate with Deep because I have to improve my English :-) Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version)

Yep sure do- it’s small but it works off of both the motors and electric, so anytime we motor or anytime we have good sun (solar) we can have hot water :)

Gosh that looks nice! -- QUESTION -- This is going to sound weird, but for some reason, if I am honest, I want to NOT like Catamarans and to prefer sailboats. Not sure why tha tis, but I want to like sailboats more than Cats and we are fighting the "get a Cat" syndrome. Sailboats were like our first love and our dream was to get a sailboat to go around the world and now there is this new thing called a Cat that is messing it up. So weird.

Hope you are having a great time cruising. Question? Do you run your rainwater through the water maker? I hope I have enough money to buy a 40-foot trimaran. I can't sleep much anyway while riding so maybe planning trips right. Maybe i could learn to sleep working at it and maybe the help of some sleep aids. I could have much higher speed even if sailed conservatively. There's not many of them around and might end up buying a new one like the Dragonfly 40 or the Rapido 40 and a house with a dock on the water. The whole world is fixing to open up. Trump said one time he wished everyone else had the same chance he had and i think he meant it by what is fixing to happen but i don't want to discuss it publicly.

Hey well good luck of course, hope it all works out for sure!! And no, the water goes through several filters before entering the holding tanks so it’s good to go, we outline the whole system in an upcoming video, so stay tuned :) cheers

Boat “TOURS” have to be the biggest lame azz waste of time for any sailing channel. If I want a boat tour I’ll go to a marina. Sorry. But. It’s the truth.

I disagree. I enjoy seeing how different people have outfitted their boats. Gives me ideas for my boat.
