Wall Art Wood Sculpture 

I love that you look for the beauty, in the wood, and work from that point, greatness is hidden under the old dried out, stuff. Not done watching, yet. Keep experimenting, that shows creativity, that can be used later.

first let me say what a great job !! after see your work i most likely will try something like it but what i will do is to first paint the 1/4 inch plywood with either a aging stain or maybe a watered down black paint then when i finish paint the back side with a black paint over all . thanks for the idea 's

Pretty cool weathered wood. That is a lot of work. I live by a lake and I'm constantly pulling art wood out of the water. Driftwood also. You've given me ideas. I like the big buffer with wire wheel.

So so beautiful. I have some reclaimed wood from pallets. I'm sanding it now trying to get some ideas. Thank you so much for sharing. I've been wanting to try epoxy to preserve some of the beautiful wood also.

I think there is something really magical about old weathered wood. I think of all time and weather it took to get that distressed. Just one offer of a tip. Try using a quick dry spray paint of a brown color before mounting your boards and that way the plywood won't show nearly so much. Just thinking. beautiful piece though.

So fun to watch! I noticed towards the end though, when you finished painting the plywood on the back, that the hole in middle piece looked like a heart shape! Also, that because you round out the back plywood, it looks pretty when you add the paint. What if...you painted the back a bright color or a bold color (maybe contrasting the wood) & make the piece REVERSIBLE?!?! I think it would look awesome! You'd have to figure out how to add a hanging feature, maybe. But the piece could lean up against a wall or on a mantle or shelf without need to hang. But making it reversible, would be like having TWO pieces! Just a thought...

You might think about using a router with a 45 degree bit to cut back the edges next time it would make quick work out of it. Nice piece though! Can you tell me what finish you used? Thanks for ideas!

Hi Scott, I really enjoy the way you work with the so-called imperfections of wood. I'm just getting started with woodworking and am trying to figure out which tools I should invest in first, especially for chiseling, sanding, smoothing, enhancing the distinct personality of any given piece of wood. i would never use shiny lacquer on old wood! oel is by far better :) it let the wood breathe! and maybe next time without wire? i would fix it on the wall in two pieces

A lot of work,,, but I just don't see the artistry. For me it captures nothing, had I not seen the process and method of making this, It would be very difficult to appreciate the end result. Maybe the wiring spoils whatever it is you visualized, it makes the outer wood 'frame' irrelevant. Sorry.

I definitely would have darkened the plywood so it doesn't take away from the "art" piece. And really if your using old wood for its esthetics, why wire wheel all that beautiful patina away? I do like that you cut away the excess plywood and as much as I loved the center piece of wood, I was thinking a piece of mirror would look beautiful in its place. Overall, I liked it and would love to try it myself..Hmm -P.S. I would never use a high gloss on such an organic piece. It now looks like a mass produced piece. Sorry.

I am an Aussie who also loves to use wood in all forms. My wife always scoffs and laughs at some of the “crap” that I bring home but loves the finished product. Sorry for my directness but the people criticising your work can take a long walk off a short pier. You’re creating art and therefore it speaks to you as you’re creating it. They do not do it, nor can most. I agree that your dialogue is a bit long, but I can understand why. Honestly I would have gone a different direction to your path but I love your work. Hey Scott... another cool video (even the 2nd time around) where you are sharing, inspiring, and teaching others to connect to their artistic selves... me included. Although my wood is old cedar fence planks from nearly 50 years ago, it was extremely weather worn, full of worm holes from long dead bugs, complete with knots, knot holes, cracks, broken edges, etc., I had a feeling that throwing it out would be a bad idea, and that I might find some use for it down the road. A few months ago, I suspected that there might be some beautiful wood under that super rustic surface, so I sanded a piece down with a belt sander and 80 grit paper. I knew then, that I had something valuable to work with, art-wise, but it took a long time to get it to that point, and it still needed to be sanded with much finer grits before it would look like I wanted it to. So, it went on the back burner again until last month, when I bought a DeWalt 12.5 inch surface planer. It went through the old wood surface like a knife through butter. Just what I wanted. AND, then I employed a technique I saw you use on your art pieces... a stained backing board... which not only holds all the cracked pieces together, but it makes for a nice wall-friendly surface to mount brackets on. So, thank you for that wonderful idea. I just wanted to share with you, and I put up a link to your channel on my FB page, so my friends who are interested in such things can come by and be exposed to your work, ideas, and your incredible artwork! You should have stained the plywood before you glued it onto the pieces of Barnwood, would have turned out a lot better job

Many thanks for that awesome display of fine craftsmanship. I'll be making a similar frame to enclose the rear wheel/fender of a late 1800's Stearns bicycle. Thanks to you I now know how to stabilize the frame material.........

I liked the center piece when you just finished grinding it the first time the best, @ 8:50, I liked the irregular shape. I would have glued or pinned it to a black canvas covered board, and done.

In all it is a wonderful art form, It is a work of Art no doubt but it just misses greatness one and a half to two inches of air, it has become a one sided picture, and as a picture it needs more space to the frame, if there is wire it should show the wire, it would have completed the touch of technicism to bring out its naturalism.

this will wreak havoc on the artist who is also a hoarder, I have a real hard time throwing out stuff, don't throw out the beautiful laurel wood, and if stressed it will grow weird......it is excellent firewood ,very high on the BTU scale
