The name Dracula has been immortalised by the author Bram Stoker in his 1897 novel about the vampire. However, this Dracula is purely fictional. The real Dracula was named Vlad the third and had another nickname for which he was famed, that was Vlad the Impaler. Contrary to popular belief, Vlad wasn't considered a monstrous cruel being in his time, he was a national hero in Romania for his countless deeds of bravery and resilience and is often considered as one of the most important rulers in Wallachian history. His methods, including impalement, were intended to instil fear in the enemy and deter further invasions. Vlad's defiance against a powerful empire demonstrated his willingness to put his life on the line for the freedom and independence of his kingdom.
Vlad Dracula, is a historical figure whose greatness remains a topic of debate among scholars and historians. While he is infamous for his cruel and violent methods of rule, he was also a man of action whose rise from a hostage of the Ottoman Empire to the scourge of the Ottomans cemented his name in history. He was a powerful warrior in his on right as well as a ruler who ruled with an iron fist this is his story.

It's nice to see others who understand that good and evil are not absolutes, only the sum of an individuals actions for or against a cause as determined by those who lost or gained by such actions. In that regard, Vlad is a hero and I agree as an American that we need a man with the courage and fortitude to live and die for his country and people and not use his country and people as sacrificial pawns to grow rich and powerful off of.

Thank you for doing this. :) Because of Bram Stoker’s novel (that we all know has his evil protagonist _heavily_ based on Vlad III), many people still believe the word Dracula really means vampire - and is a derogatory title when the truth is actually the opposite (having a “nickname” linked to dragons was a great honor back then) - and that Vlad was a bloodthirsty monster much like his literary counterpart….when in reality he wasn’t that more brutal and ruthless than his fellow sovereigns, and was loved and hailed as a hero by his people.

@@Aksarallah it seems igonarance is bliss. its a common theme these days. mind you, how can u use present standards to judge past events. a bit of history lessons never hurts. if u do judge historical figures based on today standards, then everyone commited crimes against humanity in the past. omg the stupidity....furthermore, what innocent civilians?!?! u think at that time people had high standard of morality to judge everyone individually???! there were other things far more important then human rights - famine, diseases, survival in general...what innocent civilians?!?!? no one went for killing innocent civilians. collateral casualties yes but from different moral standards. I mean, I dont think centuries ago people cared more about fashion and cars rather then food and family. and finally, Vlad Dracula is a symbol for freedom and justice, passion and national identity, sheer will and focus...death is just the ending of life but life is what matters. these things matter less these days, but hey we can judge because we have the moral ground to do so. and we never moved a finger to earn it. we live on the shoulder of giants...ignorance is bliss indeed

@@austerre You are ignoring the part where people praise him as a christian leader. While literally none of his actions had an ounce of christianity in it. Christians lacked real heroes so they adopt villains like him as a hero and ignore how he burned homeless people and impaled senile and old people cause they were useless. The values I am judging him by are the same values of the religion he claimed to follow, not some modern human rights code written by liberals.

Skanderbeg and Vlad. That ain't no joke, man. Skanderbeg actually lived (and fought) 17 more years than Vlad. Vlad died at 45, Skanderbeg was almost 63. Skanderbeg decapitated many an opponent's head. But he was still the Champion of Christ, Athleta Christi, called on by not one, but Four popes: called by Popes Callixtus III, Pius II, Paul II, and Nicholas V.

Vlad grew up and was friends with Mehmed during his stay as a ward, which is why he was so brazed vs the sultan. He knew him well and challenged the conqueror of Constantinopol. Hamza Pacha was impaled with intent to anger Mehmed, as he was his wife's uncle or something like that. Mehmed hoped him as envoy would change Vlads mind about the tribute & vassalage but it backfired and was captured, also Pacha was one of their tutors in childhood.

Great presentation and artwork. This man fascinates me. Some people hail him as a freedom fighter yet the methods he used to kill his enemies and innocents have to be the worst possible. They go well beyond execution into the worst kind of horrific torture/execution. For him to use and relish impaling people alive and doing it in such a way to keep them alive for as long as possible to extend their suffering and inventing techniques that could be possibly worse shows that Vlad was truly a psychopathic monster. He enjoyed doing it. He has all the traits for it with his history of torturing animals when he was younger. I think he was also the 1st person to use biological weapons. Personally I cannot see him as a heroic figure. There is a good Netflix series about The Ottoman Empire featuring the clash and hatred between Vlad and Mehmed II

I've heard a story that during Vlad's and Radu's captivity in the Ottoman Empire, they were sexually abused as children. It is even shown in the TV Series Vanhelsing, where Vlad was brought to the Sultan and was raped in the presence of soldiers. I mean, that is a very traumatizing experience for anyone and it could have destroyed Vlad's mentality and rendered him incapable for mercy and sympathy. He could've taken the idea of impaling his enemies from that experience.

They were not abused, they were hostages but treated well. Impalement was a punishment practiced by Ottomans, that's where he learned a lot about war and terror.

Fairly well researched. You didn't note that Vlad adopted impalement as a tool because he had been exposed to its widespread use by the Ottomans during the years he and Radu were held hostage. He used it against the Ottomans specifically because they themselves used it in the normal course. Also, sources which assert he used impalement against other enemies are not reliable and there are contrary assertions from the time.

Määääh......a bit to Anglo-Saxon view. He learnt his ways from the Ottomans. He just paid em back with their own coin. With Hungary today wanting to join the Turkish Union we all can see why relying on turkish fanboys might have been a problem for Vlad. The Hungarians backstabbed him many times and are partionally responsibile for the Ottoman succes.

Its a mixed bag some people see him as a hero some people see him as a villain. He did kill a lot of women and children of his own people but it was a different point of history he ruled with an iron fist

I imagine he felt nothing. Just a cold hard logical fact he had settled on.

some sources says that he and his brother were sexually molested while being captive kids at the sultan palace.I imagine that Vlad, was psychological destroyed as a normal human being and only the revenge (spikes thru turks asses) kept him alive and strong. So i think he felt revenge when impalement under his orders were made. But even if he impaled the sultan himself, i doubt that his pain were to go away

I'm not saying he wasn't an honest man but definitely brutal. A little too brutal.

Informative video but I don’t know why people claim this man to be a hero after he would show merciless actions by impaling children and women.

Because that is what it took to put fear into his enemies and diminish their chances of survival… to protect his own people’s women and children.

That's fictional story. Turks always failed to kill or capture Vlad

Let Skanderbeg and Vlad Dracul team up together, as they use to say in The Bronx "fuggedaboutit!"
