Places like Walmart give people the wrong impression of how much a real BMX costs then get price shock when they find out a American made S&M costs way more then $49. Also, just like a Walmart BMX can’t handle the park, Walmart MTB can’t handle most MTB trails.

@Brant_Moore one good thing a Walmart BMX is that it helps you try out BMX and see if you can handle the standing position. Of course, if you are near Rays, you can rent a real BMX for less and find out if BMX is right for you.

Everything he is saying is true. Maintenance is also super important! I suffered from a life-threatening injury when I was 11 thanks to riding a department store bike. Also talk to your local shop if they offer financing if your budget is tight!

I bought my kid a 2017 Wethepeople Nova and it is hi-ten steel.. Zero issues with the frame... For a beginner I think that as long as the bike is from your local bike shop and is a quality name brand. Having sealed bottom bracket, headset and hubs is more important than if the frame is hi-ten or full chromo..

That’s fine though, buy a piece of shit bike for your kid who’s starting to try to do tricks on ramps or otherwise and pay the hospital bill when they break it and themselves at the same time. Got my ex girlfriend a 2017 Fit Nordstrom with all after market parts even had profile cranks.... Only cost $200 full cromo sealed from front to back..... No reason to ride a Mongoose.... ( Unless it's from 95' or earlier)

Look! I have a passion for BMX but let's be real here. First, I didn't get into BMX until I was 13 and I understood that the pricing of an actual BMX can be at least $350 minimum. The truth is that any working class parent wouldn't see the logic of dishing out $350-500 or in some cases $1500 for custom builds when the Walmart BMX are as cheap as $175.

I did a months long research for buying my 2 boys BMX bikes and the first thing i thought about was Walmart. After speaking to the owner of a bmx bike shop we ended up going with 2 Kink bikes, really nice fuckiny bikes.

I’m 12 and ride a mongoose rebel and do wellies bunny hops and ride wit friends all da time on da road and shit and I’m fine but I want a bike that I can sit on while welling so I’m looking towards the jet blocks bmx bike blue camo so if u know any good bikes under $300 dat I can wellie while sitting down wit fat tires (REPLY)

I've been doing cross-country BMX for decades and I actually prefer Pacific / Walmart cycles. They might not be the best thing for the skate park but they seem to have just the right weight for going long distances. I've hit 13 ft flat lander jumps on a Mongoose Rebel and it felt great. Ditch the scary plastic rims of course but other than that, they seem to be great for cross-country and BMX slopestyle.

Being at a shop myself if cost is the main issue with parents, I do at least recommend a check over with a box store bike build. We want the kids to be safe. Usually parents follow through with that if they can’t make a bike shop bike purchase.

Seems like the "real" bmx bikes in the $250-350 range are mostly only a half a step above the better walmart type bikes... unsealed bearings, american loose ball BB, old school headset style, etc... once u get in the $350-400 mark($300-350 on sale or sometimes for last year's model) I am seeing more of the quality, bit even then, some bikes at that price range dont always have the same kind of parts... SOOOO many bikes, hard to shop for... you should make a video featuring a few budget bikes, or a few mid level choices, and talk about why you think people might consider those... Thanks again for all the info you put out on your channel...it has been helpful... really thinking I might order 2 bikes, let the kid ride them and then choose his, amd I can loose some weight peddaling the other one around...

I wouldn’t necessarily call them Walmart bikes. They are not made to be the absolute cheapest possible bike that can be made the same way bikes from Walmart are. They just have very negative reputations within BMX

To be honest stuff like the K.O. and Team were actually decent bikes to start out on because while being Walmart bikes they were more like an entry level complete lose ball 3pc, 1 1/8th forks and wellgo pedals. They were actually decent to start out on and my team lasted about a month on the trails, and then I got my first 'real' bike a 2004 Eastern Sequence then I started replacing stuff as it broke, then it got stolen. Anyways, good video man. People don't realize these companies like Wal-mart, and Target are looking to make the cheapest thing for the masses and the masses will never be putting their bikes through what actually riding BMX entails. To me it's really a safety thing you're going to get hurt riding BMX on a bike from Wal-Mart

Nice and informative video. I have 1 question about why do all the bike these days look all the same with different names on them? Back in the day you could just look at a bike and know what company the bike was from. Like the gt bike and haro bike for example.

BMX has kind of figured out what works and they say that the industry is doing poorly, so there's less money to experiment with things that aren't a sure bet. Check out the Nowear BMX frame if you haven't seen it. There's definitely still a few companies doing different frames

The hilarious thing about walmart bikes is that half of them are made by either Hyper or Mongoose. Both companies make legit high end bikes and still participate in selling crap bikes to kids anyway. In the mid 90s I actually raced a Mongoose. LOL.

It’s good business and would be awesome if a bigger name BMX company would take advantage of it. Selling to people on every single level possible including those just buying a bike from Walmart for a 10 year old to ride in the driveway is just another way to get BMX out there to that many more people. There would have to be a way to connect the bikes in Walmart to a bike shop, but it would probably do more than what mongoose or hyper are doing right now.

Hi I find your channel very informative. Thanks for the videos. I'm totally new and researching this week for a bike for my almost 10 years old son who is 51". We are right now down to two that he feels comfy to sit on, went with your suggestions to support local. Not sure if you can give us some feedbacks on them. Sunday primer 18" 2021 $359.99, or kink kicker 18" 2022 $399.99. Which one would you choose between the two. Thanks for the tips! How about entry level bikes like the GT slammer or a $300 kink bike? Any advice on a bike for a 6' tall person?

I know this from experience tried a trick I failed and cut my knees pretty bad started to bleed but wasn't a Walmart bike tho something maybe a little worse a kmart bike 😂

Brant, grew up in Trumbull county riding Section 8 back before it flooded and shut down. Anyway, just got my first bike after 14 years of not riding. I’ll be back in Ohio for the 4th of July and I’m looking for somewhere to ride. I have no idea what public parks are still around. If you could point me in the right direction, that would be awesome.

@Brant_Moore I guess anywhere around Akron, CLE, or Y-town. I used to ride the 2 Akron parks, Athens, and New Philly; as far as outside places go. I know Rays is closed for the seasons, and I’m assuming Chenga in Brookepark is still open. I’ll be up there for a couple weeks so I’ll have some time to hit my old spots from back in the day, haha.

Akron's concrete park is still there, as well as Athens and new philly. Theres not much near youngstown but the Akron area has a ton. Medina, Wadsworth, Canal Fulton, Brecksville, North Royalton. And theres just as many near Cleveland. If you have an iphone theres an app called Ramp Map that shows most of them. My local is Wooster skatepark and I have Apple Creek Trails 10 minutes away

all you need to do is tighten everything up and removed parts that arent needed and you should have a good bike. also change out the rims on the tires so they dont wop as easy

I’m about to watch this video , before this starts who are you to judge what’s a bmx bike ? I had a 50 dollar pawn shop bike and hit plants of wood on cinder blocks and looked up to evil knievel , then I got a huffy mj12 after seeing x games on tv and that was 1998 , if your jumping a bike of any type trying to do tricks , that’s bmx as f***

Hey can you do a video on stance? ... I'm a skateboarder of 15years and I skate goofy foot.... I bike with my right foot forward not sure if that's called goofy as well? If I do a trick with my left foot forward is that switch? Is opo the same as switch?.... I haven't seen any videos that explain stance terminology (fakie switch nollie opposite etc.)

Hey bud, regular and goofy is a little different on BMX, and can get kinda complicated. Given that you’re right foot forward, if your preferred turning direction is to the left, effectively a backside air/spine, then you’re regular footed. If you prefer to turn right (frontside), then you’re goofy. You should also have a preferred grind side; in your case your “regular” side is the right, and opposite would be left. If you prefer the left, then you run goofy pegs. The opposite is true for left foot forward. A lot of people use opposite and switch interchangeably; but doing a trick left foot forward is definitely switch. Throwing your bars in your unnatural direction would be a switch barspin, whilst me airing to the right is switch/opposite. I hope some of this made a little sense

Justin Roberts left foot forward would be switch/switch footed, whilst throwing it with your other hand would be switch/opposite. Terminology gets messy and varies depending on who you talk to. Some people would say left foot forward is switch, whilst throwing with your other hand is opposite. Others will say left foot forward is switch footed and throwing with your other hand is switch.

If it’s going to be used to just ride around the neighborhood and never leave the ground or have tricks tried on it, that will be fine. If tricks are going to be tried and it will be ridden at the skatepark, I could never recommend it.

So I don’t have a Walmart bike but it’s from dicks so it’s pretty close but I wanted to know if I could switch the headset cuz the headset I have now is really crappy and I just want a new one.

@@Brant_Moore So good news. I traded my old dicks bike for an se everyday bmx along with some cash and a layaway. But for some reason I feel like I made a bad decision. I think it’s normal but it just doesn’t feel right. But, oh well.
