Just picked it up today, and also bought the ram upgrade. Went with a single 16gb stick, to make it 24gb total. Eventually going to buy a samsung drive, and another 16gb stick of ram. Solid budget laptop to get me through school, with some light gaming on the side. Dont need it for the gaming aspect, but love that it has that capability.
8 gigs DDR 5 simply just isn't enough I have a laptop that came with an i5 and a 3060 but only 8 gigs of ddr5 ended up buying a 32 gig kit made a world of difference
Not at all crapping on your idea but for about $600 usd you can get the same performance with a much bigger upgrade path with a desktop, if it’s gotta be portable that’s another thing tho
@@viktorhager5924 I already have a desktop, but was looking for a laptop for school. This is a great option, I just need to wait to see what my classes call for. I may just get a macbook though, the m3 is looking hella tempting rn.
Bought one for $599, $218 for 32gig ram, 1TB SSD from BB. Downloaded HP recovery software. Installed upgrades, ran HP recovery software. For just over $800, little time, this laptop will get the job done across many aspects.
I thought it looked like a bargain with the specs for 599. Ended up buying and the build quality is great too. All I added was an equal to OEM spec 8gb RAM stick for 23 bucks on amazon and this thing is an absolute beast for the money and portability.
Just bought mine. Installed an additional 16gigs of ram for $35 before I even turned it on. I'll be taking it to classes and will be helpful for engineering programs and casual/light gaming. I have a fully spec'd out pc for real games.
Bro thats literally what im getting it for haha, i have a year before i go to university so im getting this then saving up for a desktop. What engineering you going into?
For $599, it's tough to find a laptop that outperforms this one overall, especially considering the GPU. You might find cheaper models, but they’ll likely compromise on either: Graphics (only integrated GPUs). Performance (U-series processors or slower RAM). Definitely upgrade the RAM. I just bought this one from Amazon for $26: Crucial RAM 8GB DDR5 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory CT8G56C46S5. I mainly needed a laptop for college but wanted one that could do a little bit of everything which is why I chose this one. If you're looking for laptops in this price range, I would definitely consider this one with the added RAM :)
some caveats are tolerable(upgradeability) but a 40 series laptop for a entry level performance expectations is a modest dabble in current gen and modest pricing makes it happen great stuff toastybros.
There's someone selling a Victus desktop near me with a 12th gen i3, 1660ti, 16gb ram, 500gb ssd, and 2tb hdd for $180. Tempted to offer 150 and replace my Plex PC with it
I recently got a Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3, similar specs but with 16GB RAM. Paid extra to add 1TB additional SSD. I'm super happy. IMO, that's the KING of budget laptops.
@mikejames6588 RAM stores tasks and information that need to be used quickly. You need at least 16GB for intensive tasks, such as gaming. The CPU and GPU can be fantastic, but you'll get stutters, hitching, long load times and greatly reduced performance with 8GB of RAM. Please actually look into how a computer works before commenting something so profoundly ignorant next time.
@@mikejames6588no such thing as cpu ram and without enough ram you can’t run a game at all and with to Little or not enough you can’t get optimal performance much less max Perfect so atleast 16gb of ram should be in a gaming laptop of this price and performance range
Absolutely amazing laptop. Got 16GB of RAM on this baby and a 1TB SSD and not once has it not been able to run anything I've thrown at it. Get 16GB of RAM and change the SSD, and you got yourself an amazing gaming laptop!
RU-vid must be stocking me. I bought this laptop this morning, then this video got recommended 😂. Its all in all a decent laptop. As soon as i got it i did a fresh windows install and replaced the ram with 2x16gb sticks. It made such a big difference.
@@Sinatra2200 yeah man, I bought a kit of 32GB ram (2 sticks of 16GB). I just took the factory ram out and put in the new sticks. You just install them the way the toasty bros did in the video. Task manager did show 32GB.
@@cidhernandez1149 I got the kit from Silicon Power. It was the cheapest 5600mhz kit I could find. I've purchased many products from them in the past and never had any issues with them. Just make sure the ram you get is DDR5 SODIMM. Other than that, manufacturer doesn't really matter.
I just completed my RAM upgrade a few minutes ago. Here are my thoughts: 1) There's no way I could've unhinged the plastic prongs without my new prying tool. I also had used the mini screwdriver to hold each corner up to be sure they wouldn't click back into place, but I was just nervous. I suggest getting the prying tool rather than the mini guitar pick ones because the leverage is so much better and it's around the same price as the 10 packs of picks. 2) When inputting the RAM sticks, insert at a diagonal and gently push down until it clicks into place. I got two 16 GB sticks to be sure 100% they are compatible (anyone want my extra stick from the build lol). I didn't insert the second one at a diagonal before pushing down, so it didn't click into place. Removing and reinserting was a hassle. 3) Unless you are also replacing the SSD, there's no setup once you turn it on. I'm pretty happy with my purchase, I'll be using this for college so I'm glad everything worked out. I choose 32 GB of RAM to be 100% sure there's no issues in the future, but I don't see the need to increase HD space with cloud storage. I'll probably only play a few games at a time on here anyway, so I don't mind reinstalling games.
friendly reminder that the performance hit using single channel memory on ddr5 is minimal compared to ddr4 due to increased bandwidth of ddr5. problems seen in this video are almost certainly just capacity related, not single vs dual channel. a single 16gb stick of ddr5 should have very similar performance as two 8gb sticks of similar speed, where with ddr4 you might very well see a bigger hit to framerate using single channel config - especially with those 1% lows.
DDR5 divides its bandwidth between 2 channels on individual memory sticks. A single stick of DDR5 is dual channel. 2 sticks of DDR5 is a quad channel configuration. So I agree, the issue is most likely capacity and not as much a memory bandwidth issue.
@@baoquoc3710 the best commonly-available ddr4 kits had cas latency 14 or so, as that's what it is in my system currently. lowest commonly available cas latency on ddr5 is 30. for example, ddr4 3200 cl14 & ddr5 6000 cl30.
Its not $600, its $799, and discounted its $599. With tax youre paying almost $1000 at msrp and almost $800 with a discount. For the same price you can literally build a desktop with RTX. Gaming laptops are always a scam because you are paying for half the power of a desktop at the same price as one. If all you wanna do is play warzone or minecraft just get an HP or Acer office laptop with a later i5 or i3 and upgrade the ram. It will cost like $400 but with the same performance. If you actually want a true gaming laptop you can just go ahead and forget about the word "budget" and expect to pay like $2500.
They had the refurbed HP Victus 16-r0073cl (i7-13700HX, 32GB DDR5-4800 RAM, 8GB 4060, 1 TB SSD) for $700 a month or so ago. Picked one up, is pretty good. Just a backup/travel set up and for friends when they come over.
@@Akondom If it comes with a warranty maybe, but used laptops would be a tough buy. Too many chances for problems and everything is soldered to the board except for RAM and storage. As long as it is properly refurbished and they didnt just clean out someones old overheating laptop.
@@stephenhood2948 This warranty thing hits hard ESPECIALLY with where Intel sits right now. I don't know how many of their mobile SKUs are at risk of the current issues their 13th and 14th gen chips are currently experiencing, but I'd HATE to pick up a used laptop and then suddenly instability hits and I can't do anything about it.
I can't find any variant with 8gb, I bought one for $965 a week ago and all of the stores I have been to has stocks comes with 16gb as standard and can get up to RTX 4060, 8gb really just isn't enough. I don't buy electronics devices from Walmart, because what they have are all budget versions.
I got last year's model from Micro Center for $750, which came with a 1920 x 1080 144Hz IPS display, AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS, RTX 3050 6GB, 16GB DDR5 5600 MT/s, 512GB Gen 4 NVMe; I have since upgraded it with a 2TB Samsung 980 Pro, Crucial 32GB DDR5 5600 MT/s, and swapped out that shitty Mediatek WiFi card for an Intel one. Mostly use it as a portable alternative to my desktop while I use an M1 MacBook Pro for college and casual tasks.
I just got a nitro 15 with i5 13th Gen and 4050 16gb ram and 512nvme. I got this free because my buddy's daughter who got for college didn't want it. 😮 The fans loud as hell in use. My old laptop is an Asus tuf with 1650 and 8gb ram. That 8gb ram was holding it back but I definitely needed to upgrade off the 1650.
@@Gateastrologykc Yeah has separate fan control for cou and the GPU which I thought was weird, the things a jet when cranked auto gaming lol. I'm starting to like it a lot more. Wish it was the 4060 on instead ...
We got the same specs "16 gb" of ddr at the Eastern Europe for - "1146 $ USD". Twice higher than from "WalMart". This is why I will pick "GPD Win Max2" or "OneXplayer X1"
Can't find this one on Walmart's website now. I'm seeing versions with anywhere from 16-64 GB of RAM, but at a much higher price. Looks like I missed out on that deal, oh well. 🤷♂
I got an Hp Omen with Ryzen 5 and an Rtx 3060 couple years ago. Best Laptop i ever had. I never ever gonna buy a different brand !!! Hp has the best Laptops if it comes to performance/price ratio.
@@thebee2685 there is a reason Victus is the budget series and Omen is the premium series .. that doesn't mean Victus is a bad device, Omen has better build quality, better cooling system. Well it should be obvious that the premium series should have something better to be called premium.
This laptop’s fan noise is a lil too noisy, but that’s on “performance mode” you can change that on the Omen Gaming Hub, overall is a great laptop but it does require a mandatory RAM Upgrade and probably a SSD upgrade but that’s optional imo
@@thezeta9756 Dude, you bought a gaming laptop. It's a high performance laptop. It's going to generate heat. People who complain about fan noise in a compact device that generates a lot of heat are not too bright. XD

Alright Toasty Bros I bought a Victus PC because you told me last year at a great price and it did not disappoint, now I bought this laptop just because it is a pretty good deal. Thank you!

HP charges a fortune for RAM GB upgrades, they don't care what you or anyone else recommends. One, 512 GB drive on a gaming laptop is comical, Warzone is around a 175GB download. 3 or 4 games and your maxed out. It's not a terrible price. New laptops CPU's are about to be released. These will become less sought after soon.
Man I feel like 1TB SSD should be minimum for pcs now I got a 1,000$ desktop and it only came with 512Gb SSD and I’m only able to have 2 games downloaded
@@passivevii4052 Just make sure the laptop has replaceable RAM and a second NVME slot and it should be fine for now. Save some money now and upgrade later.
You have to disconnect the battery to avoid damaging any components, I will recommend that and also wearing some rubber gloves just in case, you don’t want to damage your laptop by accident, and yes you should this for any type of hardware upgrade
@@Keekee1253 the battery is a big ass thing in the bottom, it occupies easily 1/4 of the laptop, and you should see a white plastic thingy with multiple color cables coming out there, you should take the white plastic thingy DO NOT TOUCH THE CABLES, be gentle with it or you can break the pins, once you do that the battery should be disconnected, in my personal experience is pretty easy to re-plug the battery, if you can’t then screw the battery out and plug the cables then put all the battery screws back in their places and that’s all, hope this helps!
@@Keekee1253 if you didn’t understand you can search for other videos upgrading the HP Victus, most of them do not use this model but they use the old one, it’s the same thing tho the layout has slight changes but it should help you visualize better how to unplug the battery, hope this helps and don’t forget to use rubber gloves to prevent any type of accident!
Claiming you have to reinstall Windows to swap an SSD is silly. A $9 NVME external enclosure and CloneZilla will make duplicating that SSD without reinstalling Windows a breeze. (You can also use Acronis Free with WD drives, Samsung "MaGiCiAn" for their derives, etc.)
i bought this laptop on prime day at walmart its a great gaming laptop i have a 2nd stick of ram coming it was only 45 bucks which puts it next to msi and asus laptops that either have a 3050 or 2050 for higher price to entry
I don’t know if I’m in the minority here but could you make a video showing how to change out the SSD and how to reinstall windows on that computer? Because only 512 GB ain’t enough for my games😂
It's pretty simple actually, before doing anything, keep a bootable operating system ready ( pendrive ) , Remove the back panel, swap the SSD , close the back panel, install the pendrive , click the boot button, immediately spam click F9 , you should see it asking to select boot device, select the pendrive, click enter , tats all , install the windows . ( P.S. I would recommend having an internet connection via LAN would be really helpful since you won't have wifi drivers installed, incase you don't have access to LAN, just use your mobiles internet with USB tethering, or you can have wifi drivers downloaded into a pendrive, whichever you prefer , once your PC is connected to internet, you won't have any driver issues since it will download and install everything automatically)
You guys failed at optimal ramupgrade. Orginal stick was running at 5600mhz and after you upgrade is nkw clocked at 4800mhz. You need to log in to bios to adjust this. Please append you video showing to going to bios and ensure correct ram speeds.
They only put single channel memory in this, I'm wondering if you could upgrade all the RAM to 16 gig dual channel? It would make a huge difference wouldn't it?it would make a huge difference wouldn't it?
Somebody said you have to unplug the battery, lol, when changing ram. Im very lost? Did yall do that in the video since i didn't see it. I dont wanna mess up the pc. I also may buy the laptop today, then get ram later 😅.
Like I said before, unplugging the battery is something you must do before any hardware replacement/upgrade, looks like they (the bros) didn’t do it but you don’t want to cause any damage to the motherboard, and I’m my testings 8 GB Ram was enough to run most of the games at pretty decent FPS ofc it’s a bottleneck but HP did a great job optimizing the laptop, trust me the RAM upgrade it’s game changing, good luck!
Always best to disconnect the battery when doing any work inside a laptop. On HP laptops you may find BIOS settings reset to default if you do this but that's no big deal. Be careful with the battery connector, wiggle it a little if it's hard to disconnect.
I've never unplugged a battery or taken it out during an upgrade. Never had any issues. Not sure who came up with that myth. And I've been an IT for over 20 years.
@@drummer7557 It's not a myth. If the battery is connected you have circuits that are active, of course if you're careful you can avoid any issue but just consider the likelihood of making a mistake and also an inexperienced person doing this work. Unplugging is a 2 second process and mitigates a whole lot of risks.
I've basically given up suggesting people buy laptops if they don't have 16GB of RAM if they intend to do any gaming. Purely because it's getting to where SOME games struggle without it. Even if the laptop CAN be upgraded, a lot of people just aren't willing to deal with it. Personally, this would 100% be a laptop I would grab for personal use because I don't mind getting in and doing an upgrade. The absolute no go for me though is the ram being soldered to the board and you can't upgrade it. ESPECIALLY if it's supposed to be a gaming machine, but any machine really. I'm not out to buy a system that will turn into a paperweight within the next 2 years. And in many cases 8GB of RAM is the bare minimum I think you can use, but it only JUST holds up to me.
@@Fallenn Yea. I'm not saying that THIS laptop has soldered RAM, only that it BEING soldered has become an instant no buy for me. Because it's getting harder and harder for laptops to maintain their usability, but being able to upgrade RAM is one thing that CAN help to keep them usable as their hardware starts to age. If you see in the middle of my comment I specifically say that I'm okay opening a laptop to upgrade it, so this WOULD be a laptop I would pick up because I can get in and do so.
I had a legion 5 with 100% srgb, this HP has better features but its screen is 62.5% srgb, I hope it is not so unpleasant to look at. I already ordered my purchase.
Hey I’m looking at buying a gaming laptop got $800 to $1000 to spend what do you recommend should I buy this one and do the ram upgrade or is there something better
Is this a better deal then the one you guys got from best buy ? The bestbuy one is 439 right now. So it's a good bit cheaper. I don't play anything major, just GTA , farm sim, and some racing gemes
I bought this the day it went on sale on July 9. I enjoy it even though I know nothing about gaming on PC. But I couldn't pass up on that price. I was looking to buy a Lenovo LOQ but couldn't find one for under $700. My biggest problem is the battery is atrocious. Only lasting 1 hour 45 mins before I need to plug in. And I can't change the integrated graphics to the RTX 4050 through the Omen gaming Hub. The feature was missing from talking to others in reddit about my issue. The frames are okay but I would really like to use dlss in Fortnite but I can't get more then 140 fps.
My biggest question is can this work with me being a console streamer? I just need something that i can run overlays on my stream with until I can invest in a PC. Also possibly show youtube videos and other streams while streaming.
Im pretty sure most laptops have the OS linked to the hardware, just link the digital license to your Microsoft account, once you finish all the storage/OS upgrades/mods you want then use a bootable USB Flash Drive and re-install windows, once you long in into your Microsoft account windows should be activated, note that you have to create the bootable flash drive & link/register your Microsoft account & device (if is not already) to the windows digital license, if it doesn’t say “digital license” and instead is asking for a key, then the key should be in the laptop box, or you can download some softwares that allow you to see your product key 👍 I tested this before and it works just fine
The 7.3GB of RAM showing leads me to believe they derped the UEFI/BIOS config of the iGPU and gave it 768? 512? MB of RAM when it should only be allocated something like 32-64 MB. They've set it up in a way that the iGPU effectively wastes the already underwhelming amount of RAM all the time.
