As a child I watched the TV show "Little House on the Prairie". When I realized it was based on a true story, I read the books. I still read Laura's books today. I hope you enjoy this peek into the museum.
I totally agree! As a teacher and history buff I want this to continue. History is important and I think we have forgotten what it is really all about.
Walnut Grove is like Disney World for me. As a child I enjoyed reading Laura Ingalls’ books as well as watching Little House on the Prairie. Will visit this museum with my family next year. Thanks for this video.

HI.. I began reading the Little House books when I was 6 years old back in 1960. Laura had died 3 years prior so I was despondent I'd never get to meet her. I dragged my poor husband to Pepin, Wisconsin, Walnut Grove and the farm where the sod house had been, to De Smet, SD, to Manchester, SD before a tornado totally destroyed it, and to Mansfield, MO Rocky Ridge Farm. Laura Ingalls Wilder and her books are responsible for me loving to read.
I envy you, Heidi! I want to go to all her homes. When we were in Walnut Grove, it was on a business trip for my husband. We didn't have time to go to Wisconsin or South Dakota. We were so close to De Smet but time didn't allow. We go camping in a town in MO that is close to Mansfield. Next year, I will go there. I love Laura's books and share them with everybody! I think my friends are getting tired of me saying, "Oh, I was reading about..." LOL! I am now on "These happy golden years". I love reading of the neighbor who borrowed everything but the hog to butcher :)
On my 20th birthday, my husband asked what I wanted for my birthday present. I'd seen the set of the original Little House books at the book store, with illustrations by Garth Williams. If I remember correctly the entire set only cost about $20. Guess what I got for my birthday? :) Here I am *coughs* 43 years later and I still have and cherish that set of books. We have other things in common. I, too, am a cat lover. When we were in De Smet, we found that Silver Lake had been drained earlier in the 20th century because being a shallow and marshy area, it was a health hazard (mosquitos). I do so hope you'll get the opportunity to visit the other homes of the Ingalls and Ingalls-Wilders. Pepin is a truly scenic area and not so far away are the bluffs on the Mississippi River on the Minnesota side. Breathtaking. The last trip we'd done, we had two weeks of vacation and were driving to Yellowstone National Park anyway. So I urged the stops in Pepin (2nd visit), Walnut Grove and the farm where the sod house has been, De Smet and Manchester. Why not? It was on the way and so interesting! Perhaps you can talk your husband into such a trip
I recently stumbled across another video where they were in independence showing that museum. I believe I read correctly, that in the books the family only stayed in Walnut Grove a couple of years. I actually grew up in this area myself. I am from the town of wabasso. We were not established until about 1900 and Walnut Grove was established in 1874. I was to this museum as a child myself. If I remember correctly, we got to go out to the actual farm site where the house would have been. As well as being at the museum. I remember enjoying the TV show as a kid even though it was in syndication. A lot of the towns that are mentioned in the show I grew up near and it was so fun for me to hear the towns. Again, my town is never mentioned because we were established later.
Great video! In 2000 I was at this museum as a child and hardly remember it. Thank you for posting this video, brought back some memories. I’m a history lover myself and like seeing things like this preserved for future generations. The news articles of the family from back in the day truly makes them a reality instead of just characters in a beloved book series.

I''m little house fan from Malaysia..40 years ago I watched lhotp with family esp. my dad..dad just passed away, about a month before the series are back on TV jul18. I just wish walnut grove the time of ingalls will be revived & fans across the world can visit.. The walnut community as portrayed on TV esp the ingalls bring a lot of good values in the modern lives of our growing up children & we as parents..the beautiful simple life surrounded by nature & love that money just cant buy.

I am 54 yrs old and still will enjoy all of the repeats. What a blessing to have the chance to actually go to and see the museum! I had gone to a rehab center in 1988 and can remember the counselor asking us what time period would you pick to live in . Well..that was a no brainer to me it was most certainly the pioneer days. I have always wanted to live back then too. I think a part of what I do know is due to loving that time period. I would love to shut the power off and live without for a week, a month. Rod just won't work with me on that. :) Glad you enjoyed the video series. I was thrilled to be able to visit those places.
I love history. And I to get chills when I'm near something that had to with history. Especially something that's years old or I'm in an area where I know a battle or major event took place.
The metal plates that you were talking about that make the paper are called Tin Types. My father worked at a news paper for 43 years and worked with tin types, I used to watch him. Thanks, this was very cool to see. Little House, was always one of my favorite stories ever.

Thx so much! I love history and walking in the footsteps of prior generations. I started reading little house books in the 50’s. We have relatives in MN and took our kids to Walnut Grove and saw the living pageant in the evening. It was drizzling and the kids were so worried they’d cancel the play but they didn’t and they haven’t forgotten it. We were in the museum but I don’t remember much. Do remember Plum creek. On a later trip my husband and I visited De Smet. We still want to go to Rock Ridge.

Just think, this Father took his Wife & 3 young girls from Pepin WS, to Independence, KS around Indian Territory for Farmers to claim land to start harvesting crops. The Ingalls were in the wrong area & got kicked off the land. Therefore the Ingalls family moved onward to Walnut Grove, MN. Stayed there for several yrs. Then they moved onward to DeSmit, SD for C Ingalls to manage a Hotel for a while. Later the Family being home sick, the Ingalls family moved bk to Walnut Grove, MN. That is where Laura 1st met Almanzo Wilder! There after, once she was of age her & Almanzo were married. Laura & Almanzo moved to different states. Finally making their final home in Missouri, their home & land was called Rocky Ridge Farm.
LOL! I get the texture thing! My Dad had an old record player from the 1800's. It was made of wood and had a nasty smell. I loved it but hated that smell. Thanks for watching!
what a wonderful time in history and it also very interesting too . i always love history beacuse i like learning about it when i was in school and my favorite subject in school was history
That would be wonderful. And “the waltons” there were so many lessons in these shows.a lot of parents don’t teach these lessons because they don’t know how!
anybody notice on the list of supplies needed for a long wagon journey that a 1/2 bushel of cornmeal is listed twice ( once as cornmeal and once as Corn Meal.

I grew up watching Michael Landon on little house...it's a shame that good wholesome tv like this is no longer on..I would of loved to live back in that time period..from what I am reading Mary never married....is that true

Lol, they never missed Walmart because it was never introduced to them. They knew nothing about it, therefore they never got the chance to miss it, much less live without it, lol! Life was harder back then but so much simpler. Folks could enjoy life, whereas nowadays, we're missing out on life because we're too busy working. It's sad because life is passing us by, we don't actually ENJOY living it, therefore, our quality of life has deteriorated to work, work, work. 😢
I want to! We camp at Silver Arrow Campground in MO. It is maybe 50 miles from Mansfield. I will try to make a video next summer of that area. Thank you.
Laura's father Charles was born on 1/10//1836 in Cuba, NY and passed on 6/8/1902. His wife, Laura's mother, lived long past him. She was born on 12/12/1839 and passed on 4/20/1924. As I am reading more on Laura's live, I read how she mourned her mother's death. She hadn't seen her in 20 or more years. Both died in De Smet, SD and I believe they are both buried there. I am not an "expert" on the family. I had to look this up on google.
Oh one more thing. :) Many people see the word 'slough' in the books. It is pronounced 'slew'. Any other pronunciation proclaims that you aren't a local...lol!
