Walnut Ink Mixing Ratio

I get asked about the walnut ink crystals that I use quite often, and have never actually used tools to measure the mix's ratio, so I decided to record a video walking through that process.
There is a lot of room for error when it comes to mixing walnut crystals, so don't get stuck thinking of it as an exact science.

I would have placed the jar on a scale, zeroed it out, added the water - reported in grams - zeroed it out again, added the crystals, and given the final ratio in grams. BUT, your video has inspired me to get a MrMGWard spooned oblique holder. :-)

You definitely could, but honestly that's waaaaay too much for for walnut mixing. You're going to be topping up the jar with water/crystals as you use it. Trying to always maintain an exact ratio would be tedious and annoying lol

Awesome tips! So you never feel like you need to put some gum Arabic?

You can always try adding a bit of industrial grade disinfectant to keep the ink fungus-free but the acidity of the crystals should keep all of the microorganisms at bay.

Not a bad idea for some inks. I've never had a jar of crystal walnut go moldy though, so I never really worry about it.

I should try that for inks that I don't use as often, like putting them in a "storage mode" heh

My new jar of walnut crystals says to use hot water. I Used their ratio, which was a teaspoon to a half cup of hot water, only I did a half teaspoon to a quarter cup, and it's really thin.

Hot water definitely dissolves the crystals quicker. That's the beauty of Walnut. you can mix it as light or as dark as you like.

I also do it by feel. As long as it flows well, I don't care about color too much. Sometimes I leave my jar opened and it evaporates. I just add water until it feels about right. 🤷

Yup, that's the best way I think. But I get asked about the specific ratio so much, that I figured I'd make it official 😅

@@MrMGWard you meant raceo? 🤣🤣🤣 I always try to use ratio as a verb in my reports, like "X is ratioed by a factor of 3". Spell check always give me a hard time. So I have to swap that with "scaled".

@@gordonhall9943 hahaha I never realized that when I say ratio sometimes it comes out as raceo. I noticed it when editing the video. Lol

Pro tip: dont sit in front of an open window with the crystals in your measuring spoon. 4tbsp of water= 2 fluid ounces to 2.5 to 3 teaspoons of crystals. I prefer a dark consistency in color.

@@MrMGWard not especially. My desk is in front of the main window in our living room. It used to be my moms kitchen table. It makes a good work space.
