Walt Disney's "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" Season 2 Ep 7 (Intro and Washington Irving segment only)

From Season 2 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 7: The Legend of Sleepy Hollow which aired on October 26th, 1955. Animation is used to provide a brief biographical look at Washington Irving, who grew up in the Hudson River region of New York State. Of all his stories, Walt feels The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is the most famous. In this version (likely the airing on October 31st, 1965) we have Walt's lead-in, the Washington Irving featurette and a very funny Walt lead-out! Edited due to copyright restriction is Sleepy Hollow segment, which can be seen on Disney+, but I did leave in the alternate ending exclusive to this episode!
Note: as much as I’d love to include Ichabod (are they shovels or are they feet!) Disney and RU-vid will not allow me to upload the entire animated segment for others to watch for free. Please purchase the The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad on disc or subscribe to Disney+ to watch it. If I continually attempt to upload copyrighted material RU-vid will shut the channel down and thousands of us will be deprived of the already uploaded treasures that are on this channel!

Old Man: You know they say the whole valley's haunted by the ghost of a Hessian soldier whose head was carried away by a cannonball at White Plains. Some say he's an omen of death, others that he drives a carrage in which he traps the souls of those who are going to die. And others say he comes riding through here every night searching for his lost head Why I've lived here all my life and I've seen him riding through here a hundred times. Irving: Wow what did you do? Old Man: Screamed like a little girl, ran like lightning, and spent the last twenty years hiding under my bed crying my eyes out

Every Sunday night the family got together and watched “The Wonderful World of Disney” followed by “Daniel Boone”. That was in the 1960s. Wonderful memories. I was always so pleased to know that Walt Disney and I both had December 5th birthdays, I adored him. I can’t believe what has happened to the Disney company today. Sad. But I was lucky enough to have these old memories.

When I was a kid, everyone gathered around the tv to watch 'The Wonderful World of Disney'. It was the highlight of the week, well that and Saturday cartoons, and a great way to get ready for the school week. I never tired of those shows. It's really sad that kids today no longer have shows like this that had shows about bravery and the hero's journey, the importance of family.

Disney himself was nothing like the Evangelicals of today, he had no time for church or religion. The anti-"woke" fascists who attack Disney today would have Walt's contempt.

Gotta love Disney's old teams of animators who did everything by hand up until Toy Story uncorked the CGI genie for Disney. The old animators put time, effort, and care into every line drawn back then.
@michaelverbakel7632
@michaelverbakel7632 9 месяцев назад
At least I am not the only who feels that animation was forever destroyed when hand drawn animation was replaced with computer graphic imaging. Hand drawn animation took time, care, a lot of love, more human and more effective. Computer graphic imaging animation feels cold, phony, artificial and doesn't even feel like the characters in CGI have any human characteristics which you could see and feel with hand drawn animation.
@Crisofora_
@Crisofora_ 9 месяцев назад
I prefer old animation but CGI sculpting isn't easier, that's not the deal with why traditional animation looks better. It's actually a problem of texture and movement, CGI will never have the "fingerprint" of the illustrator. Traditional animation has the imprint of the strokes over analogue materials. It has a texture you could feel through the screen, illustrations had actual layers you felt you could dive your hands into, and cameras gave off this granulated look in harmony with actual "in place" lightning, which gave an overall feeling of warmth, like touching wood. Unfortunately, plain crystal screens from our phones will never imitate the feeling of touching wood or paper, no matter how many textured screen protectors you make. That's basically the problem. CGI requires just the same effort and understanding of techniques and physics as tradicional animation, but it will never imitate texture as reality does. Besides, traditional animators had one project at the time and were expected to take a prudent time to do the job. Now CGI animators are being exploited. But my point is, both styles require skilled people to the same degree.

@BillBird2111
@BillBird2111 9 месяцев назад
I wouldn't say "destroyed." A better term is "lost their way." They can find the right path again. In the 1970's, Disney produced a bunch of films that flopped. BADLY. The Number One fantasy film producer in America had lost its ability to produce a good movie. Nothing lasts forever. It would take another decade or two before Disney finally found its mojo again. They started producing hit after hit after hit. Now, the company has hit the brick wall of wokeness. This won't last. It will take time, but Disney will be back because of RU-vid providers like Keeping Walt in Disney. They recall a better time. They serve as a reminder of what was once great, and can be great again.

Disney never did anything for money, but frequently risked much financially to materialize his vision. He actually borrowed what he required to complete _20,000 Leagues,_ because he wanted the squid battle re-filmed after he spent thousands on it. He believed in what he did, did it well, inspired his people to do better than even they believed they could, and our childhoods were greatly enriched because of it. His successors were seldom worthy of his legacy. Especially now.

This was in my recommended feed early this morning. I thoroughly enjoy these kinds of meandering visits in history. In this case it's two different periods in one! A look at early America through the lense of the 1950s. It also reminded me that i have trio of Irving's books, two were printed in 1903 and one (the Sketchbook) in 1908. Inside the cover is the name Greta Blossom, written in pencil along with some other notes. Chapters to be finished, definitions of words, page numbers. There's also a scrap of paper so old that it's turned brown and is as brittle as a butterfly wing. She also scrawled some notes on it, everything in cursive and about as sloppy as you would expect from a child (only slightly better than my own current handwriting 😅) I'm so disappointed in people today because they don't appreciate these tiny scraps of humanity. Greta wrote no dates (none that I've found anyway) so i have no way to know if she acquired these books as first edition or much later. I dont truly know if the marginal notes are all hers or some other person. One may only speculate! She's a total mystery. Either she or someone must have been a very well read young lady or gent! They checked off each chapter in the table of contents. How many kids today can lay claim to such a victory? I think it's time for us to turn off those phones and tablets and hand our children actual books and have them read out loud every evening after dinner..... it will only improve them.

Thanks for running these two items together. I saw them first in the early 1950's (in black and white) and again black and white 10 years later, since we didn't have a color set. I've often thought that this biography of Irving belonged with this rendition of SLEEPY HOLLOW. The Disney animation is still remarkable,, and Washington Irving remains one of America's most likeable and congenial literary companions. He was certainly the master of the weird tale and the ghostly story. His other writings are a treat, too.

I didn't know Washington Irving used to write one of his adventurous stories known as The Sketch Book but, I might be intrigued about it. I remember watching the Legend of Sleepy Hollow cartoon part of the Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad movie back in the days when I was a child.

I saw somewhere that he was inspired by an Irish spook that goes wandering without head in the Emerald Isle (don't remember the name of the spook).

Just noticed that he pronounced "Washington" as "Warshington."

Growing up I had no father but every Sunday evening Walt would be on my TV screen introducing a show or talking about his dreams for Disney world .........for one hour every Sunday I would have the best of father figures. ❤️☮️🙏

Me Too! Sure loved Uncle Walt . . . I did a high school paper on him. Wish I had all the books then that I have now. A favorite is ‘How to be like Walt Disney’ Best I’ve ever read!!!

I remember watching this. When I first saw it, I thought the first half was the life-story of the man who became the Headless Horseman. 😅

Thank you for making this content available. This is probably the best possible counter to the malicious campaign of destruction that the woke have waged for years against Walt's amazing creative legacy. Well done. ❤😃👍

I wish this was included in the Ichabod & Mr. Toad DVD, similar to how "The Great Cat Family" segment was included in the Aristocats DVD. Hell, it would be nice to see it remastered as a special feature for Disney+.

I’m impressed by how much original animation the studio produced exculsively for the use on the series, at least that was the case while Walt was alive and hosting it.
