Walt Disney World Monorail Sliver. Too Fast? 

How long did it take to actually become a monorail pilot out of curiosity? How many other positions did you have to go through to work your way up to that position and where did you start when you were first hired? :)

Do you need school or anything I’m curious on how long it takes before you become one as well

@@VegasFlyboy Currently, you can just apply for monorails right out the gate. Then, after about 3 months or so of platform only, you start drive training, which takes about 2 weeks.

Necro'ing the thread, but he was told to do a cab operator reset - much quicker than the usual key off/key on. I remember driving on train control bypass was a *pain*, since the springs in the switches were ridiculously strong and if you had to do it for any distance (always fun getting a TC right after you left Epcot or Concourse), your hand would be partially numb by the time you reached the station. :-D TC bypass limited the speed to 15 mph. 10 mph was the limit Central would set for door bypass and you had to cycle between P1 and neutral to keep it there. At least that's how it worked when I was there. I left shortly after Yellow had been outfitted with the new touch-screen consoles and RFID keys as seen in the video, and they hadn't yet completed the second train by then. It was also comical to watch if one of the trains got a train control due to stuck contactors. Shop would have you pull out a bit, open up the skirts and beat on the contactors with a wooden mallet until they got unstuck.

adding to the monorail was priced at around a million dollars per mile added. Skyliner was much cheaper

Had EPCOT Center not gone so over budget, they would have extended the monorail to what is now Disney Springs...I'm sure they'll never follow through on that now lol.

Approximately 1 month before

You would be if someone did their job correctly and prevented the accident from happening which was just a few weeks after this upland date. The guy at the control tower left and went to a restaurant and communicated from there instead, when he told monorail pink to reverse and didn’t see that the switch wasn’t made. This wouldn’t have happen if he stayed at the control tower.

There was an accident where two of the monorails crashed into each other, and one of the pilots was killed. They don't allow passengers in the cockpit anymore for liability reasons.

Steve Mellin Actually Disney has a electronica speed regulator on their monorails that caps out at 40 mph. Also when the monorail glitch out the pilot had to do a safety override and when he did that the monorail capped out at 10 mph until he got to the concourse in which he had to do a full reboot of the monorail.

Steve Mellin Also What these damn monorails really needed is to be updated. The ones that are currently in service have been in service since some in 1989 the rest went into service in 1990. That’s over 30 years ago. They’re always having problems with them and if they’re not having technical problems there’s little pieces falling off. Time for new monorails!!! I know Disney can afford it.

At land you can still sit in the front

Q was my favorite memories at Disney back in the early 90s...ridin up front, gettin a sticker, the little wings, and a pamphlet. Always felt important up there. Unfortunately, terrorism has put that to a hault.

@@vincentmusic09 You can clearly hear the audible alarm, followed by the train stopping. Silver had a train control malfunction of one of its PCU (propulsion control unit) groups. Central then called Yellow which was behind Silver and advised Yellow a holdpoint so that it did not get too close to Silver. Then Central ensured that the area ahead of Silver was clear because the MAPO system was no longer active. Silver was then called to do a train control bypass. This requires the pilot to hold 2 levers behind him and to the left all the way into the station 10 MPH limit.

It’s not allowed anymore due to an accident that happened several years ago.

They did up until July 5th when there was a fatal crash due to communication error with the control tower. There is a video explaining all this on what happen. Basically monorail pink and purple collided.
