In Hollywood's Golden Age, behind the glittering façade of fame and accolades, lurked shadows few dared to explore. Walter Brennan, a three-time Academy Award winner, epitomized the quintessential American character on screen.
As a 77-year old Black man I do not see how the narrative that was presented proved Walter Brennan as a "hateful man" ! He was a product of the prevailing times ! No better no worse !!!. Still enjoyed his acting !!! No regrets !!.
Exactly my view, Mr Jones. No actual recorded or filmed evidence is produced that Brennan celebrated Martin Luther King's death, or that he behaved in a racist manner or that he was guilty of any criminal conduct. All this is "reportedly", alledgedly, all hearsay for the purpose of tarnishing the reputation of a dead man unable to defend himself. I find this very low and cowardly behavior by the producers of this smear.
I'm a little younger than you are, as a kid growing up in the 60s I loved seeing him on our 19" B&W TV, I didn't see the evil in this video except being a conservative in Hollywood could be perceived that way.
Brennan was a fine actor. He was also a bigot who frequently uttered racial remarks. In 1968 he endorsed George Wallace. Brennan believed that the Watts riots could have been stopped "with a machine gun." He expressed with glee and satisfaction the assassination of MLK. His professional life was nothing like his personal life. You, sir, are an OREO.
Brennan was a very fine actor. Unfortunately, Brennan was also a bona fide racist who frequently uttered racist remarks. In 1968 he endorsed George Wallace. Brennan thought the Watts riots could have been stopped "with a machine gun." He expressed joy and satisfaction at the assassination of MLK. He was a narrow-minded bigot when not acting.
The 10th Amendment of the Constitution said that any power not expressly given to the Federal Government was reserved to the States. Segregation was one of the things reserved to the States, since it wasn't a power given to the Federal Government.
And as Americans, we are all entitled to think of his beliefs as evil. Racist beliefs are evil. Hypocritical too, because he didn't believe that communists were entitled to their beliefs.
Thank you josieramimondi ! This video is repulsive! 'Click bait' stating he was The Most Evil Man... is disgusting and 'evidence' is simply the PREJUDICES of the narration ! I LIVED through this world and survived ! NO ONE knows what it was like except those of US WHO DID ! I have a double university set of degrees and am qualified to critique the critics! TODAY the pendulum has swung to the FAR LEFT -- who are more paranoid and ignorant of making choices than my parents & grandparents. AMERICA *IS* COMMUNIST today. It exercises REVERSE DISCRIMINATION as much as the John Birch Society & McCarthyism did in post War with its own 'fears'. This is no argument, but at least it is more than the simpleton's response of lawsonj or any of the 'commies' running our already cancelled & destroyed culture. I may only be Canadian but our common dignified and grossly underestimated TOLERANCE of others is a thing of the past thanks to the bulldozers of the Krazy Left !
And a member of the John Birch Society too, Damn! Brennan probably ate children in his basement. Isn't that what conservatives do? I'm glad this video brought the evils of conservatism to light.
@@MichaelJDargan They were both products of their time. I don't see Wayne as a particularly bad person either. Some of the things he said that are considered racist today are actually still true. People just deny it it now.
If he was the son of Irish immigrants born in the 1890's it would be almost certain that he would be anti-communist if being communist, which it does, denies the existence of religion or God or the primacy of family over state as the basis of society. Very few Irish were communist but many were left leaning in the sense of having sympathy for the poorer sections of society.
Given his lifetime, he saw the rise of communism, the creation of the Soviet Union, the Red Famine, Stalin’s Great Terror and purges, and ultimately the deaths of over one-hundred million people due to communism. Sounds to me like he was a very sensible guy. RIP to a great guy and talented actor.
Although a terrific character actor, he was known to hold racists views towards blacks. And its known that he celebrated with a small dance when he found out that MLK was assassinated. The man was anti-civil rights. For someone who calls himself a “god-fearing christian, what the hell ever happened to love thy neighbor. Anyone who calls themselves christian patriots and are members of the john birch society are no better than nazis!
You never said what made him evil,. So i guess its your opinion? That's why these types of site are not believable. If you want to do a biography then leave your opinions out of it.
You called this man evil. You have presented no basis for this assertion. He fought in a world war. It is not unusual for him to be anti-communist, explains affiliation with John Birch Society. You presented no evidence of him being racist. Not one quote. I try to be careful in making assertions of someone who died. They can't defend themselves. This was unwarranted and cowardly.
I'm not gonna start , but, keep looking. He and John Wayne were 2 of the worst humans in Hollywood. The world is better BECAUSE they are gone. About now, they are reaping what they sowed.
It is hilarious that the narrator of this "expose" got blasted in these comments. People are sick of "woke" Hollywood and its vilifying of great and wonderful people. Good job everyone!
America is less pretty the more you know about it. One has to weigh if his acting mattered more than his racism. One may link the murder of MLK to extreme right wing people like the John Birch Society that thought Dwight Eisenhower was a commie. Mainly, capitalism is all about paying workers NOTHING AT ALL.

McCarthy and his lover Roy Cohn were evil and ruined careers for the fun of it. Some committed suicide after lies told be right wing nut cases. There was nothing honorable about those who were in the John Birch Society.
@charles-cl6xj. Let me explain to you that the reason ppl believe he was evil was because 1) he was a racist, and 2) he was a member of the John Birch Society, and although they professed to be anti-communist, they were notorious for spreading conspiracy theories. Furthermore, believers in Communism or who have Communist tendencies, such as supporting dictators, accuse others of being Communist - a tactic of Hitler in order to distract what they really are.
You're exaggerating. You're racist if you speak in racist terms or join a racist organization. I don't know if he spoke racist terms, but he did join a racist organization - the John Birch Society.
@@fadedrose9- Maybe you should actually read what the John Birch Society was instead of parroting rhetoric you have heard somewhere. Wikipedia would be a start. "The JBS opposed the 1960s civil rights movement and claimed the movement had Communists in important positions." If they were racists, why would they partner with blacks? "Some prominent black conservatives such as George Schuyler and Manning Johnson joined forces with the JBS during this period and echoed the Society's rhetoric about the civil-rights movement and the Civil Rights Act of 1964." Wait? Isn't JBS supposed to be racist? Then why would racist groups oppose them? "Antisemitic, racist, anti-Mormon, anti-Masonic groups criticized the organization's acceptance of Jews, non-whites, Masons, and Mormons as members." --- Since they were so opposed to communism, and many people viewed the civil rights movement as communist attempt to divide and weaken America, then their actions were based on communist threats and not the racism people TODAY think they see. And no, I am not now, and never have been, a member of the John Birch Society, the Communist party, or any other group that seeks to undermine or overthrow the United States government.
John Birch's parents dedicated their lives to the people of India. John gave his very life for the Chinese. I think you might just be the racist.@@fadedrose9
He had evil beliefs, though. It's evil to believe that State governments should be allowed to discriminate based on race and suppress individual liberty.
My own parents flirted with the ideas of the John Birch Society, but they ultimately concluded that it was evil. That's not to say your father was evil personally, but it's unfortunate he associated himself with that racist, fascist group.
He isn't evil to have independent ideals or live a different belief than you. This is America. You forgot? He is able to be who he is as an American. He should be respected for not caving in to popular society changes when he actually didn't feel that way. Though many will judge him now for being different, he's an icon of cinema and a part of my life from a very early age. I don't care if he was different than the majority of Hollywood standards. A great actor but no phony.
Whether he's "phony" or not has nothing to do with anything, nor would we even know that unless we knew him personally. He was an authentic actor, but in his personal life, he was a racist; neither of which have anything to do with being phony. He would PRETEND to not be a racist if he were actually phony.
In this country unfortunately we have selective outrage and selective tolerance. Thus the reason we cannot come together on most issues. Thus the impasse.
This narrative demonstrates how the medium is the massage. Walter Brennan is a stalwart figure that demonstrates a passion for Freedom. DEI and WEF are sinful.
Agreed that Brennan wasn't evil. Obviously, the poster of this video wanted to attract more viewers by overstating things. But DEI & WEF sinful? Not terribly Christian of you, Allan. I think Jesus would strongly disagree.
@@soulscanner66 And so now let’s do Will Geer and Dalton Trumbo. See what sort of spin you want to give them. And just one other thought here; Brennan was old enough to see the end of Tsarist Russia, the rise of the Bolsheviks and the Russian Civil War. Judge the man by his times and experiences. He probably knew a lot more about the evils of communism than the current reviewers trying to pass judgment.
The Real Man a Hero and American Actor he is like so many other Gentlemen of this era- TV or Movies from the mid 50s - to the late 70s more Great pictures were created and being born in 1950 watched them all- God Bless America
Just because he was a talented actor does not forgive his divisive, racist and hate filled opinions. I wonder how he felt about working with Bogie and Bacall in 'To Have and Have Not'? It is sad that people can be so small minded. In death he is a joke.@@adambaum9732
It took courage to express his views especially working in far left Hollywood. If you are a conservative they bring up "controversial views" if you are far to the left you are A-Okay.
@@Ease54Anticommunism has been the prevailing view throughout American history, inside and outside of Hollywood, because communism challenges the interests of the rich.
I have worked in law enforcement for over 30 years and for many years I was a Personal Protection Agent for many celebrities both young and old and I must say most of the younger ones were entitled and had a attitude. My favorite celebrity I protected was one of the surviving Beatles and the worst was a younger female star on the TV show Punky Brewster.
Who came up with this title?? Walter Brennan was not an old evil man.Yes he was from a generation that wasn't afraid to speak their mind. He was one of the best actors to ever be in Hollywood
He saw what was coming makes me like him even more always thought he was a great actor and man this only reenforces it may God rest his soul. A good and talented man much respect ❤
@ronaldhall2489 If the only part of him that concerns you is whether you believe he was a good actor, then so be it. If you actually cared about the character & integrity of the man, that would matter.
He had a right to feel any way he wanted to. He was a great man and actor still love ❤️ to watch his movies and shows. People still think about the same things today just like he did back then. 🙏🏻♥️😎R. I. P. Walter I still love ❤️ watching you. I’m sure with our Lord Jesus 🙏🏻🙌💯
You're probably right. I found it repetitive and monotonous. I really didn't want to watch it to the very end but I wanted to here any evidence of how 'evil' he was. I didn't hear any.
FAR from BEING EVIL ! Walter Brennan was a Courageous Patriot .. He passionately exercised his Constitutional Rights .. also his Mandate as a Responsible Citizen .. Expressing deep, heartfelt concerns, + legal political beliefs .. Unlike the stay-safe silent majority, he stood up & was counted. We need more Brave patriots like Walter Brennan !
I get that you are trying to paint Walter Brennan as an evil man for being a conservative, because he didn't like communism, but how does that make him a racist? You gave no examples. This was a very odd, and dividing watch. Who are you to judge?
Good thing old Walt isn't around today. It's worse than he imagined. Anyone that lived during the cold war years knows that private bomb shelters were common. Grade schools practiced atomic bomb drills. Wherever you are 'Duck & Cover' was the slogan. There were 16mm movies and film strips, posters on school walls. Our 5th & 6th grade classes were taught Russian. Just in case. I was in the 6th grade when Kennedy was shot. Aldous Huxlev, George Orwell, Ayn Rand were from Brennan's time, they all warned of things to come. And here they are.
Do you know the story of John Birch? Robert W. Welch, Jr. named the group after U.S. Army Capt. John M. Birch, an intelligence officer killed by Chinese communist soldiers in August 1945. He was the first casualty of communism in China. His death was a symbol of what was to come. The John Birch Society was right. As you stated, it is worse than I could have imagined only a few years ago. Don't think for a moment that CCP money isn't behind much of our society's quick moral collapse.
I had no idea that Walter Brennan and I had so much in common politically! Good for him to speak up back then. The decay in America is much worse today.
This brings to mind a quote by Ben Franklin "A nation of well informed men who have been taught to know and prize the rights which god has given them cannot be enslaved .it is in the region of Ignorance that tyranny begins "
This appears very one-sided where his greatest evil was being a convservative.. I heard alot of about his "supposed" paranoia about a a tyrannical politiocal view--communsism. I did not hear any proof of his anti civil rights positions, only opinions by one person's perspective.
@@brianbrowley1249 Come on, don't be so pessimistic. A well prepared prepper will always be prepared, so it must stand to reason one of them will survive. With all that preparation?
God bless Walter. The USA needs hundreds more great actors that love this country - and are willing to risk their careers by standing up and speaking out against those that want to see our great country decline and fall.
One may question loving this country when some of them were pro-Hitler during that period. Exactly what did the love about America. I am ashamed of it for killing off some from my generation in the Vietnam War that did nothing for the world. That entire war was based on lies we were fed by our military and I am sure that Birch nuts hated the Vietnam People that America poisoned for many decades. I am 84 and hate the John Birch Society that taints America today.
Those that were pro-Hitler were witnessing the murder of tens of million of innocents in the Soviet Union. That mass murder was supported by the left in America.@@gelfin7593
Actors are actors are actors!! When actors invade politics, they are stepping outside their reason for being! John Wayne and Walter Brennan are two people who are entertainers (period)! They needed to know who they actually are! Who cares what their politics are???
@leonistf. You couldn't be be more WRONG! First of all, acting is their PROFESSION. We ALL have a profession. 2) They are AMERICAN CITIZEN'S, and as such, they have the very same rights as ALL other Americans. As actors, they are fortunate enough to have a platform & like ANYONE with a platform, they are perfectly within their rights to USE it to express their opinions. In fact, I appreciate all the more, any actor who dares risk taking a stand. Why you would think otherwise has to be because you are under the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Lastly, I care what their politics are, if I like & respect them!!
@@leoinsf Actors' OPINIONS, not "attitudes" are just as important as Joe Blow on the street, but since they are more well known, it is to their advantage to tell their fans how they feel about a political figure, and they are risking a lot by doing so. If Taylor Swift says "Go and vote," this would be important to her fans. If you aren't a fan of TS, then it wouldn't be important TO YOU. You need to talk more in terms of how YOU feel about a subject - not about how the public as a whole fees - because you do not know that.
And yet, here we are in a growing socialist/Marxist environment & the US is self-destructing. He wasn't evil. I don't recall him making a stand on civil rights, but that he was a great actor. You might say that given the current progressive political climate, what he warned us about is actually happening.
Interesting observations. It is claimed to be anti-communist. Yet, in 1943 he was part of a movie about Ukraine farmers facing the occupation of NAZI soldiers in "The North Star". Maybe his role in this movie shaped his anti-commie views. The eastern war between Germany and USSR was truly a case of choosing the least of two evils.
And I’m not the slightest bit convinced that FDR made the right choice. Truman’s first remark about helping the Soviets when Hitler launched Barbarossa was spot on.
For anyone who has a knee-jerk reaction to the subject matter and feels they cannot make it through to the end of this before posting angry comments in response to what they have partially seen, I can only say, listen to the last two minutes of this video starting at 20:15 and you will see what the entire point of this presentation was --- you can clearly see that the presenter, far from hating on Walter Brennan, was simply stating the complex, dual nature of past figures and the times they lived in --- you will see that the presenter is well aware that he is navigating deep waters and is careful to not lynch anyone --- it is a well presented and thought provoking video that underscores the complexity not only of human beings in general but of how their opinions and attitudes are affected by the times they lived in. The one thing I DO NOT like is how the title of the video states emphatically that Brennan was the MOST evil man in Hollywood when in fact he was far from it. That title likely belongs one of the many infamous Producers or Studio Executives somewhere between 1930 and 2010. Saying that Brennan was the most evil man in Hollywood is like saying the presenter of this video was the greatest filmmaker of all time. Obviously not the case.
Walter was a great actor and wonderful personality. He wasn't a communist makes him even greater in my book., especially seeing through the nuanced , complexity of the lens of historical complexity and the rich tapestry and achievements , bearing witness to his societal evolution and political ideology shaped by diverse intersection of a celebrated journey...lol
John birch was not racist, it was strict consitutionalist and anti communist! You could not present one evil act or racist word he ever said or did! Just because he wasn’t a left wing liberal that makes him evil. He definitely was a patriot and great man!
Never got around to saying what was evil about him, except for the six words "opposed to the Civil Rights movement." So six words were stretched into 22 minutes and thirty-six seconds? Lots of people back then opposed the Civil Rights movement and aspects thereof, including 1964 Presidential candidate Barry Goldwater -- but Goldwater actually worked to end racial segregation in Arizona and simply opposed the tactic of empowering the Federal government beyond its Constitutional restraints. Nothing evil about Barry Goldwater. But Walter Brennan? Maybe _his_ opposition to the Civil Rights movement _was_ motivated by evil beliefs ... but what were they?
This was a very unfair criticism of Brennan. "The most evil man in Hollywood"? Why? All he did was espouse a political belief that the writer disagreed with. He had every right to hold his own opinions. Now, if he was encouraging illegal acts, that could be evil. As it turns out, I can see nothing wrong here.
According to YOU, he will be appreciated for his great acting alone, but that isn't the opinion of all acting fans. Many consider the whole person before judging them.
