WALTER GROPIUS “In my early youth, let's say around 1900, people were building in old styles everywhere, in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque. And the image changed only slowly, specifically with the help of new technical possibilities in steel and concrete. The German Werkbund strove to spread these new ideas. Personalities such as Peter Behrens, Adolf Loos, and Ludwig Hoffmann in Vienna started to show new buildings, which presented a fresh, new line. And I myself from the year 1910 on constructed some buildings which attracted attention and indicated a new line. When I returned from the war, around that time, it seemed necessary to me if I wanted to continue spreading my ideas, to found a school. And in 1919, right after the war, I had the opportunity to merge two institutes in Weimar the old Kunstgewerbeschule and the Wandel and the Academy of Arts and under the new name to establish the State Bauhaus. The idea of this school was a reunion of all artistic activity. From architecture to everyday objects, and a multitude of talents worked together more in a laboratory than in a school. Mutual influence of the masters on the students and vice versa. And this type of training has spread today throughout the world, specifically the method and the educational system.“
