8 years ago I was a 29 year old adult who never took a physics class in my life and happened to watch one of his lectures some random late night. I ended up watching the entire semester of lectures, and eventually watched every physics lecture I could find before going back to college as a freshman in physics. I ended up publishing three papers in atomic physics and leaving with a Masters in physics 3 years ago. Not sure if he'll ever see this post, but my life is very different today because of Walter Lewin
He won't see a comment on a reuploaded video of his lecture. But if you sent him a letter telling the exact same thing then I'm sure he would appreciate it greatly right now :)
Damn, you weren't lying.Sucks, guy was a great teacher and now many will only know him as a predator of his students. www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/01/23/complainant-unprecedented-walter-lewin-sexual-harassment-case-comes-forward
@@saminhaque13-52 Rechard Feynman was a world class physicst and had made many contributions in physics.. Go search about him to know more, he wasn't great just because of his knowledge and imagination but also for having a unique philosophy of things in life..
With no context, it just looks like an old man rocketing himself across a room using an old bicycle and fire extinguisher and then 2000 people start applauding him like they just saw real physics for the first time. But I know this video has a much deeper meaning...
@@josephdaniels3969 Well it is a fact he was caught by the university asking his young female students for compromising pictures of themselves. He was responsible for marking their courses. The university kicked him out. These are all facts. You can draw your own conclusions. No proof required of anything when facts are known.
@@jamesaddison81 wait are u serious.. Oh my god... He is such a good soul.. Is this for real? I've lost belief in humanity now.. Wow.. This has shocked me beyond so many levels...can u pls reply if this news is real?
@@jamesaddison81 yeah i just did.. MIT stripped him off his professor emeritus title after investigation.. Why did he have to do that!! I love physics and a therefore he is literally physics in human form and i couldn't believe there was an ounce of uglyness in him.. God.. This is horrible.. What he did is horrible..
+Mason Friday I Attended his late 2000 classes on introductory and AP physics as an off campus student (I was in high school and decided to take college courses early). He put mathematics and the sciences in a whole new light for countless students.
I don't care what kind of "bad" things Prof. Lewin has been accused of. He is absolutely brilliant. He has a gift of being able to teach that cannot be topped. If there were more that were even capable of being able to teach half as well as he imagine how amazing the educational system would be. He could give a lecture on the drying of paint and make it interesting and educational.
Yeah school would be fun again! Before I watched his lectures I was like... Nope I don't like phsics that much but now.. I'm soooooooo excited about it everytime we got it :D
The worst thing is, he got fired because of some really unimportant thing; I believe he was accused by a young girl that we had "sexually harassing" her online. Now, even if that is true, no one outside the US would even write him up for such bullsh*t reason.
My physics teacher: you have to learn or remember these things. They actually completely remove my interest in physics. I AM ACTUALLY STILL IN LOVE WITH PHYSICS BECAUSE OF YOU SIR. WE ALL NEED A TEACHER LIKE YOU IN OUR LIVES THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR YOU HAVE DONE A GREAT CONTRIBUTION IN MY LIFE . THANK YOU SOO MUCH AGAIN WALTER LEWIN SIR.
Aritra Gupta but even if they are as talented they won't be able to show that up since there are no institutes which provide them with the instruments for practical demonstrations.I doubt if even IIT does so..Our study system is basically marks and report oriented whereas research and practicals are barely taken into consideration..
In my school days, I had a physics teacher who was also a monk with Ramakrishna mission and he would make the class interesting with his practical lectures. Very fortunate me.
Education has always been a powerful tool with the help of teachers. But the education system nowadays is not good. It is hard to find the loopholes of the system with good teachers. But there is one in our education system currently
No, thank you professor for all those you have inspired, mentored, and taught, both at MIT and through the Internet. May YahWeh bless your life and fill the rest of it with great joy and understanding.
Such a very dedicated man for his profession.. He really loves teaching... wish that I'm one of his students.I'll never get bored and inspired everyday to attend his class. What a very realistic way of teaching.. Salute for you professor 😘😘😘😘
I came onto the Walter Lewin scene too late. At school our physics lessons were of the type 'Page 15 2nd Para is very important for the exams' with silly exams to boot and I came to hate it. I can honestly say if I were exposed to these lectures during my senior school, I would have given my very best to qualify for MIT so I could attend The Master's classes in person.
This was his last demonstration at the end of his last lecture before retiring - hence the applause from such a full hall. He is a great man, but made some grave errors which MIT investigated concerning online messages to female students. Whilst it was wrong, I believe no-one was 'damaged for life' by his actions, as some posters below seem to compare with others who caused such. Sad really, but he brought so much knowledge to so many.
The man rocks!!!! I wish I had him as a prof for physics. Even though I got an A+ in first year physics, my prof was very good. But he never did demos like this man!!!!
विद्वत्वंच नृपत्वंच नैव तुल्यं कदाचन । स्वदेशे पूज्यते राजा विद्वान् सर्वत्र पूज्यते ।। Meaning in Sanskrit: There can never be a comparison between a learned man (or wise man or scholar) and a king...a king is worshipped only in his own country, whereas a learned man or scholar is worshipped everywhere
+Furkan Baran If you refer to the full lecture, he indicates he wanted to leave his final lecture on his very own rocket ship and then brings out the tricycle. I believe it was meant to be symbolic.
fitforlife95 Walter Lewin was a wonderful Physics professor at MIT for many years (and you can find 3 courses worth of his lectures here on RU-vid). This clip is from his last lecture ever, filmed in the same room that he had done all of his other lectures in. He's very emotional because of this.
+Rathalos But this is not his last lecture for ever. He did several lectures after that and if I am not mistaken, even in that very room. I love prof Lewin, but I was disappointed about that decision I must admit. It became one of the "going on pension 7 times in a row with a tearful eye" things, just like some rock stars or movie stars tend to do. And sadly, the new lectures are not as good as the old ones were, many of them were just repetitions of the old ones, with no new insights. He did not do justice to himself with that decision. This is of course, my subjective opinion, I may be wrong. I wondered, however, what prompts a person to do something that will obviously not be as good as it used to be... so that was a bit of a disappointment for me.
+Omar Shahpo I think it came later, he sort of decided to go "on pension" way before that. He made this tearful farewell lecture and then "presto" he was back. Those sexual harrasment accusations when he was BACK again, after the farewell lecture. In that same so-called "last lecture", one can clearly see that his health isn't as good as it used to be, so the decision to go on pension may have been absolutely separate one from any abuse stuf.
