Hey guys. You don't need a part time kit to be able to run on back or front axles if you brake something. All you need to do is put free wheeling hubs on your constant 4wd. A lot cheaper and better than part time kit. The other thing is that because you have a part time kit this could be why you had issues with the 80 staying straight or poor handling without sway bars. I have had my 1993 80 for 22 years and have broken a few things and never been stuck as you say could happen with constant. 1. I wrecked the rear diff in the bush and just dropped out the rear drive shaft and towed the camper home on the front axle. 2. I wrecked the transfer case drag racing and other 80 on Mad Max straight near Silvertown NSW going from 1st into 2nd with 4 wheels smoking. Bang. I had to get to Adelaide for a replacement transfer case so again drove on the front axle and towed the 2,500kg caravan. It was fun in the wet when talking off at lights. 3. A few months ago i wrecked a cv in the bush. I disengaged the free wheeling hubs and again with the center diff locked, I drove back to camp. I then dropped out the front drive shaft and towed the caravan home again. With free wheeling hubs I KNOW what differences there are compared to part time / 2wd on the road. I testing both over many months with front axles in and out to compare. A 2wd 80 drives like shit compared to 4wd on the black top. The handling is miles apart. If you don't believe me then ask your self why street/track 4wd race cars are sooo much better. You may remember Bathurst when the 4wd Nissans where beating the v8s and the v8 drivers where complaining. This is even more so in the wet. Again when towing a caravan 4wd on the road is again much better and again more so in the wet. Mates have had the standard barn door 80s and complain when I wip their but in the twisties. I had a mate with a lowered 4.5 petrol 80 who loved dragging off Holdens and Fords because it handled way better than a 2wd car. As for wear and tear yes there most likely is but stuff all difference. I believe it is better to be towing on 2 axles with 2 diffs and 4 wheels than 1 axle one diff and only 2 wheels. Obviously the stress is spread around. Happy wheeling.
