Before there was the infamous PPK, there was the PP from Walther. Chambered in 32 acp, we discuss, shoot and take-down this sleek little pistol from the early 60’s
QUICK NOTE: one of my viewers caught a mistake I made, when I mentioned that Bond's Beretta 418 was also in 32 acp. CORRECT CALIBER for than gun was 25 acp

This Walther PP series to me, is the quintessential handgun. It's classic and ageless styling and near flawless operation is what endears this to me; and the worst thing is, I just missed the chance to be able to buy it's bigger siblings, the P38.

.Thanks for this vid - I just got my first PP in 7.65. - couple of things I've just found - the rounded Pin you called the firing pin - is actually a loaded chamber indicator - and the firing pin is more hidden - not protruding like this pin.

Bond's Beretta was a 1934 or 1935 in the film Dr. No, but was a .25 Beretta 418 in the novels. He gets the PPK because the Beretta got stuck in his clothes when it had a suppressor attached and he spend months in the hospital as a result in From Russia With Love.

Bond did use a .25 Beretta in the novels. In the movie (dr no) the prop used was a Beretta model 34/35 (32/380) which was incorrect. Also in Dr No, Bond was issued the Walther PPK but the prop used was a Walther PP. Walther PP in 7.65 holds 8 in the magazine. 7 in 380. Ppk will be one less round so 7 in 32 and only 6 in 380

Watching this over four years after you made it. Interesting thing that you said that it was made coming up on 2020 and covid lockdowns. In Michigan, we were not supposed to leave our houses unless picking up groceries or buying lottery tickets. We could not go to our cottage but our governor could go to hers (her cottage was a little further north). Hopefully lockdowns like that do not happen again. Nice video and very informative.

Thanks, very nice rendering and info on the PP :-) Just for info about the ULM/DO stamp: In Germany as well as in other countries in Europe, the city is used in conjuction with the main river flowing through or by. In this case ULM is situated on the Danube (Donau) river. Ulm on the Danube / Ulm an der Donau, hence ULM/DO.

FYI, the PP was also produced very briefly in .25 ACP. It wasn't as successful as the .32 and .380 versions. There's no record of how many were produced in .25, and most of the records were destroyed durin WW 2. They are very rare.. My PPK/S was imported by Interarms in the 70s. I say imported because both the slide and frame are German made, before Interarms set up to produce the frames in the US. It is one of the most accurate guns in my modest collection. Out of a Ransom Rest, sub 1" groups at 50'. PPs and PPKs are notorious for slide bite, mainly because we use a high and tight grip as the standard. They weren't designed with a high and tight grip. The solution is to lower your grip or install a spacer that fits under the beavertail that physically moves the web of your hand down. Once your hand's positioned right, slide bite goes away. I CC'd my PPK/S for nearly 25 years. It was retired to Range Baby Status simply because my eyes got old, to where I could no longer make out the sights in low light drills. I considered having the sights upgraded by a gunsmith, but decided I didn't want to risk damaging the gun's value. Enjoy your Iconic PP. It holds a special place in Gun History. A finely made weapon, produced by craftsmen, before CAD/CAM was a thing. Like the 1911, P 08, and P38, its classic lines are still visually appealing in this day of half plastic pistols.

In the books, Bond's Beretta was a 25 ACP. 😉 also, General officers will carry Colt model 1910s in 380, in a leather belt rig. Our regimental Commander, a two-star, carried one on Parade one day while I was in the service. I must say, I was in the artillery, though, and this was in 1980!

Just now ran across this video (today is 11/11/22) after it was posted nearly 2 years ago. I recently purchased a used Walther PP in .32acp caliber, serial # 68208 which dates this pistol as 1957/1958. Made in France, Manurhin, has hard black bakelite grips with Manurhin logo stamped at the top of the grips and Walther PP logo stamped at the bottom of the grips. So thanks for this video and the serial numbers/dates list. Import stamped Interarms, Alexandria, Va. And just learned from this video that Walther PP marked Manurhin pistols are worth a lot more coin.

The Walther PP was the first commercially succesful DA/SA Semi Auto to hit the market. Fleming had Bond using a Beretta 418, chambered in .25 ACP not .32 ACP. That was the main reason Fleming changed Bond's gun. Back when the Bond books were first introduced, Geoffrey Boothroyd was an immediate fam, but knowing more about firearms than Fleming, he was disatisfied with Bond's choice of the Beretta 418 in .25 ACP, calling to Fleming's attention in a letter, that it was a "Lady's Gun," not the gun a Spy would choose, being way underpowered for the work Bond did. Fleming was si intrigued he wrote back to Boothroyd, and a series of correspondence occurred, and the PPK was suggested. Although .32 ACP is not a popular American caliber, it was very popular in Europe, and many LE departments made .32 their service weapon for many years, up into the 70s. Fleming wrote the change into his character, and even introduced "Major" Boothroyd as part of "Q" Branch in the books. Fleming had the Beretta Jam un a crisis, rather than point out it was a weanie caliber that was unsuitable un the first place. .32 was chosen over .380 simply because .32 was more popular in Europe at the time, even though .380 would have been the better choice from the beginning.

I just picked up a 190xx s/n Manurhin a few weeks ago from a private seller on Gun Broker and it appears to be a first year 1952 production. I even got the Manurhin box with the correct s/n which is falling apart but still cool. I can tell its a early 50's production since it doesn't say "France" under the Manurhin on the left side slide which they added in 1956. Manurhin made the parts and shipped them to Walther in Germany for final assembly and proofing which by German law allowed it to say "Made In Germany". In fact, all Walther PP, PPK and PPK/S pistols made from 1952 - 1986 are made by Manurhin, France which seems to be a bit of a let down to some purest collectors however it well documented that the Manurhin produced pistols equal the pre-war German made ones in build quality and reliability. BTW, my 1952 Manurhin has the same polished ejector side which I believe is standard on all of them up to 1999 when Interarms - Ranger stopped making them.

Very interesting video. I have a beautifully finished PP in .22LR in a presentation case that was mfg around 1953. I had always assumed it was made in Germany because it was stamped "Made In West Germany" and there are no importer markings. I just learned the parts were made by Manurhin and assembled by Walther in West Germany. The receiver is made of aluminum which makes it somewhat rare I believe. Its fairly reliable with the extended magazine not so much with the standard magazine that came with the pistol.

A long time ago (1970s) I carried a CZ50 which is a Czechoslovakian copy of the Walther PP (without the moving trigger guard). I carried it for about 18 months and never fired it once. The first day I signed it out I was sitting on my bed playing with it, I had a round in the breach and I took it off safe, I got a big fright because I did not know what a "de-cocker" was so I thought I nearly had an accidental discharge. I got around the problem by never putting a round in the breach and leaving the safety alone.

This piece you own, is in great shape and you'll enjoy it for many good years to come. I am Portuguese, and the police had PPs and PPKs for decades. Now all have Glocks. Ours were in. 32acp. I can not tell you much about yours, but the word Ulm stamped on it, is the city where it was made. Do.,stands for Donau, a river close to the factory, I think. (As Mauser factory has the river Neckar, it is my believe that rivers used to move the machines and/or was a mean to move the products. I do not know for sure, so far). 1000 thanks for this video.

with mine it was a magazine issue and my grip being too high which meant slide bites (didn't hurt didn't notice until after shooting range trip), the meat of my hand was significant enough to cause issues with the slide's cycling so I try not to grip so damn high on mine. A force of habbit from shooting glocks where I try to ride up the grip as much as I can.

What is really odd about the person who "polished" the hood of that barrel is this: they wiped out the Ulm Antler and the last two digits of the year of production but nothing else. I will bet you they thought that the barrel was "mismatched" thinking the year code was the last two digits of another guns serial number. Sheesh...what a jerk to do that. All things being equal, won't hurt the gun any but damn...what a bit of research would have saved them. Regardless, a gorgeous pistol you have. I have one from the late 1950s and one from 1969. The one from the 1950s is a pure Manhurin marked PP is 7,65 Browning. It was also a police gun BUT mine does NOT have a lanyard. I wish it did!!! My 1969 is my carry gun (and a commercial Walther badged gun )so I am fine with that. Enjoy that Walther in good health, Sir!!!!
