I’m building this to match one that is more local to me, which mainly means the colors are different, but it’s really interesting to see the differences in HO scale vs N scale. Things like the concrete sections on the bottom of the outside. That’s just the same on N scale, and I ended up spraying it separately, masking off the top part. I’m still planning on making a loading dock, so the method of painting that is what I was hoping for, now that I think about it.
Great Job. I think you answered one of my problems. I purchased 2 row houses from Heartland Railway and the concrete foundation has very noticeable tab joints so the sand texture may be my answer instead of just using a turf/bush covering. Keep the videos coming
Would like to hear from anyone who used two kits to extend the length of the freight shed portion. And possibly reduced the size of the office potion by one or two sections.
Someday but not anytime soon. I still have a few more to build and then I will redo some sections of the layout to accommodate them. I think I will have more buildings than I could ever have room for. I might get a few on this winter.
At 4:08 in the video, you state that weathered concrete is really brown, not grey. Isn't that a function of the type of aggregate used in making the concrete? I know that aggregate color varies by location, and also perhaps by time period. My personal observations in upstate NY, where I live, is that weathered concrete is dark grey, as opposed to new concrete which is light grey (almost white). I model western PA in the 1940's, so I was wondering what part of the country your observation of brown aged concrete applies to.
Hey, thanks for the comments and that is a great question. I have put so much thought into the color of stone and concrete that I am thinking about making a video of it. I am in the mid west. What I see is that old concrete weathers to brown almost without exception. I bet if you look at old bridge piers in PA, they will be brown. However, newer concrete may have lots of additives in it to help it maintain its color or give it a specific color. Like if you see new retaining walls on a section of Interstate, I bet that concrete has additives to maintain the appearance (but I never researched it). Or look at concrete driveways in old vs. new construction homes. I think it might depend on the aggregate but that may be more about how much iron is in the aggregate and that will cause iron oxide stains. Making it even more complicated, the brown/grey color range can vary depending on light temperature (time of day, direct sunlight, cloudy, etc). I took a picture of a concrete retaining wall that was clearly brown to my eye and in the picture it was much more grey. Add in moss/lichen, and calcium deposits and you get even more color variation. So it is actually really complicated and if anyone wants to paint concrete grey, that certainly is not wrong. And I don't know how any of that is different in arid climates.
