Waltz in A minor "Leaning Waltz" 

The Waltz in A minor consists of three sections, and is the following form: ABABC. The first section features strong dissonances in the melody against the underlying chords, dissonant notes that "lean" against the chord until they finally resolve upward. It is somewhat reminiscent of “Desafinado” (“Out of Tune”) by the great Brazilian composer, Antonio Carlos Jobim, who built his piece on strong dissonances that delayed resolution, creating just the right amount of tension. The second section is a ballroom-type waltz that toggles between descending major and minor keys. The third section is a short coda, reminiscent of some of Schubert’s early waltzes, that ends with a change from C Major to C minor and then back to C Major. Overall, an unusual waltz but one that is practical as a dance.
