I wonder if Ojibwe, Chippewa, Cree, Anishinaabe Native Speakers could be brought into this project because those are also Algonquian languages ... just for pronunciation ideas if nothing else. THEN after that, maybe the Wampanoag could help the Eastern Virginia Eastern Algonquian people (Powhatan related tribes like Pamunkey etc) to also revive THAT Eastern Algonquian Language.

I admire these efforts so much--and wish everyone will have success in this reclamation. Hope to see more as things progress. :)

It's a good thing education concentrates on useful subjects now.

I'm hoping for a chance to eventually learn. While I am sad to say that I do not know my actual Native heritage (I did not have that luxury, growing up), I want to study different languages and cultures...perhaps even discover some of my ancestors. While I grew up obsessing over European cultures, I also want to learn about and possibly help the many Native American cultures in our country. It feels important, to be able to learn and connect.

Very interested in learning more about the Wampanoag language, culture, and history as I have a few 10th to 13th generation Wampanoag blood ancestors. The irony is, I also have blood ancestors that were on the Mayflower, but despite what the English and others did, the Wampanoag People are STILL HERE. May we all live in peace.

So wonderful. I lived in Mashpee a few decades ago. Mashpee Native Americans owned the cottage I rented and really looked out for me. Wish I could take lessons, but I certainly understand the need to keep it within your nation.

They didn't have a written language, so why not just spell it phonetically?

It's actually been refurbished from its earliest written forms in the 17th Century. Wampanoag today is much more phonetic than what it was during the beginning of the Colonial Era, during which many languages did not have a standardized spelling system.
