Agatha seemed to have gotten shafted as bad as the residents of Westview, she didn't seem to deserve what she got in the end. What was Agatha even doing in the hex? Was she living in Westview when Wanda created the hex? Was she Jimmy's witness protection case? And talking about people getting shafted, how was the director of SWORD even in the wrong? The Vision in the Hex was a fake, what Wanda was doing was actually wrong, he actually told Wanda they were decommissioning Vision when she showed up. The only thing he could be wrong about was activating Vision again against his orders, but the show already made him to be the villain before he ever did that.

First off it showed how talented both Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany are. It took such an unusual premise and made it work. I just binge watched WandaVision and loved it. It took me a few episodes to get that it was Wanda only doing everything, not someone else (like Agatha) controlling Wanda against her will. And the use of American sitcoms, particularly the 80s and 2000s sitcoms, was too fun. I will say that as I watched Wanda walk through the crowd of towns folk in her hoodie after they were all freed in the final episode, I felt so much anger and frustration on behalf of the people because there would be no justice for them, like jail time for Wanda, for being held against their will. After realizing what she’d done, I was at first thinking that her walk through town was her walking towards her punishment. Anyone else feel or think this way?

@testfire3000
@testfire3000 2 года назад
Wanda is one of my favorite Marvel characters. While I don't even know how to punish a character with Nexus level power, I do agree that the townsfolk deserved something more than her escape. She did something very wrong and never had to answer for it other than "I'm sorry' as she fled the scene of her crimes. I *get* that she was traumatized and in grief, ect, but that doesn't excuse crimes in the real world. Even in the trailers for (and now in the actual movie) Doctor Strange & the MoM, when she first sees Stephen she is not at all surprised as she assumes this is about Westview. If you think about it, had she been forced (somehow) to stay, give proper apologies, do community service, mandated psychological counseling (good chance to re-introduce Doc Sampson into the MCU) and face ANY sort of reasonable justice system, then the events of Dr. Strange II might never have happened.
@Byronic19134
@Byronic19134 Год назад
I think you missed the entire point of the trauma Wanda was born into and continued throughout her life with both her brother and finally Vision dying. I ask you has Wanda not been punished enough by the universe? Also, nobody is going to arrest the Scarlett Witch.

I think it was definitely more focused on the journey than the destination. It seems like it wouldn't make sense for Marvel to put too many crucial story points for the next phase into something that not all theater-going audiences would get to see before the next movies come out. But by putting in so many fake-out Easter eggs and sticking to the weekly format, they created tons of water-cooler hype around the show to garner more subscribers.

Wanda was using sitcoms based on what she watched when she was growing up for her grieving. While Wanda and Vision spend the early episodes trying to hide their abilities it was only a matter of time before they came realized to the town. I believe the beginning was Agatha testing Wanda’s powers.

There's a major bias here that's misinterpreting Wanda completely. Wanda clearly wants marriage and children. She was in a relationship with an artificial intelligence who is now dead. By the relationship's very nature (which is referenced in the nosy comments of being asked why they don't have children yet), they are biologically incompatible. He's not human. Do you understand why this desperation to follow the housewife emancipation narrative thus doesn't make sense? The show isn't making fun of housewives who want marriage, children and a normal life or telling them to give up wanting those things because academia has decided for women that a traditional family life with a nurturer and a provider is unfulfilling. It’s also not making fun of historical time periods and their mindsets in a postmodern way (not the same criticism that Pleasantville made), but actually is looking back on those sitcoms and their tropes with a lot of love. The show creators actually had a sit-down with Dick van Dyke because they have affection for these shows and it showed in how accurate they got everything. At no point do they make fun of the eras or sitcoms of old, but rather reserve most of their poking fun (lovingly) at the characters themselves instead. Elizabeth Olsen herself is a sibling of sitcom royalty (the Olsen twins of Full House fame). Wanda herself has a lot of affection for those escapist shows that got her through hard times and she yearns for having a lot of the things depicted in them. Criticism of past media for not being currently relevant enough (this idea that the ‘50s sitcom world or even music of the era is creepy all on its own even before it unravels--sorry, but a lot of people still respect I Love Lucy, et al.) or of women who might actually yearn to imagine themselves into such a “normal” or “traditional” life with things they’ve always desired (yet are explicitly denied to them) or one free of tragic endings (yet at the same time acknowledging that we do suffer loss we have to accept) was completely the opposite of WandaVision's message. Wanda has been denied every single one of those things for her entire life and she's in mourning for the life she thinks she'll now never have because everyone she's ever loved is now dead. She desperately wants to have children, a husband and family, to the point where she still hasn't given up on creating them for real. And do note that she has to create them magically, whether Vision comes back or not. Before she even lost either of these Visions or her imaginary children, she had already lost her own parents, home and twin brother. She's been a young woman without family for years and Vision was the one being she had left (she didn't have many Avengers she was close to and one she spent her entire life blaming for killing her parents), as unusual a couple as they were, until he was taken from her, too. Hayward pushes her buttons constantly by using language that dehumanizes Vision (phrases like "back online", rather than "back to life") as he's being stripped for parts while she's using language describing a loved one she wants to give a human burial to. She has been judged for her choice in partner, just as the act of White Vision being stripped of Vision's memories that were wrapped up in falling in love instead of strict programming without distraction (Vision injured War Machine in an act of friendly fire because he was distracted by Wanda) is deemed by Hayward to be an improvement. He sees Vision as nothing more than a very expensive weapon to be used. He even puts a price tag on him. The relationship between Wanda and Vision with Vision being capable of having feelings or sentience at all is thus treated as a programming mistake. The denial of Vision’s personhood also mirrors Wanda’s own for years. Hydra and Ultron used her as a weapon, then the Avengers used her as a weapon until they spent more time treating her as a live nuke that needed to be guarded and imprisoned. It’s not much different than Wanda being told that Vision doesn’t even belong to her and even his own desires are irrelevant (he thus doesn’t even own himself); he’s mere property of an organization. The last thing Vision wanted to be was a weapon and it shows in how he doesn't defeat White Vision with a battle, but rather an existential philosophical debate. Consider this when you realize that Vision was ready to flee the Avengers completely with Wanda to go live in a suburban lot in New Jersey when they were pulled into the mess with Thanos. Their attachment was to each other during those stolen moments for two years, rather than to some greater duty. It was Vision who bought that empty lot and was talking about the two of them running away from everything and pretending to be a normal couple. It's the life that Vision was talking about in Infinity War that was taken from Wanda because he was attacked right after that scene and later died in that movie. Interesting thing to note about Infinity War is that Vision was using a human form at the beginning of the film even when there was nobody around (even alone in their hotel room and even when the Mind Stone is bothering him--he doesn't change form when she's connecting with the stone in his forehead either). Throughout WandaVision, Wanda is constantly asking Vision to remain in his true form with her, such as when meeting his children for the first time. It actually contradicts the real Vision that we saw at the start of Infinity War who seemed to be wanting to be seen as a man instead, even in only Wanda's presence alone.

I've always liked Wanda. I had trouble accepting that she was capable of being so villainous and selfish after all this time. Granted it was unintentional but almost none of it was addressed in the end, and her character seems slightly more grey. It makes sense that there is still a dark and terrifying aspect of her power. But after being an Avenger for so long it's almost jarring. These people snapped out of it and were terrified of her. And her reflex was to accidentally strangle everyone. This was before she leveled up to become the Dark Phoenix. Oops I mean Scarlet Witch.

Hurt people hurt people. I find it insane that a character can be an orphan, have her brother murdered, then have the love of her life murdered in front of her, after she already murdered him to save the world...why do people not think that trauma will come out? I don't remember the government asking if she was okay after her twin died instead they put her on house arrest.

I think the 5 stages of grief have been moved around 1) anger - at losing Vision 2) depression - that she couldn’t see his body 3) anger - by going to Westview and trapping the entire town 4) bargaining- living her life through sitcoms 5) acceptance - realising that a fake family is not the solutions to her problems. Just a theory tho......

Interesting coming back to this after MoM. Contrary to the opinion of many, I believe the movie actually retroactively makes the show even better, in particular the season finale. And the way you've described the themes and the character arc thru the story of WandaVision really was leading to the events of MoM.

4:27 Your editing of that scene with Wanda and Vision juxtaposed with Thanos and Vision while keeping the laugh track intact was freaking brilliant. I very liked the show. For me, WandaVision is about loss and grief and how you deal with it. In the end, you have to go on, change and leave the past behind you. Elizabeth and Paul have awesome chemistry in front of the camera. And I don't want a standard superhero action series because we already have the movies, and WandaVision gave me a new perspective regarding the MCU. The end was a little bit weak but overall this was a very entertaining ride and I am very curious about the next instalments of the MCU, especially for Loki :)

The craftsmanship for this is superb, this is brilliant in so many ways, from the black and white to the cinema like color grading and aspect ratio, this reminds me of parallel themes and Tropes like The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask for the stages of grieving and Superman for the man who has everything, for the beautiful lie aspect and the pain it gives to give up that perfect world for Reality.

I just watched Age of Ultron again, Fury mentioned Nexus as the place where all data flows through. Does that have anything to do with the Nexus commercial in WandaVision? How comes no one talked about nexus when Age of Ultron came out?

Great video! One of the clips claimed that television lies to us. Romanticism isn't lies. It depicts the world as the artist thinks it SHOULD be, not as it is in the here and now. We're seeing the artists value judgments on display. Art is a way of bringing ideas on the conceptual level to the perceptual level. It's an amazing thing and gives us something to reach for. Art definitely does play a role in shifting culture towards new ideals, whether they be good or bad, as art comes from ideas, and it is ideas that ultimately shape a culture.
