My go-to video whenever I'm stuck designing a Pad or Drone. Sometimes I just want to pile more stuff to things when stuck, but that's not always necessary! This video is a great reminder of that.

Thanks for the detailed information, Chris. I stumbled on to your YT channel when looking for ambient music - I am wanting to create some ambient music tracks for my young daughter, who is suffering from mental health issues and seems to find peace with ambient music… your knowledge and willingness to share will hopefully allow me (and possibly have her create with me) to create music that will help find her peace and serenity at times of need. I am rather analytical based, so when the term “creative” is thrown around, I tend to cringe…I really do align with and ‘processes and rules’, so thank you for providing some type of semblance of that, even though I understand that creativity is required - otherwise all ambient music would sound exactly the same.

10:05 If you like that sound, maybe you should try Polyverse Comet, this is a reverb with the glide option applicable to parameters 🤓 Besides, this is a really good spacial reverb, I use it a lot.

Hi Chris, I've recently been getting into your videos and I must say you really have given us the most amazing set of resources with these! I know this is a big question, but I have Omnisphere but not Serum - but I'm assuming that many of the principle here can be applied there too? And I know you have a specific Omnisphere video as well so I'll be soon checking that out. Thanks again man!

Hmm do pads can be actually used as Drones? I've got into ambient because I like it but I like also drones.

Great tutorial Chris, thank you! Do you have any advice on how to design sounds when your higher frequency hearing isn't what it used to be? I'm 57 and my hearing is OK for my age, but obviously I'm not hearing all the "air" that someone aged 20 would be able to hear. What can I do to get my sounds to have the right spectral balance and my mixes to work well - is it inevitable that I will need someone with better ears to listen to everything as a kind of QA, or are there steps I can take to improve my chances of getting a good top end balance on my own? Sorry for the unusual question :)

You me and the late Dave Smith. His company had to recall the initial run of a new hardware synth a couple years ago to roll off the high end - because of poor Dave’s high end hearing loss. See a good audiologist and find out what hearing loss you actually have. Same as for glasses. Ask for a frequency response curve and use monitor EQ and accurate frequency response visualization to see and compensate for those reduced frequencies’ amplitude in our hearing. Use our ears yes, but also use our eyes as necessary.

@@actualkevin Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it. You're right, I think I do need to see someone, as my last hearing test was probably about 15 years ago (I had a minor dip around 4k, worse on the left, but otherwise it was normal for my age). I've also started getting a buildup of wax in my left ear, and it puts my stereo hearing out of action for up to a week every time while I try to clear it with drops, which can be pretty miserable. Luckily I don't make my income from music (yet), but it's still really frustrating not being able to hear in stereo, as you can imagine. Anyway, kind of feels good to be mentioned in the same sentence as the great Dave Smith :) And yes, I will get a checkup soon. Many thanks again.

I always have one problem. If i design my own wavetable with vital, it gets soo quiet. In fact so quiet that i have to turn the other oscilators to 0.20 or 0.10 db. Do you know how i can fix this?

Try increasing the level of the harmonics. The harmonics are the top bar graph in the wavetable editor above the phase. Check out the video on my channel titled "Pads for Vital" which shows you a similar method.
