Submariners eat the best food in the military... It's kind of a small morale boost & reward for barely ever seeing the sun or breathing fresh air.

I'm Army but I have to say that being stuck underwater for months, no daylight, no real communication with family, not knowing where the hell you are, and all the rest of what they go through, to me means that at the very least they should get some good grub. Comfort food. Just my opinion.

Never ate Army chow but, I had some really good chow in the Navy. How good your chow was depended on where you were and how good your mess crew was. If you think MRE's are bad, try some C Rats. MRE's are gourmet compared to C Rats. Sailors and Marines who had to eat C Rats carried two things, a John Wayne (P38) and a bottle of Tabasco sauce.

John K and how many battalions in the army and marines are deployed overseas actually doing something? probably not that many because there is nothing for us to do now. the navy’s whole purpose is in my opinion is to show our rapid readiness at any given time. i’m on subs but as far as surface fleet they travel around the waters and are off the coast of these countries so if anything were to happen we could send fighter planes and others immediately over there. now i’m on a SSBN submarine and we provide that safety cushion for the United states as a whole. if any country were to think about nuking us they’d think twice because they have no clue where we are and we have more than enough nuclear missiles to blow them all away. it is for that reason that countries like russia don’t just nuke us. they can’t account for something that they know is out there but don’t know where it is

No they are not. Most are active duty sailors, they follow same rank and pay system as other jobs in the Navy
@gregsummers7350
@gregsummers7350 5 лет назад
@@aiirraidzz125 It is not quite that simple, the Enlisted ranks E-1 to E-9 and then the are trade specialization vary within rank groups. IAW USN web site, a Sonar & Fire Control technicians are paid more than a cook of the same rank. // That said, all jobs on a submarine are of equal importance in the 'save the ship mode' and personal obligation to each other. // Regardless of the level of their salary, good cooks make for a happy boat: so common courtesy and appreciation of their efforts, regardless of your rank, towards the cooks empowers their efforts to excel. // In my service as the Duty Officer, one of my daily duties was to inspect the Mess & kitchen - Galley to ensure that meals were of a very high standard, food was not being wasted and that concerns of the cooks were placed directly before the Commanding officer.
@user-bx4fk5nb5t
@user-bx4fk5nb5t 5 лет назад
@@gregsummers7350 that's incorrect. You get paid the same as any other person at your rank with the sametime of service. There are a few exceptions like sea pay where a person on a ship for 3 consecutive years makes more sea pay than someone that's been on the ship for a week. But even that's different depending on your total sea time. I've been in 10 years with 5 years of sea time. I'm a E-7 FC an E-7 CS (cook) with 10 years of service and 5 years as sea makes the exact same amount as me. If he has more sea time he'll actually get paid more. The only time I would make more is if I fill a special needed billet (job). That said I agree that people over look a cook's importance. Nothing has more of an affect on moral than good or bad food. When you're up for 24+ hours trying to fix equipment with an 8 hour watch to go and you sit down for breakfast and it's powered eggs with fake milk it's the most depressing thing ever. But a good cook that makes you eggs to order and bacon improves your mood drastically.
@BlueFang714
@BlueFang714 5 лет назад
@@gregsummers7350 All submariners get paid an extra sub pay incentive that changes with time, combined with their sea pay, and their base pay which is based on paygrade of E1-E9. Some jobs get extra pay on top of that as well, but that's typically due to specific collateral duties or being nuclear trained. A sonar tech or an FT will not make more than a cook of the same rank for any kind of extra pay, they will however most likely have higher reenlistment bonuses. Enlisted with incentive pays are typically your nukes, your A-Nav, you COB, and your doc. Might be a few more in there, but as far as I know not many else. FT's and ST's would be too easy to replace to offer incentive pay like that.

The food IS quite good on Submarines. Better than probably the rest of the military due to confinement issues of being isolated from the world for weeks or month's at a time without seeing daylight. And, the crews are proportionally smaller than on surface ships. Crews range from 130-160 men and now some women compared to Aircraft Carriers that have a few thousand crew members.

While I have never served on a submarine, I did hace the opportunity to tour an active-duty sub that was in port in San Diego. I was in Boy Scouts about 14 years ago and the Navy let us camp at a little park with a beach at the Naval Sub Base, my dad was the Scoutmaster and was able to get us a tour of an attack sub with the approval of the base commander. One of the sailors walked us through what he could of the boat and one of the stops was the chow hall. He explained how they get movies when the hit theaters to watch on their little tv's and how the submariners usually have the best food. The hall was small, maybe 6 tables and sat at max 30 people, the food at the base's chow hall was great and I could imagine the food on the sub was just as good. They always say that the guys on subs get the best chow.

Everyone's job on the ship is important. Everyone plays a role in the killing of our enemies. Without the food the crew would be dead. Don't forget a hero of WWII was a black CS3 (cook) Doris Miller back then called a messman that manned anti aircraft guns during the attack on Peral Harbor and was awarded the Navy cross. I met a WWII survivor that served with him during chief season. You see Doris in movies all the time. Just because you cook or run the ships store doesn't mean you'll never do more as history has taught us.

Good food helps a lot by keeping up the morale in such isolated environment like a submarine. No daylight, no sky, no fresh air, no contact with the beloved ones for months. These circumstances makes the smallest delight - such as a good meal - very valuable.
