Oh my gosh thank you for talking about the "Don't rely on a reference photo all the time" thing people on RU-vid say sometimes. I never used to believe it but I've heard it so much recently, I've started to feel bad for needing one everytime I paint... like what the heck?? So thank you for calling out that bulls**t, I really needed to hear that from a legit artist again.

You are right on the nose on this one. Simply practicing what were bad at will only ingrains that bad abuility further. We must analyze why we keep making those same bad things in our art and seek out proper skilled instruction to help us improve ourselves

I'm just doing some crafts and painting because I enjoy it. My biggest wish is to be able to paint portraits, especially in oils. Portraits to me are the ultimate goal. I watch others on youtube paint. They work the face and work the face - I'm not quite getting what they are working on for so long, so till I really see and understand I guess, I won't try. I know I have to start somewhere but I think I'm scared to.
@Lachri
@Lachri 2 года назад
I love that you brought this up, it would actually make for a great video topic! Here is the short answer. You can watch all the videos you want and they will never make sense until you start trying it yourself. It's going to be horribly ugly at first, that's a normal part of the learning process (especially with portraits). But as you make a mistake and THEN watch a video of how someone else is tackling that problem, a lightbulb will go off in your head. If you only watch videos, that lightbulb stays off. You will only understand what and why an artist is doing something if you're also trying and making mistakes yourself. It would be like trying to understand how to drive a car by watching videos and not getting behind the wheel yourself :)

I thought of this recently too! Before I jump into my coloured media and paints, I thought I need to brush up on my drawing skills first and I just felt like charcoal was super fast, so I purchased a starter pack of general's charcoal pencils. Hi, I am a Acrylic painter, I needed this video, it gives me fresh perspective, thank you for this video, I am currently stagnant in my art work, I struggle with painting canvases with a undercoat or base colour, light and dark issues, priming my canvas, I don’t step back as often, I keep reapplying paint when I don’t need to, less opaque transparent issues, but it’s good to get these grievances out of my system, again thank you 🙏

Your advice on the subject holding the answers reminded me of a quote from Mistrals Daughter, when he's teaching Fauve to paint. I first read this when I was a teenager, and it still goes through my mind when I draw: "Regard! Regard, Fauve... use your eyes, my little one, you must learn to see... see that apple... it looks round, doesn't it? But if you look - if you truly look - you'll see that the top is higher on the left... it isn't round at all, is it? And why doesn't it roll like a ball, this apple? Because it's almost flat on the bottom - do you see that with your own eyes, little one? And that little scar on the skin of the apple... can you tell me where it starts and where it finishes? What color is the scar, Fauve? Is it almost white? Regard! Do you see how the red of the apple is touched by yellow? And do you see where the yellow becomes brighter, just at the side? Now - Tell me, can you see where, on your board, you have placed these colors, this red, this yellow? It's all there, Fauve, if you only use your eyes."

I like the advice you gave me. Thank you. I need to improve my skills. I want to learn how to paint landscapes. I have been drawing a little bit.(Graphite). I’m serious about art. I started drawing during the pandemic, and now I have to draw something every day.. I have some supplies.And I did get an airbrush. I liked the jungle scene video and took notes. I may try to paint that tonight.Or get started the background. i’m a little nervous because I’ve never used an airbrush before.I’m planning to take your class. One of my problems is I can’t decide on what type of art I want to do.Drawing is a must do.And so far with painting, I’ve only done a little bit of watercolors.(Also pastels?/ I have some pastels but I don’t really know how to use them.Thank you for your guidance on airbrushes.Any suggestions on an entry level airbrush?The one I have doesn’t have very much pressure.Thanks again and sorry for rambling on 😊

Nothing is for naught because with every project I finish, I learn what went well and what I'd do differently. I often hear your voice in my head, it's just not finished yet. 😆 I'm really glad you mentioned reference photos. Is someone who sews less legit if they use a pattern?
