This past summer I came across this station. Sad to see it's for sale, but man, I sure would love to run one! To bad I'm broke and their crummy realtor never called me back. I'd have loved to see the inside!
Let's not let AM stations fade away like SW stations are!!

I used to work at WMAL in Washington DC. Used to broadcast Redskins. Transmitter was a little black box, with a attenna on top. And to catch the crowd noise, just a Mike hanging down. AM radio nothing like it. Long live AM radio.

I used to work for major radio network. We owned 50 stations in 12 states. Many of the smaller sites that we were looking at were completely automated. They had a small transmitter building next to the tower, exactly like this, and they had a C-band satellite dish and they were receiving one of the gospel networks via satellite on C-BAND in the clear and they just patched that straight into the transmitter. I worked for three years on the overnight as the master control room engineer I still remember getting the automatic calls from a site when a problem occured. Having to send the tower engineer to the top of whatever mountain the site was. It was a hectic job for a single person I had a lot of work The schedule was critical and I was switching satellites and feeds all night long while trying to get all the shows set up for the next day. The best part was being alone. Unlike most jobs where you have to deal with people, this was a very lonely job. I liked not having to see anyone or talk to anyone. I had to sleep at the office many weekends. Coming in a 9pm Thursday and having to be there till 10am Tuesday. I brought a bag of clothes and toiletries and I worked, a lot.

My late friend Arnie established Ms. Beasley communications group. He worked all aspects of broadcasting starting out as a DJ/ presenter, sales and marketing, and engineering. As well as owning a couple of Television stations. His first DJ job he had in is contract that he would receive 20% of sales he generated from his radio program. Lost his 3 years ago last August.

Just had to come back to this video and take another look at this station property. In some rural communities a 60 to 70 mile radius would do the trick with a very wide variety of music, an overdose of PSA's, informing of ALL community events, sensible broadcasting schedule, light local news, and the sky's the limit. Every town needs a good old AM station...or 2, or 3 of them. That would be a blast and serve the community.

Asking price is $359,900.00, that's for the property. Gotta wonder how much you're gonna have to pay an attorney and the FCC to transfer the license. Website says that they play country & western, gospel, beach & shag along with a weekly swap shop program. A lot of small town AM stations are doing that, it gets folks listening. Along with local high school sports. What an opportunity.

Be sure to have a technical inspection of the tower. Most of them need a full replacement of guy wires every 35 to 40 years and many of them need outright replacement at about 80 years. For the frequency you gave, that's probably a 5/8 wave and, since there is only one tower, omnidirectional. And, LOOK AT THE BOOKS! Be sure the station is economically viable. Some AM stations stay alive, only because they added an FM translator.

I hear this radio station here in Bolivia NC... the price is good.. The cost of transferring the license is about 200$ there are some other fees too but all under a grand.. The land there is more value than the station,, I wonder if it includes the fm translator station too.. If it does then yes it would be a deal.. As for backup power... Depending on what transmitter it was using.. A generac generator would be all you need ,, depends... Biggest problem is revenue... How to make it profitable.. It can be done and a lot of stations fall out because the cant pay their bills.. If I purchased this I need to make it as profitable as i can get it.,.

You are correct- it is hard to get companies willing to advertise on radio in general but especially AM. It might be OK if you can get some of the touristy spots to advertise. The powerbill alone would be huge each month I would assume $5k-8k a month. That is a lot

@@FarpointFarms I was also wondering how many people are actually listening to this station and how big is the DBA area.. (How many people are in the coverage area of the station) This can give factors into how much ads would cost verse how many people are listening,,, this can calculate ad funding potential,, the biggest thing is what to broadcast that listeners will support.. what format? Is the current format equates funds that pay the bills?, classical, news talk? MOR? what genre sells? And what about staff? Would you do it remotely or live on site? Some tough questions.. Its a lot and I know it can be done.. but man what a challenge that can be so rewarding!

@SpecialEd101 I don't know what the market is like there. Our area was metro and the big cities were more expensive. But I would say 350k for that site is a great price. Look at the tower map and see who is in the area. Look to sell tower space We had lots of commercial users renting space on our towers. We rented the tower, the building, racks space, electric, phone, and Internet. We had Ham Radio clubs buy tower access And there are hobbyist who need locations for receiving signals. Scanner clubs buy space and they feed the scanner audio to the Internet Rail fans do the same thing Since all the feeds are now pay services, people have money for the hobbies If you have 5000 people who are willing to pay 10 dollars a month to hear the train communications and someone is willing to set up a feed, they will put in the equipment and pay you a monthly rental fee. The bandwidth is usually very low for these Some clubs would get their own Internet access at the tower. I would install a 700, an 800 a 900 and a VHF and a UHF antenna at the top and a preamp and run a single cable down to the hut. Then I would put ads on the website and the station and post on Radio Reference that you have receive only access at your site to rent to any groups. Local emergency services might want to rent tower space for a backup And cellular companies might rent a piece of land to install a tower Lots of potential income
