Organize TGTB science units quickly, w/ less bulk, everything ready to open & go! Hint: you need a few essential tools!! Every time I prep for homeschool, I bring new ideas with the intention of making it even better....even more efficient....making it even easier for this homeschool mama so that on the day that we do the lessons, I don't have to think!!! When you plan ahead, it just makes everything easier! And isn't "easier" what every homeschool mom wants?
I'm going to take you step by step as I prepare the Arthropods science unit from THE GOOD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. I have lots of ideas and tools that will help you organize your homeschool curriculum whether you use these science units or you use another curriculum. Science journal: binder, folder, discs?? Do you have any ideas?
@mhals5251
@mhals5251 3 года назад
You're so funny! Love it. I need to get a papercutter! 😂 I'm a laminating finatic. A papercutter will go along with my obsession nicely. In the past for the student binders, I just used a binder with a folder inside if it was needed and I just kept moving the old units to the back and the new unit in the front. The kids liked going back to look at what they did in the past too and all science was together that way. Now I want to go prep our units! 😁

@@mhals5251 😜😜😜I used to laminate everything also and it IS such a time saver!! Especially with laminating!!! So yes! Great idea on keeping the old things!! I love that idea! My state doesn’t require portfolios, but this year, I feel like I should keep one anyway, because you never know! And this is a great idea for keeping track of all the science progress until it’s filed away!

@@SimplyLivingIt oh no!! Well that’s good to know!! I had such high hopes for my discs. At least they were 90% off! 😉 I bet you’d have better luck if it was printed on thicker paper. But cardstock (like what planners have) would be pricey to for entire notebooks.

How I organize my kids' science journals: 3 ring binder with tab dividers. Each tab is for the different science unit we do. Then I simply 3-hole punch their finished worksheets and stick them in their binder. At the end of the year, I let them keep their favorite pages, staple them together, and file them away.

I’m so glad I stumbled in your channel! Love your videos! We are going into our second year of homeschool (3rd, 6th, and a pre-K). I overwhelmed myself last year over planning and trying to finish everything. It’s July and I’ve been guilting myself about TGTB marine biology unit we didn’t get thru. It’s ok to take a break! My kids learned so much this last year, I’m thankful Coronavirus pushed us to homeschooling.

Oh, I’m glad you stumbled here also!! I’m reading The Unhurried Homeschooler again and it is soooo good to be reminded that most of the guilt comes from what we THiNk we should be doing. But we aren’t ruining our children. They are natural learners and if we just create an environment of learning, and keep fanning that flame that already exists in them, they will learn by leaps and bounds when they are ready. It’s ok to enjoy our children. When their school years are done, it’s the relationships and the fond memories that will stick the most. 😉

Also, may be helpful for some to know, when you purchase THTB science you also get the digital version free. You can go into that and print the pages you need if you don't have a copier or don't want to go to a print shop. That's what I do.

I’ve never seen how the science journals organised in any other videos. We keep all the old science units. We have science binders wiv all my kids science work. We loved the journaling idea from TGTB and use the idea wiv other curriculum as well. My kids love TGTB Mini Books!!! I make my kids write out the vocabulary words so they learn them better!!! Nothing wrong wiv adding extra activities that go along with a unit

I was undecided on getting the paper cutter you have, and then there is one with like a nob and you slide it down to cut. Wondering if you had any experience with it? Or what’s better
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 3 года назад
I have a couple of the slide cutters from back in the scrapbooking days. If it’s like that, my only question would be how many pieces of paper can you cut at a time. Like I mentioned, (maybe I mentioned it in my supplies video bc this is my all time favorite supply) I use this cutter for so many things. We made homemade Christmas cards last year. And I pre-cut a bunch of scrapbook paper into squares and rectangles for my daughters to pick and choose their design. And so I was able to do several sheets at once. I’ve made things for my church fellowships where I needed to cut a lot of paper at once. It just comes in handy for the volume of paper it can handle at once and for the speed of intricate cuts. I hope that helps.

So, I don't ever really feel the need or desire to comment on youtube, so please know that my comments mean I really appreciate your videos! :) I have a rising 11th grader and rising 6th grader. We too came out of CC (but many years ago now) and still pursue a primarily classical education in our homeschool. I just really appreciate that you seem to have educational standards similar to my own, and I am finally going to take the dive into TGATB science units for my 6th grader. Your videos are super super helpful. We are going to do Chemistry and Ecosystems next year to correlate with what the kids will be studying together at co-op one day per week. Thanks!!!

Wow!!! I’m blushing!!! I am so blessed to have your comments! Thank you so much for that and for making me feel so special! I’m glad you can relate! I’ve never really thought of my “homeschool taste” as “standards.” 😊 but yeah! I want curriculum that is going to both teach my kids to think, but also engage them to enjoy learning bc ultimately, everybody WILL learn what they are Interested in. So we really are teaching them HOW to learn! And hopefully enjoy it also! 😊

TGATB science is fun bc they have so many different ways to learn! I hope you and your 6th grader enjoys it!! Chemistry is a good pick bc I heard it geared for the older grades. So an 11th grader!! Agh!! Are you pursing the college route??? Do you have any high school curriculums that are a must do?

Did you decide which way to go for the science journals yet?? I like the disc bound idea! I have a love/hate relationship with binders, love them because they’re easy, but hate them cause of their bulk. I LOVE coil binding and bind everything! But that doesn’t seem feasible for science journals during the year; you can’t add things. So I tend to wait til the end of the year for stuff like this, and then coil bind when I’m done to save saving space. But next year is our first year using TGTB science units (and they look amazing I think we are going to love them!) and I’m debating on what to do for science journals. I thought maybe a binder (can coil later), or could put tabs and use them for multiple units. Or I may prep a journal and precoil them, like a workbook for my kids, they have all available spaces needed already for each lesson (just not sure if I’ll end up wanting to add stuff or not sooooo 🤷‍♀️). Hence why discs seem enticing for me! Lol
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 3 года назад
I haven’t made the final determination. I used 3 ring binder for now. And I’m thinking I may stick with that bc it’s easy to have the extra sheets in my own binder and then just hand them to them during each lesson to put in their own binders. And then I’m thinking, if we keep portfolios….again….may be easy to just transfer to a portfolio binder. I’m still thinking through how I want to do it for next year. But when I figure it out, I will definitely share it!!

"Mama only has so much time." We haven't done any TGTB science units, but I think they look interesting. The set-up does look a little intimidating. Doable, but it's good to know that there's some set-up on the front end.
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 3 года назад
It’s really not intimidating once you dig into it. And from the Facebook group, I realized that every science unit is different in terms of supplies. Apparently, the energy unit requires a ton of supplies. While this unit, arthropods, requires little. So there’s that also. You should totally try the FREE marine biology unit. Most of those supplies are from around the house. 😉

Hi ! What size is the binder you used?
@OurHOMEschoolPlan
@OurHOMEschoolPlan 3 года назад
This binder is only 1”. I heard the Manmal unit is a larger unit so we’ll see if it all fits. But for Marine Biology and Arthropods, the 1” was fine and still had room.
